Has anyone tried those nVidia goggles? I've been interested in them for a while (I'll admit, I want to scare the shit out of myself with FEAR2 again), but never knew anyone who had them. Is it worth it in your opinon?
You know those guys who talk about professional gaming, and how HDR and other effects simply get in the way of being good? That's arguable, but, damn, the fact that the nVidia goggles are distracting is NOT arguable.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Has 1792mb of vram for 50$ more. On the specifications it says Open GL 3.0 does that mean the card will only run with Open GL 3.0?
And another thing. Power. It says it requires 550W PSU minimum. I want to know if my psu will be able handle the card with my other parts
My specs are.
Intel Q6600 Quad core 2.4ghz not oc
Asus P5KC motherboard
2GB Ram DDR2 (forget the speeds)
No soundcard
WD 1.5TB HDD 7200rpm (eco friendly ones)
WD 500GB HDD 7200RPM (Not in use atm Will be once I get W7)
Antec 600 or 650 PSU (Forget which one it is)(In this case will it run with the 600W :S)

I was wondering (from another persons standpoint) if my system was any good, i myself think its good but i want your thoughts....
My specs:
AMD Phenom 9950 (o.c'd to 3.1)
4 Gb. kingston ram (
HIS ATI Radeaon HD 4870 1gb.
no soundcard
Asus M4A79 Deluxe motherboard
500 gb harddrive
850 watt power supply
Monitor: Sony Bravia 40"
What is your monitor? If you're gaming below 2560x1600 (30" monitor) you won't notice a difference from the extra memory.
I'm running a 21" LG and a 24" LG
Paladin88 I am running a 8800GT 512 SC atm.
Also found out from other folks that I will need a new PSU. So should I go for a 750 or a 800. I plan to buy more ram eventually don't know how much though.
You guys buy pretty much solid "name" power supplies there from newegg and the like, so I guess it's probably accurately a ~600/650w psu.
You don't need a better power supply even if you overclock, unless you use multiple cards or something like a GTX295.
My advice? With that graphics card you already have (the evga) I bet you've probably played through most blockubster "demanding" games there were.
So why not wait a month or two until newer generations from ati and nvidia come and then see what's on the market and what games need a more powerful graphics card? Keep your cash for now, your comp is fine (Yeah I know it's hard not spending money). Prices of current hardware will drop as well, but always try to get double, tripple times what you already had when you decide to splurge cash.

It's not only just gaming. It's for 3d game design and the sorts. Also when the new generation of video cards come out then I'm spending money on a new PSU and a graphics card that costs 4x as much as a 275 lol.
This looks like the place for me, as I've got a question on my planned upgrade too.
The current system is a SR5610F, the stats are:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core 2.5 Ghz
3GB RAM
Nvidia 6150 SE nForce 430 128MB (Obvious bottleneck)
HP 17" Widescreen LCD 1440x900
320GB SATA HDD 7200rpm
250w PSU
What I plan to upgrade to is this:
Rosewill Wind Knight Gaming ATX Mid, 2x 120mm fans
Apevia 140mm fan for the top.
G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 800 bringing my computer from 3GB to 4GB, its max.
Rosewill RG530-2 530W PSU
This will be my first build, so please correct me if anything won't work properly. I picked out items that were within my budget, and had the highest ratings. I don't want or need an overkill system, so if anything seems excessive, please tell me.
I'm gonna use my current processor and HDD, and I only have one PCIe x16 slot available, so no SLI. Now I have two concerns. One the case, if I don't need to, I won't upgrade it. I've been looking everywhere for adding fans to this thing, or at least replacing the stock ones, but there is no info on 'em. I assume I will need to pull it apart and measure.
Number two, I am unsure about which video card to get. I hear a lot of talk about the new 200series Nvidia cards, but I was planning on getting a Nvidia 9800GT 1 GB EVGA. It doesn't make sense to me that the 260 or 275 series are only 896MB and cost an extra $100. Looking at the stats, it looks like the 9800GT is better. Like I said, I'm new to this whole thing, advice would be much appreciated.
I am pretty sure a 9800GT 1GB will run StarCraft II and DIII on max or close to it, and that's all I'm really concerned about. Other games I plan to play with this rig are Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, and C & C 4. It looks to me that it should run all of those no prob, except for maybe Mass Effect 2, but I don't need max settings for that.
Grand total comes to $288.95. I would like to keep it under $300.

