It was like the same crap over and over, a gradual leveling grind resembling that of an MMO... I mean it was exciting/fun early on but as it went on playing it felt like a chore.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
There are many games out there that have followed the general action rpg design and have come onto their own. Dungeon Siege is a good example of a game that broke away from Diablo and ended up being pretty damn enjoyable.
Sacred is also one of those games as well as Titan Quest. The dev's of TQ blame its failure on piracy... I blame its horrible internet play and shitty DRM. If it wern't for those 2 things the game could probably still be going strong today.
I don't compare it to Diablo. Other people did. Honestly, I wouldn't know why, but I've read it a few times in reviews and stuff.
People will do anything to pretend they're getting they're Diablo shot, I guess
woah... It never struck me as being like diablo even once. I mean, you can compare and contrast anything... but I never found myself reminded of the other when looking at either.
Yeah, or Titan Quest.. Guild Wars.. Hellgate: London.. And a dozen other games that tried to copy from Diablo but failed in getting the good things from D2 in their game and ended up in the pile of "boring leveling grind hack&slash". Heh, well I think we can safely say Guild Wars is a bit of an exception here: it was actually a good game Truly loved it. Much better than WoW, I wish I'd never played WoW actually. Shame Eye of the North went a bit in the WoW direction, oh well, that's a discussion for another thread.
Well, okay, I played TQ for awhile.. But now that I'm back to D2 I have to say.. I'm having more fun now than I ever did with TQ, and D2 is a much older game. Something went horribly wrong there.
I liked the first Dungeon Siege.. First game I ever played that had the idea of "use a skill and it improves". But yeah, it wasn't very tactical and the graphics and gameplay got boring as the game went on (too much of a grind in both areas). Never finished it.
Dungeon Siege 2, though.. Dang. Well the story was alot better, but that's about all you can say about it. It screwed itself over being caught in the middle of being something new/staying true to the first game/trying to be like Diablo 2, and ended up being nothing really special. Combat and skill system was just fucked up
Well anyway, now that D3 is announced all the "spiritual successor" crap is obviously refuted, but let's go back in time here. Well, I always knew D3 was coming, so yeah the "spiritual successor" thing never got me. But even if that's not the case, the only way that title would be justified was if it actually even got close to how many copies of D2 were sold. None of those so-called "spiritual successors" ever did. And none of them were as fun as D2 was (well, that can be argued, but to me none of them ever were). So I always took it with a grain of salt.
Heh, people even said "D3 = WoW". I mean, come on, people..
Never played Dawn of Magic, though, so can't say how much that imaginary title fits it. I just wish God of War came out for the PC.. But yeah, I might just get a playstation for that game :]
Neverwinter Nights seemed more close to a Diablo clone than Dungeon Siege imo.
Same thing.

Did people actually compare the two? I can see the others... but guild wars?? really??
~not going to buy a wow-ish diablo 3~

makes you wonder, Is Blizzard really capable of making a sequel to such a hugely successful Franchise.
Back on topic. yes they are capable. They did make Diablo 2 and now there making a starcraft 2 and in the distant future, a wow 2.

Before it was released.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
