Hey all. I was just wondering if any of you guys have ever taken guitar lessons. I'm trying to learn guitar and I'm not sure if I should teach myself or take lessons? you guys have any input/ idea of which one I should do?
Thanks
Teach yourself. In the end you will thank me for it

Teach yourself. I took lessons and it was worthless. For me, guitar was only fun when I played stuff that I wanted to play. You don't get that with lessons. Start off by learning how to read tabs then go from there.
Teach yourself, you can find pretty much everything you need to know online. I taught myself a few years back, and if I hadn't quit I'd probably be quite the soloist by now.
To start off, learn by yourself how to read tabs. After you have done that, do some easy songs that you know by following tabs. Watching some "how to play so and so" on youtube wouldnt hurt either.

What? Why's everyone saying that? Having a teacher has many advantages. He can monitor your progress, help in those little things that books don't teach, and is a great motivator. You can always tell him what song you want to learn.

Why wouldn't one take lessons if they could? Sure you can teach yourself shit, but unless you're some musical prodigy you're not gonna get very far. And even prodigies need a teacher to guide them.

You can take lessons, but most instructors out there only teach you chords and arpeggio's (I think that is how you spell it lol) Most of that stuff you can learn right from the internet

I have been playing for 6 years and probably after my 3rd year of teaching myself, i checked out an instructor at the local guitar center and the highest difficulty he knew was the am arpeggio. But i dont know, it is only a suggestion to teach yourself and save the money for better gear.

I guess it depends on how seriously you take all of it. I don't mean to keep speaking vicariously through my brother, but he took lessons very seriously. But he figured he would start out taking lessons first, then he could decide on his own when he was ready to go his own way and build on himself what he had already learned. And then one day he invested in a PRS guitar that he still uses today.
I understand what you're saying to a point though. If one is not sure about the guitar or whether they want to be a full time musician, then it probably would be best to teach yourself whatever you can first.
I have recently found a website which could help you, it has videos and all. I haven't had the time to actually have a look through the videos though, as I am a bit over my internet limit. But hoping to check it out any time soon.

I've been into guitar on and off for about 2 years. I know basic chords and stuff but thats about it
Got a friend who taught himself to play guitar, and he's fucking incredible now.
He used youtube videos mostly, and online guitar manuals and such.
Of course, I'm talking about individual lessons.
Anyways, you don't need lessons, just watch this
By the way, a nice clip of a guitar lesson right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewaLg1fMPkQ
