So, I got to my usual Sunday night smoking thinking and was suddenly convinced that some douche bag Blizzard employee decided that they needed to control the flow of news and started to accidentally purposely release information and then promptly remove it just to create community buzz and get people to talk about the game more.
You could say it's been delayed because Activision doesn't want Diablo III to cut into Modern Warfare 3 Sales.
That was actually my very first thought.
Activision: 'Oh great blizzard, we plead to you; Let our profit slightly rise'
Blizzard : *Booming voice* We shall push back our behemoth of a game, that way more people will buy and play, so that you, tiny activision, may enjoy some small penance for your work'
Anyway, tinfoilhat and all, the actual most likely reason I've heard that makes some sort of sense is other countries not diggin the RMAH and all the legal shit. Either that or MW3. idk.
This particular reply is relevant to my interests:

First, EA says "ToR may be postponed until early 2012"...
...two days later, Blizz says "We're pushing Diablo 3 back to early 2012"...
...then, the VERY next day, EA says "Nevermind... ToR is coming out December 20th!!!"
Gotta love this game of chicken!!
It's my personal opinion that the game has been ready for a long time, they are only tweaking things according to the feedback they get from the beta to prevent patching after release of course.
The Demon Hunter is the best example of that, and the way the beta looks and feels as a finished product is another good example.
Just my 2cents.
No one wins in this situation, so hopefully it's not true.
Seems like everybody's thinking here And it also seems like I'm the only one who's happy about this push-back(No, I'm not in the beta yet). Remember the first version of Diablo 2. It was like when Windows XP first came out. Patch 1.10 could be the release and 1.13c could be 1.03c.
or you could say it was delayed due to the numerous bugs that only took 70 or so people to discover. Think about what would happen when it gets overloaded with 500, 1000, 10,000, etc.... Blizzard has never and will never give a release date for they always want to make sure that a fully functional product hits the shelf. Everyone says they are long time blizzard fans but it does not seem that way. Honestly it was always "beta would start in September" well it did, even if it was just press it started as the press is not "family friends" Blizzard also stated they were "aiming" for 2011, never "its coming out 2011" So if you really want to get into it the game was never delayed as it never had an official date... On the other hand I found my old emails from the diablo 2 beta and it went on for about 2 months and shut down 6 days before the game was released. I can easily see this beta going on for 4-5 months now. The game will probably hit around feb sometime...

If Activision really talked Blizzard in delaying D3 to help MW1 I mean 2, err 3. They all look the same to me, but I wouldn't doubt the question coming up in a major conference.
"Battlefield 3 is going to kick our ass, we have to make sure the very few left at least buy MW3. Please delay your Diablo 3 because we know the masses will buy it regardless of release date!"

This man speaks truth.
I don't even know why Blizzard wouldn't like fansite coverage. That builds up hype and gets them more sales. It would be counterproductive to work against the fanbase by purposely pushing back the release date.
And I don't get the impatience. This is Blizzard. Let them do their thing and you'll get a great game. They're obviously listening to us (given the speediness of the Demon Hunter resource revision), so what more do you want?
/patience is a virtue.

Blizzard releases games before they're done: Activision pushed them to!
Blizzard releases games after a significant delay: Activision pushed them to!
...wait whaaa?
You all make it sound like this is Blizzard's first title to take forever to be released
That was actually my very first thought.

Not but really...
One word: cataclysm.
Baal: "I shall take your position... into consideration."
*A minute passes. Activision [doesn't] explode.*
Baal: "Well, it seems your terms are (ignore "not") acceptable."
