For a challenge on the NES go with Contra, Ghosts and Goblins or Battletoads. Those are all pretty tough. Most people needed to use a cheat for extra lives on Contra.
For an RPG on NES, the first Final Fantasy was actually reasonably tough, though the remakes would lead you to believe otherwise.
I can't think of any games that really gave me trouble on N64 and PS2 aside from maybe some fighting games at max difficulty. They just haven't been making that many hard games since NES. The Perfect Dark suggestion isn't bad though, it was a fun console FPS.
So lately, I've been pissed off on how the current games are so fucking easy. So I came and logged onto this site and thought "Hey, all these guys are 40 year old video game addict virgins, so I should I ask them for a hard game!"
And so here I am. I need to play the hardest game of all time and I need YOU to tell me what it is.
This is what I have:
Sega Saturn
Nintendo 64
PS2
XBox 360
Give me a game on those systems please!
Although this dude is banned... but yeah right, games too easy.. .pfff...
ALmost any game you put on the hardest difficulty is impossible to beat. Mass effect 2 on Inasnity for an example, is fucking impossible.
I'm surprised with all the NES games listed Ghosts and Goblins wasn't listed. That game is seriously just rediculous. If any of you have a NES still I CHALLENGE you to try and beat it. You will be able to eventually if you sit there for hours on end becuse you get unlimited continues. However, you can't save and come back later. Basically you are this little knight and Satan steals your girl. As you guessed you have to go save her. You are wearing armor and if you get hit once it's all gone. Oh ya and there is no armor to pick up unless you beat the level. Couple that with the fact that this was litterally the most unforgiving, cheapest game ever made you have something that will make you throw your remote and yell "F*&K THIS GAME" within 20 min haha. Anyone played it before or want to take me up on my challenge?

I know, right? Oh wait
But yeah, Ghosts and Goblins was pretty freaking hard. Even for people that don't want a big challenge I'd still suggest it just because of the general charm it had. It really was a fun game.
Oi, I spent years pushing that game out of my head because of all the rage it put me through. The only way I could beat Contra was with a co-op.

One of the funnest and hardest NES games of all time. There is no saving system, unless you get it on an emulator, but if you play it on NES i think you have 3 lives.
Oh, and Robin Hood for the NES is pretty dang tough too.
One modern game that really stands out for me is Metal Gear Solid 3. That was a tough game. It's weird how most hard games are in the past, while, most games today are meant to be beaten. Funny how the idea of games change.

I think it has something to do with the evolution of gameplay, the internet and the communities created through it. Players tend to have a greater satisfaction in knowing others can see you pwn than doing it all by yourself.
Another hard game to play is cs 1.6. If you tag along with the pros, you won't get a chance but its fun to challenge yourself.
I like CSS better, that's just my opinion though. The gameplay is just as fun but way better graphics. You get in the game with someone who knows what they're doing, you can get PWND.
NES: Contra 1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1, Friday the 13th (ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL), and one of the hardest games ever is Battletoads (TRY and beat this game).

I actually did beat that game once. The place where I kept dying was right before you get to face "Queeny". (can't remember if she's called the Dark Queen or whatnot, but I remember calling her Queeny alot, so...) As you're climbing the tower you have to make one of those impossible timed leaps. Almost needless to say, I probably wasted close to 1,000 lives before I finally nailed the jump, proceeded to the top and totally stuck my bodaciously green toad foot directly up her royal keester and saved my equally bodacious bud and his totally sweet date.
Can't remember the toad's names either, with the exception of Rash. I think one of the other two was named Zitz. Oh! The intro music was completely rad, man!

Ok, for the 64 Ocarina of Time. It's not all that hard in gameplay perse as it is with your puzzle skills and evaluating the temples. To make it hard though, dont use any kind of strategy guide for the temples. The water temple without a strategy guide is just plain rediculous.
Also, try to find all the heart pieces without a strategy guide. Basically try to complete every task the game offers without a strategy guide of any sort.
Goldeneye on the hardest difficulty is pretty tough too, esp. if you unlock the feature thing where you have control over how fast the AI reacts to you.
EDIT
O and also, for cpu, dl DOSbox and dl the game One Must Fall 2097, i redownloaded it again. it was a dos game, a fighting game. one of the BEST fighting games ever. imo it pwns street fighter, and is equal to Mortal Kombat II imo, but different gameplay. If you play the tournament side, once you upgrade your robot up pretty good, that game gets so freakin hard its crazy!
Majora's Mask is WAY harder to complete 100% without a strategy guide then OoT

Depends on the quests. I managed to collect every mask but 1 without a guide. But I do agree, it was easier to get the hearts than the masks imo :P. But the golden skulatas... wow some were hard to get.
