They've said they've got the core game and mechanics working, and that now they need to focus on the content.
agreed
Who knows about the items in the game yet, I bet a majority of the time spend developing the game is the graphics and overall environment
That and the animations a programming of AI and all that account for a 50% of the game but that 90% of the time
The items, stats and skills take 10% of the time but make up 50% of the game
They have the other characters PLAYABLE at the office if you watched the Interviews and panels you would know.
The game is FAR ALONG according to the Dev's.
I haven't watched the interviews or panels to be honest, so I was basing that on what I knew. I don't agree on it being out by Christmas, but I will say perhaps it is further than 40%.

Do you think 40% is FAR ALONG?
People don't realize that Blizzard is very secretive and would not let us see anything because they need things to keep the hype going, they will release new information every month and release the game around Christmas THIS YEAR.
I am sure of this.
LOLZ That sir... is a bold statment
Though I hope to the burning hells that you are right =)

One always has to hope for a well polished game released on time, but if it takes longer oh well as long as its good.
Anyone know the time between beta's and releases? Or demos. I don't know how much that could help since fixing issues from the beta could take any amount of time based on the difficulty.
Christmas this year, would be amazing. A demo by Christmas would be just as good. Or any holiday or religious celebration in December.

It certainly has to be higher than 70%, the game engine is by far the hardest and longest stage in the development process. Making sure everything renders correctly is awfully difficult and as you can see from the gameplay trailer it looks real fine. Physics seems to be fully implemented as well.
Oh and just to add, it doesn't go without saying that all the attributes, items and other various concepts that need to be coded aren't time consuming. But from what i can see in the trailer it certainly looks like they have majority of the work completed.
Who on earth would think Diablo 3 is 96-100% finished? I would go for 35-45, and specifically say 40% myself, or circa. That's about when Blizzard announces all of its games, and that fact I know from my uncle's friend who's a technician in the technical support of Battle.net, sponsored of course by Blizzard.

It's not sponsored by Blizzard, it's OWNED by Blizzard.
And please tell me you didn't pull the " I know a friend of a friend who has an uncle who knows a friend who has a long lost relative who knows someone who works in a devision at blizzard that has nothing to do with game development!" card.
I need my D2 + LOD back gahhh!

like one of them said, it's all content/balancing from here
i also have to agree with hell-lord that developing the engine is the most difficult process
