Still though, Mass Effect is science fiction, and so many people here seem more geared toward fantasy games.
As for me, I'm so excited to pick up my copy tomorrow. I'll be transferring my level 60 Vanguard into the game. I think it's so cool they let you do that. Though I wouldn't really be starting at level 60, I get a lot of perks for having my original character get so far.
I loved Mass Effect, completed the game twice, once with an adept and once with a soldier. Don't know if I still have the safe files, but even if I do, I'll probably still want to start the game fresh with a new character.
Well, you would still start the game basically from scratch except you get a couple extra perks. But it's not just for perks, but another thing that's cool is that there's almost no canon ending to Mass Effect 1. For example, if your character finished the first game without saving the council, then you go on to Mass Effect 2 with that being the case.
So basically, even plot decisions you made with your Mass Effect 1 character will carry on into the next game. I'm not sure however they are going to do it if you start from scratch. So I suppose there would be some default plot setting.
I got it last night, installed it, and played it a bit. I've got to say, I'm a little disappointed. I guess I should have payed attention to the gameplay videos and interviews with the devs and all, but this feels like not the same IP at all. The combat system is fine, they made it better and streamlined combat, but everything feels so...scripted now. The dialogue is bogged down and it feels even more like Good - Bad - Neutral dialogue picks. Not to mention the map/mission system; scripted? The first hour was basically just a OMG I REMEMBER THAT sequence of events/shots/talking, but understandable. In the end, ME2 (so far) isn't a horrible game. It's great and fun, but it's not really the ME IP game. That's hard to say with there only being one game before it, but I loved what ME did and some of the good shit in ME2 could have totally supported that. *COUGH COUGH IMMERSION COUGH*

I can't get myself away from this game!! I've put in about 8 hours in just 2 days, and I worked both of these days too!
Combat system is 1000% better. I love the mission system, where it separates everything into, well, missions. I honestly think that the dialogue is much improved, and more realistic responses for those of us who like to go towards one extreme or the other. I want to just keep playing, but I need sleep and have to get up in a few hours for a Levi's commercial. Dammit!!
Yeah, it's a totally different game. Definitely not Mass Effect. They just slapped that title on there. [/sarcasm]

That quote disregards the paragraph that preceded it though. I'm quite enjoying my experience, but it's not Mass Effect.
I'm also enjoying making innuendo to anyone I can.

You can't say something is Mass Effect unless the series has got more than two games following the same pattern and / or system.
Exactly. The story is very much Mass Effect, the conversations are very ME, the combat is very ME. They pretty much just got rid of all the bloatware in the game. On that note, the detail in ME2 is phenomenal!!

I'm not trolling at all. People like you making claims like that are just annoying.
It's not about you liking the game or not. It's about claiming "it's not Mass Effect". That statement is beyond stupid. I always love when opinionated "fans" think they can denounce something in that fashion because they're under the impression they have some sort of superior insight on the matter that nobody else does.
I'm pretty sure the Dev team has a greater idea of what Mass Effect is or isn't than yourself. You know, that whole CREATING the game thing gives them a lot more expertise in the field. It's exactly like people saying Diablo 3 "isn't Diablo". It's a claim that's beyond stupid and reeks of ignorance.
Bah, rant over.
As far as the game goes, the Sniper Rifle has become my favorite weapon in the game. In Mass Effect 1 it was easily my least favorite. But the Sniper + Adrenaline Rush is pure win. Also, the story is outstanding so far. I'm 17 hours in and haven't even gotten all my squad mates yet or even done ANY side quests besides the "loyalty" ones you do for your squad.
I played till like 6 a.m. last night and just rescued Jack from the prison and then landed on the Citadel for the first time. I want to write a thorough review of this game later, but right now I'm just too busy immersing myself in it and playing it.
Just got done with the Migrant Fleet part. Good part. This game is so addicting; I made myself stop for the night so that I'll have plenty to play tomorrow.
Just beat it an hour ago, got way too adicted, played like 20+ hours, still more to explore and 5 more classes
The game is fun as ass hell and I love the new combat system, but i miss the weapon/armor variety and the higher lvl cap. There were also some mino glitches, but other than that its better than ME 1 in every way
I do love the new skills, quite fun for most of em'
I know, I know, shame on me, I had an opinion. I didn't have a greater opinion of what it should or shouldn't have been, I just gave an opinion in a review that otherwise praised the game. /meshrugs. And yes, my opinion of the game is different than the 'tards on about D3, because, well, the game is out, and I've, well, played it.

