Most of mainstream Hollywood movies just suffer from these two flaws:
1) Predictable script
Or rather the plot follows the traditional dramatic structure written by the frigging Aristotle some 2300 years ago, now talk about cliches. For some reason Hollywood is so fixated on this that it annoys the heck out of me.
2) Unjustified (happy) endings that slap the wet trout at the rest of the movie
Many people enjoy happy endings while if they're unjustified they basically just show the middle finger at the rest of the story. A proper ending should both be unexpected AND seem totally logical and inevitable afterwards. A miracle happening and the hero living his life happily ever after is not inevitable or unpredictable.
And I'll be prepared to eat my socks if these aren't two of the core flaws of Avatar.
Uh these two things are what make 99% of good movies good.
Unlike allot of other people that are trashing the movie without seeing it, I have actually seen the movie.
And it was great! I loved it, it was kind of like fern gully+apocalypto+alien, and the special effects were really good.

You're absolutely right about me trashing the movie before I've even seen it. I'm merely forecasting my expectations of it because most big Hollywood movies I see are a big disappoint to me. And obviously you and I feel different about what makes a good movie. But good news for you, you are part of the majority of what people thinks makes a good movie. So you will enjoy most movies in the theater probably while I continue to hate most of them.
The critics are right about this movie, this movie does NOT suck at all!
It's FAR from a Special effect movie with no substance (like Transformers is).
I just can't take any of YOU seriously. LOL Gamers dissing QUALITY movies (And on top of that, have NOT even seen the movie) LOL I am not respecting any of your opinions
I've SEEN the movie, amoung many other regular average people also seen it, and we all believe the movie to be a Masterpiece (Best movie of the decade-ish) if not one of the BEST movies of the year! In fact, VERY FEW say it's not.
The movie has the BEST CG ever with actors giving Oscar-worthy performances especially in actress Zoe Saldana!
You tell me after seeing this movie, you wouldn't mind her character (Neytiri) to be your girlfriend... she is totally cute and believable in a CG character, that's a hard feat with CG!
To me, it's totally ridiculous/absurd to bash a movie like you are an expert, that you haven't even seen.
What has this world come to?
I don't know what kind of movies YOU guys find to be quality, then?
Transformers? Resident Evil? Mortal Kombat? The ones that critics say is bad?
Curious Cuz only if you find these movies to be very quality movies you would find Avatar to be junk.

I wanna see Avatar, but hell if I'm gonna go to the theatres with five thousand people, and be crowded out of there. I think its almost time to see it. :/
Also, when you go see this movie (especially as a doubter of the movie) you really should see it in 3D AND IMAX!
The 'Game changer' hype with the movie Is the 3D and IMAX technology that makes this movie much much immersive experience than Vs seeing it on just a 2D screen.
The 3D with this movie is light years better than 3D of other previous movies, and IMAX is of course the "Bigger is Better" concept with these kind of FX/Action-driving Dramas... like having a 56-inch TV at home to play your favorite games vs just a 17-inch monitor.

I actually thought that the Na'vi are really hot, and both Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver look much better in their Avatar form. Its also clearly a reflection of Sigourney's character to show her as being really happy and youthful as an avatar but really grumpy and kinda gross as a human.
I kind of wanna see it just so I can laugh at it and write about how shitty it (likely) is. Big budget special effects movies do nothing to impress me anymore. And quite frankly, those blue people look utterly ridiculous.
I think you lack imagination and wonder why your even here supporting a video game. If you can't understand a movie like that how could you understand a game like Diablo?
Avatar is a testament to how far we have come in the field of visual arts. It is a true masterpiece and deserves a spot next to the Mona Lisa. It embodies everything we have achieved in said field.
Centuries ago we crafted masterpieces on canvas, now we make them not only on canvas but in cinema, video games, and other digital outlets.
Human creativity never ceases to amaze me and makes me happy to be human.
Now, in terms of plot it was cliche. A story that has been done before. But guess what, here is a little wake up call, it's ALL been done before. Especially in terms of mainstream entertainment. It's like that episode of south park that stated simply: "The Simpsons already did it."
On top of that note...It also sent a wonderful message: Save the green stuff!
I'm a tree huger at heart.
Yet another thought, It made me re-appreciate the landscaping of World of Warcraft, yet another marvelous creation of man in terms of visual aesthetics.