How many fans does your current case have? Do you have issues with heat as is? Remember to create a flow of air, you ideally want both exhaust and intake fans. If you're a little bit crafty, you can easily mod old cases and put 80mm fans just about anywhere with a pair of tin snips and a drill. If you have big hands and are clumsy like me, it wont be pretty looking, but it is simple to add fans to places where there used to be sheet metal
Unless you have heat issues now, I probably wouldn't worry so much about the case. The only real thing you seem to be upgrading is the VC, which while it does generate significant heat, typically will have its own heatsink & fan. So if your case has even somewhat decent airflow you should be fine.
Hi Archie. I've taken the time to explain some things a little better for you.
-Replacing the integrated graphics in your pre-built HP will go a long LONG way in the performance department like you said.
-You cannot overclock the processor through the bios, and there aren't any pinmods to OC an am2 socket processor. So 2.5ghz is where it stays. You might try http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=189 if you are feeling avdventurous
-About the ram:
it is currently not in dual channel since there are only 2 physical ram slots on the motherboard (meaning a 2gb+1gb combination) and since I have no way of knowing if your motherboard vendor even fitted the oem motherboard with such capabilites (though retail bought nforce 430 motherboards are capable of this) means you would have to buy 2 new modules of ram. No need for that.
The benefit of dual channel is so minimal that you will have a very hard time spotting or feeling the difference.
The addition of 1 more gb of ram will make for a tiny performance boost in some games. Don'tbother with it.
And the difference between ram running at 800mhz and 667mhz is practically nonexistant.
Not to mention that replacing the ram might bring to stability issues (e.g. computer not turning on ^_^) because of oem compatibility. Such are factory built computers.
So take my advice and leave the ram alone.
-Your case is fine, no need to add fans or a better cpu cooler either- you can't overclock, so your system will not heat up. More fans add noise as well. Besides -you have one exhaust fan already installed.
-Your power supply is a basic run of the mill metal box.
After a bit of searching I have found that it does not have a PCI-express connector.
While 250w is most likely the peak wattage, it will run a graphics card like the 9800gt if you get a 4-pin to 6-pin connector http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812887001 (3$).
NOTE: Most graphics cards already come with such a PCI-express adapter. I put the link there so that you have a basic idea of what to do or what to buy if the adapter does not come bundled with the graphics card you buy.
OK, this is what you need:
(or what I thought you needed, just scroll down a little bit, you'll see what I mean) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102824 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008
Both power supply (added it because of future upgradeability) and graphics card are free shipping coming to a total sum of 125 $ . Both items are price/performance kings that shit on everything else in their price segment. Both are on a limited time offer.
The graphics card would brake those games in half, and a more powerfull one will be bottlenecked by your processor.
Download Rivatuner http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner and overclock the shiz out of your card. You'll most likely gain 15-20% boost in performance. That card overclocks like crazy.
Summary:
Keep the RAM, the POWER SUPPLY and the CASE
BUY THE 9600GSO
300$ ? Hahahaha

Misread the graphics card information. Duh it said system minimum requirements not graphics card. I meet the power supply standards by lots. I'm also planning to get 4 x 2gb DDR2 1066 modules for my mobo. I will replace the 4gbs I have right now(2gb isn't even mine lol :D).
1 question I don't know if this will be worth it or not or even if it will work. If I had 8gb of DDR2 1066 and 4gb of DDR3 1333 would it be worth it?. My Motherboard is a Asus P5KC and holds 12gb maximum and has 6 ram slots (4 DDR2 1066 max and 2 DDR3 1333 max).
I have also checked if my PSU handles this and yes. Even with 50% aging and 100% peak load I still have 100W to spare
Wow, thanks a ton. That helps a lot. I read that the 9600 GSO needs a 400w PSU. I didn't think that my little baby 250 was going to be enough? I figure if its fine, I'll just run that for a while until its time for me to upgrade to something else in a year or two. For that price, its basically impossible to beat. I'm gonna get that card right now if it doesn't take any more power. If not, maybe I'll just buy a 400w psu, and be done with it.
If you want a great deal. On newegg thers a 950W psu for 100$ :D. Nah you don't need that much but I'd say upgrade to 500-600W. I know they hype the system requirements up but I wouldn't take a chance with that big of a jump.
I'm also planning to get 4 x 2gb DDR2 1066 modules for my mobo. I will replace the 4gbs I have right now(2gb isn't even mine lol :D).
First queston is: do you really need all that memory? If you really do "3d design, need vast amounts of computational power etc and memory storage" then get 8gb of ram. If all you do is game then NO you don't need friggin 8gb of ram.[/quote]

LOL dude. You have six ram slots because besides the standard 4 slots (like the P5K that are compatible with ddr2 memory, only vendor that produces them with ddr3 by default on those intel boards are intel themselves) that come with P35 chipset motherboards, you have an extra 2 slots INCOMPATIBLE (both physically and electrically) with ddr2 that are there in case you already have ddr3 memory that you might want to use. You cannot mix and match them
If all your ddr2 memory slots are already filled, then it would be silly to buy anew.
I told you that you should wait for the next gen graphics cards coming soon, but it's your cash

I don't pure game. I do lots of 3d design. The fact of the matter is also I really only have 2gb I am just borrowing 2gb extra to do some testing. So technically speaking I still have 2 slots left open for DDR2, while my DDR3 slots just collect dust and rot :).
About the next gen cards. That will just run my wallet for more money. New gen will need more Power which means new PSU. When the new gen come out it will probably be time to get Windows 7 which is a huge chunk of cash. Not to mention the new gen will be hugely expensive probably.
