If you do a simple google search you will come across countless threads inquiring as to what, EXACTLY, these modifiers mitigate. There are as many OPINIONS as there are questions. I have yet to see hard numbers and analysis done to unequivocally determine what damage sources are mitigated by each modifier.
The most important questions that need answers are as follows:
1. Does "melee attacks" apply to only monster swings done in melee range? This would be logical, but I do not think this is the case because there are various anecdotal reports of high amounts of melee damage reduction also having mitigating effects on AOE such as desecrate, molten, plague. What is the EXACT method of mitigation, then? Is it ANY damage done in MELEE RANGE? Or is it ANY damage done that is CLASSIFIED as melee? Very important distinction to be made here.
2. Does "Ranged Attacks" refer to only ranged objects hurled toward the character? Or does it apply to ranged spells that are cast? I.e. MORTAR, Plague, Desecrate, etc? As you can see this stat would be utterly useless if it only applied to ranged objects, whereas it would be amazing if it applied to all spells and abilities that are cast at range.
3. Does Damage From Elites also apply to their spell effects? I.e. would the mitigation effect from "Reduces Damage From Elites By x%" apply to, say, an arcane sentry? Would it also apply to desecrate, plague, molten, mortar, and frozen orbs?
OR would it ONLY APPLY to ATTACKS made by elites?
As you can see, these various effects could be VERY POWERFUL or VIRTUALLY USELESS.
THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED!
Hopefully there are some saints out there with more time on their hands than I!
Please no OPINIONS. ONLY HARD EVIDENCE!
Thank you and Cheers!

We were told constantly through development that all defensive stats would be beneficial vs. all types of damage for consistency sake. I believe this is a bug and should be heavily reported until a response is given.

As we all know, % damage debuffs such as Resolve, bad medicine, piercing shout, etc. affect all direct attacks from affected monsters. I'm fairly certain the answer is no, but I'm wondering if the aforementioned debuffs affect aoe effects cast by actively debuffed monsters as well? I.e. debuffing a plagued, molten, arcane enchanted champion pack with resolve (25% less damage dealt). Would this damage decrease carry over to the molten, plague, and arcane effects as well? Or is damage debuffing really only effective vs direct damage attacks?
This is an extremely important question because of its implications on how worthless or worthwhile damage debuffing is.
cheers!

Oh, my mistake. I didn't realize real life logic applied to a game with immortality, magic, and dragons. For fucks sake what an idiotic argument to make. Waste of my time to post here lol.
I suggest you test again Zac. I've sat in lasers for extended periods of time (~20 seconds) with MoE up as much as possible and haven't seen a single dodge.

after extensive testing the answer is undoubtedly no. damage debuffs do not effect the things most likely to kill you, making them overall much less useful than previously thought. The question is; was this intended, or a bug?

"Dodge works on basically everything. You can dodge melee hits, missiles, spells, aoe hits, passive damage from environment, and so on."
I have found the that dodge does not work on any AoE effect. i.e. molten, plague, desecration, arcane rings, etc, yet does work on just about everything else.

Possible bug?

which is why i specifically mentioned molten. the "stack dex and nothing else" argument doesn't hold water when every other class short of the demon hunter can stack main stats and accumulate survivability vs. every form of damage. The mere fact that dexterity provides ZERO survivability vs. some of the deadliest affixes in the game makes it's value very sub-par in hell (don't even want to consider inferno right now) when compared with other gearing options. This provides quite a conundrum because most of the monk and demon hunter's abilities and of course damage output are based around this stat.
Please never say "you can just move out of it." That is not the point at all. Of course you should move out of aoe. The point is that there will be times when it is not possible to "just move out of it" due to stuns/immobilizes/freezes/slows/whatever. THAT is where your defensive stats come in to play, and dodge is 100% useless in these scenarios, while intelligence, and to a relatively lesser extent strength, are very useful.

Obviously some aoe can be avoided. don't be a dumbass. the point is the main defensive stat for both demon hunters and monks is useless vs the most deadly affixes in the game. seems like a design flaw to me. the term "tank" is ignorant - molten doesn't give a shit if you're a tank or not. you must be in melee range and therefore must take unmitigated damage (by dodge). being a tank has absolutely no relevance to this issue.

After fairly extensive testing on molten, plague, desecration and some other forms of AoE as a level 51 Hardcore Monk, I'm certain that all champion AoE can not be dodged -OR- blocked (most likely all AoE, but I've only tested these specific types).
Not sure what to think, but I really don't like losing 10k HP from a molten enchanted monster that can't be avoided (molten follows under the feet of the monster). Doesn't seem to follow the trend in Diablo 3 with all stats being less complicated.
Thoughts?