I completely agree. I withheld my opinion of the movie until I actually watched it. And you know what? This movie was actually really good!
I wouldn't go as far as saying best in the decade or even the year, as Inglorious Basterds (IMO) is a far better movie.
The acting is very well done and believable, for any movie let alone a nearly full CG movie.
Plot, as many others have said, is faily contrite, but not absurdly so. It doesn't detract from the movie at all, until the final scene. But even then, it was mainly just a bad call on the Director of Photography's part. You'll know it when you see it.
This movie is most definitely worth seeing in theaters. Guys can go see it, kids can go see it, and couples can see it. By some miraculous feat, they hit pretty much every single demographic with this movie.
I want my grandparents to see it, so I can just see their reaction to the CG. XD
Just go see the movie and be entertained. Because in the end, isn't that all a movie really is?

We should all root for this movie to succeed because only then I think will Video game movies in this quality be made in the future.
People in the video game industry will look at say "Oh I can make Mass Effect movie now, I can make Diablo movie now... all thanks to what Avatar/James Cameron did to pave the way... it's not impossible anymore to make believable CG characters that act real!"

This movie was excellent, extremely well put together and I have no criticism for it whatsoever.
James Cameron really made a great movie. Normally when I go to a movie I'm excited and hyped up and the film never ends up meeting my expectations. For this movie, however, it totally hit the spot. Everything was perfect. The most important thing for me is character development. If I don't care about the character I'm not going to care what happens to them. Acting plays in this too. If there's shitty acting I can't get into the character. Not once throughout the entire 2 and a half hours did the thought occur to me that the acting or characters could have been better. An example.. some of the best movies I have ever seen have me hating a character to the point where if I see the actor in other movies it incites negative emotions. The villain in the movie was a nasty colonel who wanted to wipe out the indigenous populations home, beliefs and way of life. At certain points in the movie I was raging at this character. Adrenaline was pumping through my veins. I wanted to kill him. It was fucked up.
The story was predictable? Not exactly. Most people prefer it this way. Only part that was predictable is the protagonist going up against the crises, experiencing repeated failures, and then succeeding in the climax. The love story was obviously going to happen as well I suppose. But these things make a good story! It's just how it is. This isn't the kind of movie where you want shit to go bad. You want a happy ending. It's that kind of story. But there were plenty of little things where you're like damn that's awesome I didn't expect that.
Overall the movie wasn't all that interesting to me but I have to admit it was amazingly well done.
Problem is that there's movies, and then there's movies.
There's movies that are mainly a business, created to entertain the audiences, give them a roller coaster ride of emotions, make them laugh, cry, be afraid or be packed with adrenaline.
Avatar falls in this section. These movies are not so much "good" as they're entertaining, they can be good in their own sense though. It is not necessarily a bad thing if a movie falls into this section, don't get me wrong. But once you've watched more than a thousand movies, you're just not so easily taken by the roller coaster any longer.
Then there's movies that are an art form, that are meant to deliver a message - make the viewer watch the world from a new perspective, make the viewer think of something they hadn't before. Make them baffled, make them stare at the end credits with a "WTF?"-stare.
These kind of movies will never be as mainstream, because they're harder to watch - more challenging, more in your face, less of a mere emotional roller coaster but more of an intellectual challenge.
A good way to differentiate these two types of movies is to ask, does the story loose its effect/grip if the viewer knows the end result? Is the film interpreted the same on the second watch?
Don't take me wrong, I think Avatar is basically finishing the trip that started early 80s. We're already in the era where CGI is indifferent from real images. That's impressive on some levels indeed.
That movie was busting at the seems with art. You can keep your other movies that are an art form if this is not one of them.
The story was solid which supported the amazing visuals.

Good point. The only thing that came close to the kind of CG in Avatar was Blizzard cinematics... and those are alot shorter than a full movie lol.
Nah, not even those came close. Avatar is light-years ahead of anything I've ever seen.

Yea...we don't have any Imax around here... And I don't think the movie theatres do the 3d thing around here, though I could be wrong...
Is it really better in 3d/Imax?

Yes, like I said this movie's 3D is lightyears better than previous works (Beowulf, etc)
And IMAX = Always the Bigger is Better concept
Like you would see pores on these CG Navi's face better
Neytiri on PC screen (650 x 350 pixels)
Neytiri on IMAX (6 stories) you would see her pores
