I have also checked if my PSU handles this and yes. Even with 50% aging and 100% peak load I still have 100W to spare
Its not weather your psu can handle it...its more can your op system handle it....32 bit op system only recognizes 4 gb max while 64 bit recognizes more (not sure the number...its like 16 or something)
Wow, thanks a ton. That helps a lot. I read that the 9600 GSO needs a 400w PSU. I didn't think that my little baby 250 was going to be enough? I figure if its fine, I'll just run that for a while until its time for me to upgrade to something else in a year or two. For that price, its basically impossible to beat. I'm gonna get that card right now if it doesn't take any more power. If not, maybe I'll just buy a 400w psu, and be done with it.
The 6-pin power connector gives an additional 75w besides the 75W the graphics card receives from the motherboard. Theoretically the most your card would use is 150w. But it only just barely uses more than what the PCIe x16 1.1a slot gives it. By just looking at it, I'd say system uses about 230W-240W at peak.
The manufacturers always overblow system requirements for the cards. I've used the 8800gt on a 20$ 300W generic Ping-Pong Chinese psu for well over a year, with an overclocked e4600 to boot. I also recommend this path because unplugging, bolting, opening etc. might not be hard, but it might be long nerve-wasting work for someone who hasn't done anything like that before.
But you have to understand the risks of psu failiure. Even top class psu like PC Power & Cooling can puff in smoke and take down your entire pc with it. So.... it's up to you. But I can pretty much guarantee it will work no problems with the psu you already have. But working close to max as well.
Another thing is that no one, especially not some snot nosed kid on a forum can tell you what system reqs for games that haven't been released are. But this config will run every game out there right now with very playable framerates on max or near max quality settings on your resolution no problems.

Oh, well then. Hmm. So I think I'll go ahead and order that 400w psu that you pointed out, just so I'm on the safe side then.
Thanks for all your help. I would have been asking my room mate all these questions, because he's a big time gamer. But he is still in Boston for a little while longer.
Its great to have a helpful community you can count on. Dfans FTMFW!
This should support any upgrades to future cards for me for at least a couple years. It has a ton of great reviews, and well,... the blue led's are eye grabbers.
I don't pure game. I do lots of 3d design. The fact of the matter is also I really only have 2gb I am just borrowing 2gb extra to do some testing. So technically speaking I still have 2 slots left open for DDR2, while my DDR3 slots just collect dust and rot :).
Motherboards that can use multiple types of ram are silly imo. No real practical benefit.

That will just run my wallet for more money. New gen will need more Power which means new PSU.
No way any single pcb card that will be released within near future will use more than 600w total including entire config. Not considering your specs anyway. Just add i7, 4 more hdds and it's a different story though.

When the new gen come out it will probably be time to get Windows 7 which is a huge chunk of cash. Not to mention the new gen will be hugely expensive probably.
Pay? Early morning laugh
Amusing.

The Corsair is rated at a continious power rating (it's more like 450W) and are less liberal about placing big numbers than brands like Rosewill, besides it's not running on multiple rails like the Rosewill one and has more amps on the 12V+ which is important. If you look around on 30A psus on google, mostly 550w supplies will pop up.

Most of the reviewers comments are:
"Very good looking power supply with a HUGE fan on the bottom, too.";
"Has a bright blue light inside, which could be annoying if you keep it running a lot."; JUST LOL
"The pictures show this PSU upside down.";
"It would be pointless to tell u the parts i use this power supply for sense the parts are all deactivated now, Will except for a few." etc.
It's only fair to say that some people are idiots.
They are both good brands. Pick the Corsair one just in case

Alrighty. I took your advice. I just ordered the Corsair, the 9600 GSO and the 6pin cable, just in case. Newegg said it should be here within 3 days. That'd be real nice.
Uhmm... the psu already has a 6+2 pin power connector for a graphics card so you didn't have to order it, but I guess if you ever decide to go sli with another 9600gso you could do that
Just so you know, the graphics card is not like the 384mb versions with a 192-bit interface. It has full 512mb of ram like the 9600gt and ALL the 96 stream processors that the 384mb versions have (not half that like most 9600gso 512 versions have). Which makes it a 9600gt with lower frequencies that you can later overclock through the roof and into 8800/9800GT territory.
And that PSU you ordered - it can power a basic system with a gtx280 and an i7 proc (not overclocked much mind you), so you definetly have some upgrade potential.

Yeah, I did some reading on the capabilities of that card, and when moderately overclocked, it is more powerful than most stock 8800gt, and not very far off from the 9800gt. With more efficient fans, or liquid cooled, it is almost even with the 9800gt except for, um, shaders I think is what I read. I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to computer builds, but I at least read up on stuff so I'm not just taking one person's opinion, no matter how knowledgeable. No offense intended, I just like to be sure before dropping cash.
SLI is exactly why I went ahead and got the cable. I mean it is only $3, so I'm saving on shipping for later.
280 eh? I'll probably wait on shelling out $400. But it sounds like a good psu.
Actually the 9800GT is EXACTLY the same card as the 8800GT. Down to the smallest nick on the card.
They basically just slapped a 9 on the beginning and presto: It's a new graphics card for people to buy. I bet there must have been a ton of jumping from 8800GT to this new and strangely inexpenive 9800GT.
There were some vendors that released some cards with a die shrink, but I basically have not come across any. Nvidia got a very bad rep for doing this.
Anyway make sure you get your rebates man. I don't know how shipping goes, I always buy in stores.

The 9800GT I was looking at was 1GB as apposed to 512mb, so maybe that's where the difference in performance is.
Oh yeah, I already printed the rebate paperwork. Newegg has a really good rep on shipping, and within about 5 minutes, they confirmed that the package would be shipped out by friday and would be here either Saturday or Monday.
Edit:
I got the card and the PSU yesterday!! I slapped it all together (I didn't realize how easy it is to change things on a desktop), and I've been testing out all my games on maxed settings. Man it blows me away!!
Titan Quest maxed, C & C 3 maxed, Sins of a Solar Empire maxed (obviously), Rise of Legends maxed, Age of Empires 3 maxed, and Black & white 2 maxed. And in stock form, I still haven't gone over 56 degrees!!! HAHAHA!
Time to start overclocking this baby!! XD
One company overclocked to 680Mhz, and the factory setting is only 550Mhz Core Clock. I probably won't go as high as 680, probably just a tad over 600.
I think I'm gonna have to get some higher demanding games to put this card to the test a little bit. Arkam Asylum shall be the first test.
I have an 8800 GTX. It plays everything on max settings, and it's not as pricy as the new cards out there. Want my opinion? 700$ cards are a waste..because a month later, they will put out a newer card, with better specifications and all that. Settle on a decent, not-so-costly card.

As of right now, I'd personally settle on a GTS250/GTX260 or HD4850/4870.
