I went outside once. The graphics were good but the gameplay sucked.
"Saving Private Ryan" is a great movie. The landing at Normandy scene is amazingly accurate, from what people who were actually there say and the movie has an interesting plot.
And if you are interested in a mini-series instead of just a movie "Band of Brothers" is really good. It is over 700 minutes long spread out over 10 parts, but it is probably my favorite movie/tv series based off world war II. And the same people who made "Band of Brothers" also made another 10 part miniseries called "The Pacific" that is going to premier on HBO in a few days.

Why the hell not? Pfft....kids.
Anyway, does it have to be movies? If not, then I highly recommend the Band of Brothers series as well. Way better than that slop that Spielberg churned out in Saving Private Ryan.

It isn't the Great War or WWII but Blackhawk Down was a good war movie.
And even though you said no 70's or 80's, I still insist on suggesting All Quiet On The Western Front. If you don't like older movies for some reason then skip the 1930 version, but the 1979 one is awesome and a must see. It is obviously based on the novel by the same title. Best WWI movie(best war movie in my opinion). I guess it's more about story than action, but it is most definitely a war movie.
Supposedly they're currently making another version as well.
Do you want a movie about death and violence and gore and special effects? Based on the nature of your request, I'm guessing yes. Go watch Pearl Harbour. It's not good, but neither are any movies focusing just on death and violence and gore and special effects.
If you want a movie that'll actually make you think and/or make you feel something (god forbid!) watch Life is Beautiful (original title: La Vita e Bella). You'd get bonus brownie-points for watching it in the original Italian with subtitles too!