I made my decision on a whim, it really was a ME2 was out first kind of thing.

Fuck.
I want this game.
But I also want Bioshock 2.
What do?
I'd wait for Bioshock 2. I honestly think ME1 was better.
ME2 is really fun, but the new weapon system... I miss the old one. You can't even buy weapons, you have to find them. You buy upgrades for the weapons and armor instead of buying the actual weapons and armor. Nothing else beyond that considering they eliminated any sort of inventory system.
The combat system was supposed to be incredible according to the devs. I don't see anything THAT good about it. I do like how they improved the accuracy of all the weapons, though.
I don't want to spoil anything about the story, but even that could have been better, in my opinion. There's a pretty interesting twist when you get farther into the game, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. The missions are somewhat repetitive, as well. They usually consist of leaving the town/ship, fighting some baddies, fighting a stronger baddy or the boss baddy, end mission.

But every single area is vastly different, and finding the crew members is much different for each.
I honestly think that the mission system has been much improved. And I love the change to the surveying. So much easier and faster, plus it actually has a purpose.
As for Bioshock 2, I heard the same thing, that its kind of old and not as awesome now that the shock from the first game wore off.
But every single area is vastly different, and finding the crew members is much different for each.
....Which kept it interesting. I really enjoyed doing the missions, I'm just noticing that they all follow the same basic structure. I think they could have changed it up in one way or another.

I actually really like it. The old weapons system was too redundant. You constantly found new weapons that there was nothing exciting about it. And you are frequently comparing weapons to see which ones where the best until you just eventually got your entire squad the Spectre weapons. But in ME2 each squad member can only carry two guns which makes more sense cause in the first ME even though they could carry all of them, they really could only train in two. So this even makes selecting your squad for each mission more meaningful. So for example, I got some pretty decent biotic skills under my belt, so when I go in on a mission, I may want Garrus for his sniping ability if we're trying to take a heavily fortified area, and then have Mordin with his tech abilities to compliment my biotics. I mean, however you wanna describe the process, basically the devs wanted you to carefully consider how you select your squad because depending on what types of enemies you're fighting and what the mission's goals are, it can really make a difference who you bring along. I was actually relieved to finally get Tali as an option last night because my squad was really lacking in overall tech prowess. Now I'm gonna go back and fight those three heavy mechs guarding that stash.

Oh, I love it! At first I was like, "Eh..." But now I'm like, "Eh, yes!" I love how each class to has a skill that is exclusive to that class. I'm a Vanguard and the charge skill is so amazing. But what's cool about it is how it's a tactical skill. You can't just use it without any consideration. Cause if you fly across the screen and strike your enemy, and there are other enemies around that one, suddenly you have no cover and you're totally exposed. Yet at times it's worth taking the risk because maybe I'll knock one guy down or kill him, then just blast the other guy real quickly with my hand canon.
Taking cover is critical most of the time. At first I found this a tad annoying cause my shields seemed so weak, but here's what I decided I like about it now: you can die fast in this game, but just as quickly can you kill most other things. Most people understand this in the game except for the mechs. But the mechs don't usually care cause they got a ton of shields and armor with limited intelligence.
I think one thing I'm disappointed in so far are the power weapons. Though I believed when they were designing them they didn't necessarily want there to be a single power weapon that could just magically solve all your problems. But ammo for them is seriously limited so I was hoping that with how limited it was that they would do more. I mean, the missile launcher for example is weak sauce. And the grenade launcher, total crap in my opinion. I love the Collector beam though. The flame thrower is pretty decent too when fighting a lot of organics.
