Johnny here. You may remember me from such threads as "Your Zombie Contingency Plan" or "You'll never believe what I did with my cousin!" Anyways, I just graduated from Air Force basic training last week. It was a blast.
I see that Blizzard waited until I was gone before revealing another class. Typical.
Now I'm going to tech school for the next 6 months. To give this thread some actual purpose, any questions about the Air Force or basic? Anything else big happen in the past couple months?
Nice to be back to semi-civilization.

Thank you! It's called imagery analysis. Looking at pictures and identifying stuff. It's supposedly one of the more learning intensive tech schools of the Air Force.

Nice! Welcome to the military. I'm glad to see YOUR basic was a blast. Mine was 3 months of getting blasted.
What exactly does the Air Force focus on during training? Marines are ground, so we do alot of field and stuff like that. Do you guys shoot? What weapons systems are you taught, or will be taught?
I just got back in August 20 from my MOS training. You see, I'm a Marine. So yea! Lemme know what kind of stuff you do, though I was in AF Junior ROTC I'd like a clearer idea of what actual Air Force is like.
And please don't take offense when I talk disparagingly about other Services. I'm a Marine, I do that sometimes. But its all meant in good game.
Haha, basic actually sucked. Not that it was particularly hard, it just sucked ass being limited to letters as your only form of communication.
Let's see. Our PT was pretty easy. Our weapons training is a joke, we had a day of training each on the M16 and M9. You didn't even need to qualify to graduate. I, being the straight killer that I am, qualified as a marksman.
The culmination of our training was the BEAST (Basic Expeditionary Airman Skills Training), where we lived in nice air conditioned tents and pretended to be in a deployed environment. We practiced UXO procedures (identifying, setting up cordons, etc), post attack recon, and self aid/buddy care. Those were the main things we learned.
The majority of our time at basic was spent folding clothes. They put a ton of emphasis on attention to detail, so everything has to be impeccable. The worst case of this was when one of my wingmen spent a solid 45 minutes folding one towel. That was just annoying.
Don't worry, I won't take offense. Our basic is a joke compared to yours, and our TIs reminded us of that. Someone made the mistake of referring to basic as "boot camp" to a TI, and got his ass reamed.

Lol. At least you don't have any delusions about it. I was at Walmart buying some headphones a little after I got back, and saw someone with a shirt saying:
"Air Force Basic
8 weeks of Hell, lifetime of Pride!"
Bunch of flames and stuff on it too. I asked him if he was serious, and he gave me a look like who was I to mock him. He told me yea, its not as easy as it sounds, to which I replied to by pointing at the small Eagle Globe and Anchor on the left breast area of my shirt. He got the point lol.
But yea! We all need each other right? I appreciate your patriotism, joining in a time of war. Put your skills and your knowledge to good use, so that we don't have to lose my boys on the ground, and we can get as many of us in the service back home nice and safe. Though most Marines, (even me) might give you crap for joining Air Force instead of Marines, at least you joined! Our military makes up about 1-3% of our total population if I remember correctly. It's definately not for everyone. And of our military, I think its less than 1% that is in the Marines. Marine life is definately not for everyone
But as I said, thanks for joining, and always remain Semper Fi.

i used to be in the military too, Combat Engineer
just finished my 10 years reservist cycle this year
so yeah, we always tease our friends who were clerks or in air force or navy.

The thing is, Air Force basic doesn't need to be hard, because 95% of AF jobs are non-combat related. For the combat jobs, there are tech schools for training. Off the top of my head, combat controllers, pararescuemen (PJs), TACP (tactical air control party), and security forces receive additional combat training. Our combat controllers and PJs are some of the most hardcore warriors in the world. One part of pararescue training involves being held underwater until your heart stops, and having another PJ trainee bring you back to consciousness.

if that happened in Singapore, parents are gonna be up in arms about it, demanding that the Ministry of Defense stop it.
we have a conscripted army so nearly all of us just want to go in there serve our time and get the hell out.
out army has become so pussy these days going to basic training is like going to a holiday camp.
recruits can't be made to do too much push-ups or "punishments", no training during heavy rain (fear of lightning), log PT, rifle PT has been banned etc etc.
our army nowadays is really for show
Army Basic is really that slack?
I was thinking about enlisting into the Army, but I would rather go into something that the training is worth all the time away from home.
I don't wish to take a vacation.
Can anyone on here tell me about Army Basic?

Kid, NO BOOT CAMP is a Vacation. I dont care what Boot Camp you go too. Boot Camp is a Rude Awakening for ALOT of people, but of course its job is to turn you into a Military person, and throw out of your head all of the Delusions you might have about life. Not to mention it is also one BIG giant Mind game. The Trainers will fuck with you all the time. It can be funny sometimes juuuust dont let them catch you laughing.
But I give special Respects to the Marines, 12 weeks of hell.(they have the longest Boot Camp)
Army and Marines however get more Combat training i beleive though, so youl get to learn all the infantry combat operations and stuff.
P.S. If you fucking fail at Boot Camp THEY WILL keep your ass there longer, its called a ASMO....i think.....something along those lines i forget.
Yes Some people will say Boot Camp is easy, and for some it is, but for another.....IDK 85% its a rude awakening to the real world.
OH and i almost forgot, Thanks Johny for serving, I have a few friends in well....every branch of the military XD.
"One part of pararescue training involves being held underwater until your heart stops, and having another PJ trainee bring you back to consciousness."
I just got word this is bullshit. Sorry about that. Although they do bind your arms and legs before throwing you into a pool on a daily basis.
Also, no one said anything about Army boot camp. I hate when people use 'army' and 'military' interchangeably. Just keep in mind what branch you're talking to, please.
And yes, although in retrospect I can say it was easy and even funny at times, it sucks going through it. You ever see grown men cry? It's your whole life being flipped upside down for several weeks, a 100% hostile environment that you have to get used to.
Meteoro is right about everything. The military absolutely makes you a better person. You'll learn to appreciate luxuries like time, food, time to eat food, books, music, movies...and women. Oh my god. The females looked better and better every week XD
If you're interested in enlisting at all, go talk to a recruiter or check out the branch website. There's no commitment involved in that. Just make sure you run the show, get the info you want, and don't get talked into anything. My recruiter was great, but apparently that's a rarity.

I'd want all the training anyway.
It's quite useful. I honestly think every able-bodied citizen should be required to take basic training.. a lot of people will be grateful afterwards.

Bootcamp is one of the least intelligent places on earth. Only certain individuals need to go there, and that's not up to something like a government to decide. Don't even go there, that's a very horrible idea.
I always wondered what it would be like to be a Marine Sniper. I actually considered enlisting, but I never had the time to actually talk to a recruiter since I had Honors classes throughout high school and some pretty nasty College classes now.
Here is one question I really want to know: What is Hell like?
