"I like to livestream for the social element. NOT HANDOUTS OR FLIRTING."
logic
Well, I guess I won't mention my gender if it offends people so much or brands me as an "attention whore" as Meown puts it, rather unkindly.
What kind of response would I have received if I just wrote "mature gamer" with no gender instead? I can't help wondering, if a male gamer posted with "mature male gamer", would he receive such criticism and scorn for posting his gender? It seems to be one-sided and rather presumptuous to assume that a woman gamer identifying her gender is doing it for purely sexual purposes. In fact, a lot of these comments just serve to reinforce my views about gender identity being problematic in the gaming community. Though, not always
Edit: And of course I want attention: That is why I posted to forums and have a stream going. But the kind of attention I want is very different from what some of you have indicated I want. I've already explained that in an earlier post, so not going to regurgitate the gemeinschaft and gesellschaft of gaming via streaming again.
not to be a douche or anything but what does you being female have to do with anything
Being female has to do with everything. Everyone just pretends it doesn't because they're afraid of being called sexist
This is a discussion I have had numerous times with other gamers. The cold, hard truth is that there is an overwhelming majority of men in hardcore gaming. Now, that is not to say that women don't game--clearly we do--duh. And a lot of us don't go online and stream b/c of the infantile comments we get like "go back to the kitchen" and "show your boobs" kind of stuff. Or when you see one do it it's such a clear money grab with paypal donation links and begging for gear, etc, that it's a bad representation of women in gaming.
And sometimes it's just better not to identify one's gender in gaming b/c you do get flamed for it or get "bad attention" as I call it. That is you get stuck playing with gamers who can't treat you like a person anymore. So yeah, it's a risky thing to admit.
You're damned if you do, damned if you don't, but I personally like to identify as female. I want other gamers to know that there are hardcore women gamers and we are not shy to be ourselves --and we are not asking for money/gold/gear/sugardaddies, etc... I like social play and interacting with others while I game. It's more fun for me, that's my personality.
It *is* special to be a woman gamer as we are a small minority of gamers, so I proudly and emphatically list it as part of my identity. Love it or hate it, it is what it is.
edit: Thank you for your honesty, Mormolyce. I think asking why gender-identification in gaming matters to someone is blatantly insincere.
Hello, I am a mature female gamer who has been playing video games since before kindergarten and PC games since not too long after that. I am currently playing my third Diablo installment on Inferno difficulty as a crit-specced DH.
I like to livestream for the social element. NOT HANDOUTS OR FLIRTING. This is not spam, I just didn't know how to find other like-minded players, so here I am. I promise to be more active in the forums than just this post, but I am pressed for time between work and my dog and my gaming habit.
