Nah, people keep attributing it to the beta contest. It was before then even. Just browse the D3 section at any given time. Look at older threads and newer threads in that section.
"Who is the first NPC you will talk to?"
"Will you go left or right when you first start the game? Discuss!"
"How many monsters will you kill in the first ten minutes of the game?"
"Do you think my mustache tickles women when I kiss them?"
Shit like that....
Ah yes, but! Back then moderators moderated such things! And now they simply don't have enough time distributing it among exploring the Beta and files, running the contests and just trying to hold on to the site so it doesn't lag off to oblivion. Not to mention most of the staff isn't on call as they aren't really paid for this. Sadly. :]
Heh, my biggest concern from the start was the absolutely horrible spam that would arise. Now I simply ignore all topics that are questions. I really can't believe some people.
"What was your favorite class in Diablo 2"
"How do you feel about the rune changes"
"How do you feel about the skill changes"
"How do you feel about the Beta contests"
Really? From a quality perspective on a scale to 100 10 days ago Diablofans was 98 and now it's 15.
Things to learn for the next contests!
What I wonder is where is the moderation? Pages and pages of non-essential, wrongly placed and some plain stupid posts that spam the sh*t out of all subforums. A month ago a new topic that had anything to do with, let's say "what dye colors are there?" would've been locked and sent to the already existing topics within minutes. But right now nothing is moderated. No posters are being shushed, no topics are locked or deleted. Is this Yahoo answers?!
I'm even applying to help. Even temporarily, until the contest is over. Really, it's that bad. Let me delete the 3 consecutive topics made by the same poster that doesn't know you only need to push the button once, instead of letting them remain there for a long time. Or lock a topic and send someone over to an existing one discussing his issue.
