Basically guys I'm calling upon someone who knows more than me to help me out as to my part choices for my new computer. Basically, I am confused about my PSU, not that it's a not a good one (it's fairly reliable from the reviews that I've read) but whether or not it will be able to sustain my system.
I am no longer a Hardware savy person, with all the new graphics cards and cpu's out I never bothered to keep up past the GTX 295. So I'm fairly out of date and besides that I'm 16 and this is going to be one of the largest purchases I will make for a long time, so I want it to be a good one.
So the budget is $700, I've spent or will spend $635 (638 with DDR3 ram), so if you think it would be worth it upgrading a particular component that would also allow my psu to keep going or upgrade both maybe (I won't need a bigger harddrive either, I've been going with a 160gb for as long as I can remember and 320gb is gonna be more than enough space).
Basically, review and tell me what I might be able to do better (Please note all prices are in AUS and I am buying all parts based on this website http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf)
You can get 4gb ram for only a little more, and if you're going to be gaming it's worth it. Also the video card, pretty sure you can get one of the 5xxx series for only a little more. I payed maybe $130 CAD for an HD 5770, love this thing. Also I'm pretty sure the whol 5xxx series support dx11 so when (if) you upgrade to Windows 7 in the future you already have a decent card. Gonna take a look through the site to see if I can spot anything
Edit: I payed $150, on sale, my mistake. But I do see some 5xxx series up there for maybe $40 more... anyone know if they're any better? And I agree try to get a cheaper PSU, a friend of mine works for Futureshop and got me one with his discount, ended up paying $40 for a 650w
I would not skimp too much on the cost for a power supply. Wattage is one thing but it also depends on how the power is distributed along the individual power connectors.
You do need to look on what wattage you need for peak as well as how it is distributed for the voltage and the amp.
$150 power supply is overkill for his computer. Depending on the case he may have one that is good enough for his needs. Some cases do have good PSU's if the case was not a cheap generic one.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.

Nah mate the reason the case is free is because I'm only using the case, and it's an old case that we had for a computer long ago and hvn't done anything with.
My computer is getting 4 gb 1066 DDR2 ram for $45 from a friend who wants to upgrade and is giving me his 1 year old ram for cheap (still has a year warranty) now
The only thing is I'm afraid of buying a crap PSU simply because I can't afford to replace it or any parts that go boom because of it. And thankyou very much for the article on PSU's and how they work. I make make a more informaed decision about my psu now
Thanks guys!

"A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
I'd still say bump up to a 5xxx series card for dx11 support. Over the next while you may end up deciding to get W7, maybe win it, maybe get it cheap from someones student discount... that way when newer games start having dx11 you're already got a card that can do it. Diablo 3 might, anyone know yet? If so I'll be waving goodbye to XP and getting 7.
I just upgraded to windows 7. I'm thinking about upgrading to a new card for BC2, is there something I can get for under 100 dollars that is dx11 capable
oh yea sorry for not contributing to the OP but I don't know anything either, I just get all of my stuff off of newegg and have my computer genius brother help me

