The changed interface and theme was a huge thing, i agree. i still feel out of place and this place doesnt feel the same.
Also, I gotta agree with what Epsilemna basically said... People know D3 is coming, and a lot of the news has already been made known. People are just going to blizzard's websites to stay informed instead of coming here. All we can do is try and make conversation. Contests used to be a HUGE part of this website but now aren't even looked at very often... Also, sig/avatar shops used to be cool but no one even cares...
The site used to speculate even if D3 was being contemplated let alone KNOWING is it being made. In a way it's ironic we don't have more users now that we know D3 is being made, but I for one see why it has lost popularity, just because of what this site used to thrive on is now gone.
I still love the site and am trying to think of NEW ways to get the site going, I'm just drawing blanks.
I think what has really made this place go downhill is not the content... Seriously, I don't think we thrive on quality, I think it's quanity. Don't get me wrong I love quality information on the diablo series but like I said I really think that just having a lot more people active and posting would entertain us. I hate sitting waiting an hour to see MAYBE one person post in a thread. It was cool back in the prime of this place, right after you posted 3 other people had posted...
But think about it, this is a forum built around a 10 year old game (more if you count the first Diablo), and a game that is still possibly years away. Of course interest is going to waver from time to time.
Granted, we should still be able to build the community around more than just a game, and we have to a certain extent. We're definitely a tight knit community, that's for sure.
Guess I've gotta make an effort to be more active around here, I wouldn't go so far as to say I've got a lot of swing around here, but I do my best :D.
Will step up news efforts!

This is a Diablo fan site, so I believe Diablo 1, 2 and 3 is what keep people interested.
Since I joined this community D1 and D2 is very innactive wich is the biggest problem imo (this side shouldn't count on D3 news...).
It's a Diablo site were people don't play diablo =[
I personally think people aren't coming here and posting because they already found what they were looking for by searching and seeing you vets discuss what they were thinking about, thus terminating their need to post, and the obvious lack of any solid, serious news about the game. Off-topic threads are easy to start but hard to maintain, and in a new community, unless you want to be known as the new spammin' troll you keep to your old community and post your silly thoughts and suggestions there.
When the shining lights of Blizzcon are lit beneath the clouded skies, beyond the tall and grassy hills, people will come running for this here site to channel their Diabloeqsue needs.
Before that I seriously doubt people will come here, and actually stay, unless they notice there's a core of active users posting interesting and funny stuff. That's when all of us come in, we need to keep this boat floating and try our best to make up new things to discuss. As someone said, contests is a way to keep people active, as well as having some kind of showcasing for fan-art and fan-creations and keeping those topics maintained.
Qft.
Of course, I always say that you guys make this site happen, so you're all more than welcome to try to increase activity here.
indeed... I think that maybe we got a number of situations that make activity reduce:
lack of D3 news... in january/february we had a lot of news and candy from blizz but they suddenly cut the supply and throw us just one or two bones now and then so that made the D3 news related part of the forum to freeze a bit.
then we had the random/spam forum debate, that made some of the non D3 related parts of the forum decay a little (URT happening and other unspeakable things :P)
add to that the rep system debacle and the experience system novelty... that draw some users away I think (too many fights is bad for a community)
the time-outs issues and the subsequent software change wich, as I said, things were somewhat complicated and then we didn't even know how to browse around the forums...
all those things combined made the forums a bit hostile for a while so maybe some of us decided to take a break until things calmed down... wich I think already happened as I noticed a great activity recovery in the last few weeks
Blizzcon and Invitationals always were the times with most activity around here.
i remember the 2007 invitational where StarCraft II was announced, we kept a live feed hoping it would be Diablo 3 that would be announced and next year commenting the images Blizzard had till the announcement. (was about the time we changed from Diablo3.com to diablofans.com) that was the time with the most and active users we had (at least till the time i went completely inactive).
anyway, if i'm back, i'm pretty sure many more can return in no time. thing is we need some more info flowing from Blizzard to keep things interesting, or we'll end up discussing other games while we're waiting for more info or the release of Diablo 3. then things are going to go uphill again with all the spec possibilities, bug discussion, strategies, screenshots etc.
I'm inactive because I prefer to talk to people on Steam/Xfire/MSN/Raptr, or Vent/Teamspeak and I play games with those I know. There's been no worthwhile Diablo 3 info in months so I have nothing really to come here to discuss. I browse on occasion to see what's new but I rarely post anymore, and really the only thing that could make me post more would be either beta announcement, release date announcement, maybe some info on our missing class.. new gameplay footage - ANYTHING.
Also I'm not sure if I like the new forum layout and such, the website looks weird.
Maybe having a single player tournament or a battlenet tournament. I likely will not join since I only play D2 mods at the moment but I can help with creating rules for one.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
People who say i'll post more in that or this section won't do much good. Posting isn't a duty it's supposed to be an engaging and creative thing. Chances are, you'll just become another posting robot and nothing more. What you all need is mental detachment, try and get a birds eye view of what D3 really is. What, in your head, it should have been. From there you can make up something interesting. Speculation made from an imagination standpoint alone just gives illogical pointless stuff. With detachment you're using an intellectual process, therefore guiding your imagination.
All the Vets have been talking about D3 for so long that they lost the ability to think outside the box, this is why someone suggested new recruits. To me, it's not a viable solution since our main problem is inactivity and people won't come to an inactive forum. The recruits will come when the forums will be healthy again.
A lot of people seem to forget that we are in summer, people have other things to do besides posting in a D3 forum. I mean have you guys ever thought that with the upcoming release of Starcraft 2, people are more inclined to talk about that? D3 has little to no news and is gonna release in a year or two! As for me, I've been working, training, playing violin, cycling outside, taking some sun. I'm enjoying my summer (except the job, man do I hate that place), maybe should you all do :). Maybe the best thing for these forums is some inactivity. One of my trainers once told me ; it usually takes 1 step behind to be able to do 2 forward.
I personally dropped a lot of activity after Diablo 3 was announced. All the speculation and wondering was gone, so really, why stay? I'll probably be more and more active as we get closer to release, but honestly, there isn't much you can do to keep things going.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
I agree with Siaynog, if your looking for someone to "lead by example" it would be those who are still our regular posters. I don't want this to sound rude or anything, but why complain about the lack of posts or inactivity, when you can do the posting to try and keep things moving? I'm trying to find things Diablo related to post about, but I'm kind of restricted on time because of R/L stuff.
I used to be a regular poster, came once a day for almost 2 hours (sometimes more).. but i got bored..now i come a few days a week to check on the major headlines.
Lately i've been trying to make some interesting posts, but i feel like i've already posted those things long ago lol

and on top of that, whenever i post something a little out of the box, all the so-called "hardcore" players shoot it down without any thought...
plenty of times i post something and people cling to saying they want it to be like DII lol
