I had one for most of my youth. They are amazing animals. They are very loyal. They don't usually need TOO much attention but they are loving. Very smart and well behaved if trained properly.
They love exercise. Give them lots!
When they get older they are very likely to get hip problems. Its something specific to German shepherds.

If inside you will need a crate, for a german shepherd a big one, to help with bathroom training and for him to have a safe spot where no one can bother him. It will be easier if someone is home with him the whole time but this isn't always possible. Watch him after he eats and drinks and when he starts sniffing around for a place to "go" lead him outside. Figure out a signal for him to let you know when he needs to "relieve" himself. I had mine scratch the door (put up plexi glass so they don't ruin the door).
I would start training him to sit, heel, come etc. early but only in short spurts, do a little here and there not for long periods of time. Stop and start up again later, if he does a good job then reward him with affection and occasionally a treat.
Have fun - puppies are awesome!!!
Don't forget the pics. hehehe

My dogs quite large (not as big or as hairy as a German Shepard though) but it sleeps inside and spends most of the day outside... depending on the day
Make sure you train him... extremely important otherwise you end up with an ignorant dog or an arrogant dog
I trained my dog a bit, but hes so arrogant that he just ignores you blatantly unless theres actually something in it for him, then all of sudden it just comes flooding back... funny how that works
Theres classes you can take him to for training, or books you can buy
Make sure the dog knows you are the master... If you wanna train him to do stuff, or obey your orders, you have to say things like "SIT" - look at him in the eyes - and point at him.... keep doing it and when he does what u tell him, reward him by stroking him or something, maybe even give him a bone... If he does a bad thing dont be soft on him, even if you have to spank him on the head or something, it helps...
yea, i was reading that hitting a dog never helps.. so i knew that was outta the question.. but.. this is gonna be a loong road.. to make him obey .. ima try and take him running tomorow morning.. hopefully he don't give me problems..
it's odd... hes all sad.. and quiet.. and when my little brothers dog gets near him.. he starts running around and playing.. but.. otherwise.. he wont wana even walk.

I always had bad experiences with dogs. When I was growing up I always remember the little ankle bitters that bark really fast and loud and are like bary assin gibs from the bary assin gibs talk show. They would run after me while I'd ride the ultra dorky bicycle hand me down from my two older sisters. Double dutch jump rope potatos, doble dutch, jump rope potatoes, double dutch, jump rope potatoes. Sorry, just had an ADD moment lol.
You don't have to hit a dog to assert yourself as the alpha male, although I think you can lightly (to the point where it wouldn't even make a red mark if he had no fur) and it wouldn't cause the dog any mental issues... but people tend to go way overboard and then the dog just gets afraid of them
Its like when dogs are interacting with eachother naturally and one whos higher in the chain gets pissed at the other one so he nips him, or just growls... Theres no beating to near death going on, or even drawing blood - Just enough of an action to actually get a point of "dont fucking do that" across
Another good way I heard though is just flip the dog over onto its back (without hurting it, because its still only young, this should be easy) and then assert yourself... with an angry voice and lots of pointing I suppose
You should only have to do this type of stuff a few times... ie, If you go near his food while he is eating and he growls at you, that is a good time to assert yourself as the alpha male
i was reading a bit and genisis, your right... ima try it today... but, do u guys know where i can read a how to: train a dog? cant seem to find a whole one lol

Really though, anything he doesn't like he's going to eventually associate that if he poos or pees in the house it's gonna happen.
You do want to get him used to people as much as possible though.