1. Please tell me there is a better AU website for pc supplies. That one is miserable to navigate.
2. Why did you decide on an Intel MB/CPU with a ATI video card?
3. Any reason why you picked a Micro ATX board? Case dimensions?
3. What do you plan to use this for? Any overclocking?
I'd say drop the intel stuff because it is WAAAAAAY overpriced for the performance you get. Go with something along the lines of a MSI 785GM-E65 AM3 motherboard if you need a M-ATX. It is similar to the one you picked out, but slightly cheaper, has a better layout, and has better features and construction overall.
Check out the AMD Phenom II x4 925 processor. It's a quad core, and will handle anything you throw at it. Or if you want to save a bit more money, look at the AMD Phenom II x2 550. Incredibly cheap, effective, fast, and has massive OC ability (Mine is at 3.8GHz).
Skip over the 2GB stuff and seriously go to a 2x2GB set. Anything by Gskill or Mushkin will be faster, more reliable RAM. Mushkin Silverline or Blackline will be loads better than Kingston, although it will cost a about 5-15 extra $ than a Kingston set because of the lower latencies (lower=faster).
Now that you have saved money on CPU and your MB, and it looks like you want an 80+ certified power supply, I'd say ditch the Thermaltake. That PSU has junk for amperage on it's 12v rails, not to mention it is split up into 3 rails and one of them is only 16A!!! The Corsair 550VX blows that Thermaltake out of the water. The one you picked is cheap for a reason, it is junk. If you want to be more future proof, look at the the Corsair 650w TX 80+ or the Antec 620w 80, both outstanding PSU's.
Oh yeah, and don't buy a 4xxx series GPU!! Get at least a 5750 for Diablo's sake!! More money, but you will be much much much happier in the end.
And finally don't forget to throw $30-50 at a CPU heatsink/fan combo.
Feel free to ask any questions or more specifics about your future build.
Here's what I built for ya on Newegg. I kept it under $630 US because that is about what $700 AU is.
Rosewill Wind Knight ATX Mid Tower
HP 1707w monitor (upgrading in a few months to probably an Acer 22")
Nvidia 9600GSO 512MB (severely OC'd and I will be upgrading to the 5770 in the next month)
Rosewill 550w psu (upgrading at the same time to a Corsair 800w PSU)
WD Green 1TB HDD 32MB cache
Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120mm Core Contact Freezer
Corsair XMS3 DHX 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel RAM (lat lowered to 7-7-7)
MSI AMD 770-G45 AM3 ATX Motherboard
Phenom ii x2 550BE 3.1GHz & 6MB L3 cache (OC'd to 3.8GHz)

Yeah you can with the low end ATI 54xx, 55xx, & 56xx series cards, but since there are exactly 0 games that use DX11 right now, I'd wait for the Nvidia 300 series to come out since that will drop the ATI card prices. Hell, by that time ATI will probably have their 6xxx series out!!

I didn't think of that :x. And there are a few with dx11 support, Battleforge/LotRO are two I know, and there's a list with like 15 more either out or in development. But yeah wait a bit and see the price drop, pay like ~$150 for a decent one, win.
So.... I just finished building this beast of a computer. I would advise not doing what I did... because I'm a geek, and I have the money right now to build said beast, and lack the patience to wait six to eight months.
And now, without further ado....

Pity? Oh come on! I'm a guy, and instead of buying the biggest and baddest truck // toolbox // house // ect. ect.... I just made the biggest and baddest computer. It's cheaper than most of the other "biggest and baddest" stuff that the other guys proclaim... and it's family friendly too!

This isn't the "Post your build thread". Yes it's very impressive that you have tons of money to spare. I assume you know what you're doing with computers, that is, unless you paid someone to build it for you:ban:. How about you contribute to the thread by making realistic suggestions to the original poster.

2. This build isn't final, I basically have a budget and I'm experimenting with lots of parts to get the best one, and I simply posted my current (at the time) build because I was sure I could do better, and besides that, the radeon card was one of the best for money there, but now if I go for a AMD cpu/mobo (I'm thinking a 945 phenom actually but the best motherboard for my cash is difficult to discover).
3. I piked that motherboard because it was one of the cheapest boards that supported i3.
4. Gaming, I don't know about overclocking as I've never done it before
Also I'm afraid your wishlist doesn't work.
EDIT: OP has been updated as to what I'm getting now
And ty for your advice on a good psu archie, but I need to sleep and will do what I can to lookup your part recommendations tomorrow morning.

Okay, that helps narrow it down a bit. But you didn't answer if you need a Micro ATX board.
As for the new board and RAM you've got picked out, don't get DDR2 RAM. The stuff is old and outdated with really slow speeds. You want something that will play games for at least a couple years before you need to upgrade again.
I forgot you need an account to view the public wish lists. I'll just link each individual product.

You don't want DDR2 boards. Period. This one is a Micro board with good ratings, good features, and quality

The powercolor card you picked is simply the cheapest 5750 card. I'd go with the Sapphire over it mainly because of durability and their high reputation.

Just my opinion on a better hard drive. You won't actually notice a difference in speed though. More space will be handy, especially if you start to add as many songs and games as I have.

Either fan will work fine. They are smaller fans for smaller cases, but are both very efficient fans.
