There's an excessive amount of grey area when it comes to labeling/pigeonholing a person's sexuality. Much of the difficulty results from the lack of a standardized and useful definition for the various labels that we might give a person (ex: homosexual, heterosexual, asexual, bisexual, transexual, etc.). Human sexuality has a tendency to be very difficult to quantify or qualify because of the immense variation in individual thought, emotion, and behavior.
Generally the most effective way to determine what someone's sexuality is would be to ask them to label themselves, but even this method is far from perfect. I was going to explain why, and I still can, but you can probably figure out the rationale for this one on your own. I'll give you a hint, there are lots of confounding factors like thoughts, emotions, education levels, and religious beliefs.
I would argue that forming a label for a person's sexuality is of limited utility. A label cannot provide as much information as a detailed description especially due to the vague nature of "-sexual" labels. And if a person's sexuality is going to affect you in any way, it would probably be best for both of you to have a candid conversation with regards to the details of his or her sexuality or sexual preference.
So, with regards to Tchaikovsky, I think it's somewhat silly to try to label his sexual preference especially because we are not picking a specific point in time in his life. Also, we haven't had a thorough discussion of and concluded what qualifies someone as a "homosexual." I guess it's hard for me to accept a true or false question with regards to the sexuality or sexual preference of a [deceased] individual [who none of us knew personally]... Probably because I don't think that the labels we place on individuals are "fact."
It's kind of like if I said:
"Pure Physics is out of his damn mind, true or false?"
This question, and others which address what we think of a person, would be much better suited to a "how much do you agree with this statement on a scale of ..." type answer prompt. I mean, how would you prove that statement?

This is very off-topic, so if you wanted to discuss it beyond this, make a topic and link it here or PM me. Or we can agree to agree or disagree.
I'll first begin by stating that sexuality has no meaning or causality beyond what it's meant to mean, unless the person decides to cognitively or subconsciously build their personal identity through that sexuality. Which obviously always isn't the case.
Such things as sexuality in regards to a deceased person have no value of their own. The person is dead and so's their sexuality. They're meaningful only when using them in trying to understand a historical person's motives and actions retrospectively. Sexuality has no universally proven causality to anything (beyond sexuality, and that's going in circles), so in this case it's irrelevant what late person X fancied.
Then I'll continue by stating that the terms used to describe sexuality shouldn't be considered as labels, but more like adjectives derived from the observable facts and they have no set truth values. Those adjectives should not be given any meaning beyond their literal meaning, which I shouldn't have to repeat. As to whether sexuality can change as time goes by, I'll say that it is irrelevant, only the observable facts matter. And I'd add that it's indifferent whether any outsider knows about those facts.
Live and let live, I agree with you on that.
I agree. I think we both think the same thing, though I may not have expressed myself as clearly as possible (I should never post when in a hurry).
I also think that the question that I suggested as an alternative had flaws in it as well. My bad.
I suppose I just wanted something more specific or detailed than "X was a homosexual, true or false?" It kinda reminds me of that Pearl Jam song:
You're still alive, she said
Oh, and do I deserve to be
Is that the question
And if so...if so...who answers...who answers...
Who Answers? Who really can declare, prove, or test Tchaikovsky's sexual preference?
So to summarize. I agree with you Don. I'm sorry if I made a mess of explaining myself. And I also don't want to take this topic any more off-topic so I'm going to stop.

You really know the symphony inside out, do you? The complete work is called Symphony no. 9 in D minor by Ludwig van Beethoven, yet it's not what I'm referring to.
The answer has actually no true musical jargon. It refers to the part you mentioned earlier. The reason it also refers to the complete symphony is because that part is the most renown.
