Just turn of the damn logic part of your brain o.O There are blue aliens that are strikingly similar to humans, that is unrealistic but accepted in a sci-fi movie. Why can't motives be unrealistic but accepted too? (in the right movie) It is pretty obvious that Cameron didn't even try to make it realistic (just like a sci-fi isn't trying to be realistic), because if he did we would be doing the right thing to point out errors. But right now we might as well point out errors in Tom and Jerry...
Stop it with this "turn your logic/brain off" nonsense, really. Alright, we get it that it's a sci-fi movie and all that stuff, but somethings still have to be put within a specific frame in order to be believable. Many of the unbelievable things in Avatar could have been easily replaced with more believable things. A Helium isotope, like the one in the moon, which could be an energy replacement, MUCH more efficient than petroleum is what scientists are looking at now. Cameron could have made up a story regarding the Helium isotope instead of the unobtanium one. Not that difficult, and much more believable. Something doesn't have to be INSANELY expensive for humans to go out of their way to get it. Just ask Bush.
That is a well done review Don, and as unbiased as I have read so far.
That is basically what I've told everyone that I know. Definitely worth seeing, for the technological aspect, but don't expect too much of the story and acting.
I still hold that Neytiri was acted the best with the "evil" general guy the worst acted and incredibly 1 dimensional. Everyone else fell somewhere in the middle, although I feel Sam Worthington did a pretty damn good job. Also, the dedication to grow his upper body like that with his legs that small. (That is unless it was GC and I just couldn't tell.
1. The arrows that went threw the vehicles went only through the scorpions. They never went through the main ship that the general was on.
2. The Na'vi finally got their arrows to penetrate once they approached the scorpions from the air. They kind of did a dive bomb maneuver that probably helped the arrows trajectory and all that. Plus, when the arrows were unable to penetrate "Papa Dragon" they were on the ground shooting their arrows at a bad angle.

My opinion and a lot of other peoples opinion, is that this movie is unlike any movie that I have ever seen. When asked if I liked it I can only respond "it was different". I would say much like how Star Wars was "different" in the 80s. I can definitely see myself liking it though and getting it on DVD.
As far as 3D goes it was amazing, almost jaw dropping and I wouldn't be surprised if some peoples' jaws did drop. But I'm not used to seeing entire movies with so much 3D so it became almost tedious after an hour and a half. For this reason I will probably like it better on DVD.
But all of that aside, there is definitely a lot to think about after watching this movie. For starters, I thought a lot about the terrible genocide that took place in North America. Over 11 million Native Americans were wiped out, with some estimates reaching 13-16 million. As a result, only 500,000 Native Americans were left in in North America at the end of the 19th century. Populations are now only scraping 2 million, not accounting for the fact that Native American Populations are now diminishing through marriage.
It is sad that most people think that the holocaust is the biggest or worst genocide. It doesn't even come close.
Second, the philosophical aspect of Avatar completely makes it worth it. To see the development Jake Sully goes through is incredible. The most memorable line for me is when Jake says that real life was beginning to feel like the dream and that the dream was beginning to feel like reality. Or when Jake realized that his dream of bringing peace through force was wrong, "I dreamed I was a soldier who could bring peace. But eventually, you always have to wake up." -- Jake Sully. The list goes on.
It definitely isn't my favorite movie and I have trouble deciding if I actually 'liked' it. But to say this is a bad movie is completely ignorant. It is a fantastic movie, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea.
Emil - You know what, I forgot about the pilot. Horrible freakin job of acting. But when has she ever done a good job? Most definitely not Fast and the Furious! I take back my previous statement about the General being the worst, the pilot was the worst acted IMO. I am pretty sure they cut half her scenes too. I mean the character was so uninteresting that I actually forgot about her!
In the end she probably should have been replaced with some cocky hot shot pilot that was acted by a male nobody. No offense to the females on here, but there aren't a lot of women pilots, let alone good women pilots. Statistically their brains function just different enough that they have a hard time with dog fights and tracking multiple targets. Or so says my Aerospace science book and instructor.

So "I did not sign up for this!" said by a soldier that leaves the group isn't cliche :P? (the whole pilot was one big cliche) And it is mostly the style of the lines and the way the characters act that is cliche, not the words they use. But I actually liked the cliche-ness in this movie.
Instead of that line, he could have said "Well fuck this!!" That would have been a much stronger choice. Although it probably would have upped the rating from "G" or whatever it was.
Yeah, but a more acceptable cliche in my mind. lol. They had to have someone on the inside to fly them out when things got hairy. The next choice would have been to get that other science geek to steal one of the helicopter ships. And then we'd all be asking, "How'd he learn how to fly?" "Did he download it via the Matrix?"
A better option may have been to have the pilot actually get shot down in that first assault. A spear in one of those props surely would have sent it to the ground. Now once she is on the ground, she would see the destruction first hand, and have a change of heart. She would still have to get picked up by a medic heli-ship as the military is on their way out, so she could be on base for later.
That's a better plot device right? Maybe I should go work for Jim Cameron.
Alright just saw this today. I take back my previous assumptions. It wasn't a bad movie.
Especially if you pay the 12$ to see it in 3D. It was worth it. Sort of cheesy, but not as much of a kids movie as they made it seem. Underlying story is pretty good, few cases of plot induced stupidity aside.
All in all it kept me entertained for 2 and a half hours, and the 3D was really nice, even without the 3D the world of Pandora was lush and colorful.
Without a doubt the understatement of the new decade!

You need nothing to see this movie and be amazed, with no enhancements it is nothing short of the most beautifully designed piece of art man has ever created. IMO

Eh, just looked kind of stupid to me. I will probably Netflix that shit. I'm really picky on what movies I go see now since the price is so steep. The only movie I plan on spending any money to go see is The Book of Eli.
It worries me that people in this forum have obsessed over economical and biological details down to the bone. I think everyone agrees this movie was not meant to present an outstanding story, but instead a visually appealing and graphically boundary-breaking experience.....?
Actually, pretty basic physics explains the whole arrows thing. It's the difference between firing the bolt from above while in forward motion and at close range compared to firing from far away, on the ground, while retreating. One will definitely have considerably more energy than the other.
But I'm not a math person, so I wont try and back up my claims. Anyways, like you guys were saying, it's just a movie anyways, so who cares really?
