Gaming is a way of life. And I think it's only that way because of certain games out there that define our experience. Whenever someone goes to the movies, they don't just plan on having a good time - they plan on getting away from their world and entering a new one filled with things that simply can't happen here on plain ol' earth. With certain video games this happens, and it happens for many, many hours.
Final Fantasy 7 is one of those games that will live in gaming history as one of the games that lives beyond its time. I'm playing through it right now, and I've never been so involved in the story as I am right now. The little time that I have to play, that time is important to me. I really am concerned for the fate of this little world that (basically) lives inside my head. I don't want to get all Matrixy on you, but what else is there, really? I don't know, maybe I get a little detached from reality.
Anyway, I just wanted to know if any of you experience things like this from games you play, and if so, what games?
The two most important games to me, have been Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid. Not that those are the two, that I spent the most time on, but they really brought me to a different place.
Ultima Online also did a lot for me, but in a wholly different way.
Definitely not my first time. But it has been about 5 or so years since I really played it again.
For some reason i cant replay FF7 for very long before i stop. It was amazing when it actually released and one of the best FF stories out there in my opinion. Obv sephiroth best villian.
My favs are FF4(US) and FF6. Just beat FF4:The After Years after clearing the dust off my wii, and currently playing through FF6(US3) on the wii to kill time waiting on d3.
Really like 10's grid system for skills and can replay that anytime as well.
I downloaded FF8 for PS3, because i had a missing disc on the ps2 version i have and within 10 mins of playing i stop the actual quest to nerd it up playing the card game within the game lol. Happens almost every time.
FF7 is by far my most favorite game of all time. I have played the whole thing through about 4 times. It really was way ahead of it's time. The story line is better than most movies that come out today, and movies need more emphasis on story because there isn't as much interaction.
I played FF10, and FF13 because i kept looking for another game that could compare to what I felt when I played FF7, and nothing has so far. I can't wait for another game to come out that has as good of a story, character development, action, and overall excellence that FF7 has.
FF7, FF3, and Tactics are my favorite games of all time. I bought brand new unopened copies of FF7 and Tactics last month because my other copies were played so much they weren't working anymore. FF3 is probably the hardest FF I have ever played. Chrono Trigger is a classic. My brother got both FF3 and Chrono Trigger couple years ago and payed out the ass to get them but I think it was well worth it. I grew up on these games and there the only console games I can play. All other console games are boring.
Now THOSE were the days when gaming was an actual experience and the music MATTERED.
Most games didn't have even have a SAVE/LOAD feature.
Zelda and Final fantasy... puhhhhlease...
Great games, and I've certainly played them as well, but they just don't really compare.
The music certainly did NOT.
Ahh, sweet memories. Played too many games I guess.
On terms of the OP, yes FF7 is also great, much better than 8.
But, 6 was better imo.
Kefka was just BRILLIANT in how he was portrayed as the ultimate evil.
Modern villains are just too predictable.
I definitely agree about FFVII; it really is what pushed me into the RPG genre when I got it for Christmas the year it came out. I actually played through it again earlier this year, and it is still good.
I haven't really been big on any of the new FF titles that came after FFX, but i'm still hoping they might pull off another one more fitting to my tastes in the future.
FFVII
FFIII (US)
FFX
FFVIII
Neverwinter Nights
Secret of Mana
Chronotrigger
FFXII
Legend of Dragoon
7th Saga
I've enjoyed every FF title except XIII honestly. I hate the new system. I actually played XI online for awhile and was quite immersed in it as well, but the best online world to spark my imagination and give me that "reading a great book" feeling was Neverwinter Nights. I never even played through the single player campaign completely, but some of the player generated servers were so amazing it made that game timeless. I can still go back and play on some of those servers today and feel overwhelmed with nostalgia.
I don't think the remaster will happen(remake sounds like they are going to change things). They have been trying to do this for years, probably longer than D3 has been in development for and still nothing. I would love it if they remaster FF7 along with Tactics onto PS3. Also Crisis Core, they should definitely put this onto PS3 as well. I'm not a fan of any FF after 8. They all seem the same exact thing to me. And I hated the new battle mechanics they had in 12. I like the old school stand and pick an attack.
