Hello and welcome.
I though I'd make a thread about what screamo actually is because everywhere I go there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding and misuse of the term screamo.
"Screamo" is a music style that developed out of Emo, more specifically hardcore Emo, in the early 1990s. Characteristic of the genre are the screaming vocals (not growling). Other than that, it's fairly hard to classify (particularly since the rule about screaming vocals is bent fairly often).
Much like its predecessor, it's very much an underground genre with virtually no mainstream recognition.
However, in recent years, the term "screamo" has been misused very commonly to describe postpunk, pop-rock, rock, metalcore, or hardcore bands with emo influences. Bands like Taking Back Sunday, Glassjaw, Thursday, Underoath, Refused, Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Unearth, Atreyu, Senses Fail, Finch, Hawthorne Heights, Emery, Saosin, Silverstein have been wrongly called screamo in the press.
Well, I can tell you emo was coined from Guy Piccotto's former band Rites of Spring (he has been in Fugazi since the 80's) and he does not acknowledge creating "emo"...he just played the type of music he wanted to and people slapped a label on it. It's similar to straight-edge which people coined from Ian McKaye's (Also a Fugazi member) band Minor Threat who had a song title of the same name. He doesn't acknowledge creating the sub genre and thinks it's pretty stupid that people took it that far. Just a little history for those interested.
Plus appealing to teenagers by making angry or depressing music is like shooting fish in a barrel. I remember when this style was just coming out back when I was in a Ska band in high school. Well, might not be when it actually started, but i remember bands who played this way and it was the first time I ever heard anything like that. Why do people have to categorize everything anyways, most bands have a range of influences and even if you break it down further most musicians have a range of influences.
I'm just so relieved that one of my favorite bands, Unearth, has just been removed from the screamo genre by a screamo fan. Its metal and that's all there is to it.
today it is simply impossible to classify some band in one strict genre. and it is stupid to even do it. only immature kids go like "ooohhh, I listen to rock and nothing else..." well, Bob Dylan is rock and so is AC/DC, and so is Pink Floyd... it's generalising in general
I have no problem with you whatsoever, but you should consider increasing your musical knowledge before you post posts like the one you just submitted.
Tell me that Bloodbath are anything but Death Metal, or Carpathian Forest are anything but Black Metal. They can't be classified into anything else. Just because you don't know a band that doesn't fit strictly into one genre..doesn't mean there isn't any band out there that does.

While I agree with you mostly, I disagree on the fact that they make "angry" or "depressing" music to appeal to teenagers.
That's what bands like My Chemical Romance and Slipknot are for, they appeal to the teenagers because they are played on MTV and the radio and lets face it, that's where most teenagers get their musical interests from.
Not these bands, who are mostly in the DIY scene, hardly any average teenager knows of them.
Some of the screamo bands just are angry at a lot of things and choose express themselves through their music and lyrics, not necessarily trying to appeal to anyone in particular.
Also classifying music is not very important indeed, if you like it you like it. However genres make it easier to find bands that share a similar style you like.
Meph, I'm not going to argue with you. tried that some time ago but couldn't get to you in any possible way. so, please, don't talk to me about music.
and I have enough musical knowledge thank you.
I would like to ask you though, why do you have the need to classify a band in any genre in the first place?
Their songs? The majority (if not all) the songs by the bands I specified, fit into only ONE genre. They can not possibly be fit into any other genre. While some bands are diverse, dabbing into more than one specific type of music, like Opeth, Arcturus, Metallica, and many other bands..many others similarly, do not.

All along I thought it was a style of singing.
Thanks for clearing that up.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
