I agree. I wouldn't mind the old skill tree only if lvl 1, 5,... lower skills can be used in hell difficulty. I did like it when they added the effects of investing in lower spells to get better and stronger higher spells. So I wouldn't mind the same thing but with the possibility of these lower skills the become usefull in higher difficulty.

Synergies made some skills really unbalanced.. rather have some usefull skills at low levels that you don't need to spend 20 points and then a lot of variety in the more powerfull spells. I rather have many improving abilities with 5 points than just blizzard with maxed synergies.

When they intorduced it, It changed the balance. Some skills became much more useful, some became less. I would say it was a nice refresh for a game that had been out for as long as it had at that point.
It sucks to an extent. As a sorc you need power so you level firebal to 20 only to realize that you should have left it at 1 and waited till you got the final skill in the tree, but guess what? You needed the fireball skill to get to where you are.
Overall I want to see how it looks before I make any decisions, but having random caps seems perfectly fine. Even though the gave us the ability to cap all skills at 20 in D2 is was completely unnecessary, teleport is a perfect example of why not all skills need a cap of 20.
Skill trees force people to learn skills gradually through out the game, its certainly a fun aspect.
Whatever Blizzard decides will be good either way. They are pretty successful.

I think it doesn't really matter witch system they pick for variation in char's. There will always be cookiecutter builds, and there will be a lot of those.
Here's how you can look at it : The more different cookie-cutter builds there are, the most balances the skills are.
As for the limits the skill Level, I could see 10 being the max for something like masteries. Think about it, you're an axe Barb, you max your axe mastery at 10. Then you have an extra 10 points to place.
Each side has its ups and downs. If you did stick with the original style of going to 20 skills, it does allow much more customization of the character, however as some people pointed out before, some skills are almost pointless to max out. I do like the 20 skill tree setup, but I believe blizzard will come up with a new system because as you can tell the diablo 1 and 2 skills are on an entirely different level of fuctionality, and I believe they will continue to change it.

This way we can have more variatios of builds.
