Hey there I'm here to ask should mod's be allowed to delete entire threads? Now there are some out there that think that Mod's should only be able to delete the non relavent (spelling anyone? lawl) posts, and i happen to agree with this. But I'd like to see what some of you think.. so if you feel up to it post a few thoughts down? But alas I'm off to bed so I'll post first chance i get 2morow..
P.S. but damn it i won't be home all weekend >.> damn lawl ;)

They shouldnt be allowed to delete threads. Its so queer when a mod comes in and closes a thread because its gone off topic. Who gives a damn? conversations go off topic all of the time. Everything is going to be fine mods, just relax.
well if there a thread that is made just to flame a member i understand that is should be closed.
but besides that, i dont get why they close them

Depends on the topic of the thread. If it is an advertisement, particularily of the "bot" nature, we should, and in 99% of case do, delete them. Occassionally one slips by us.
If someone flames the site specifically, or the Diablo series, again we will delete the thread, and in all likelihood ban the user as well.
If the thread servers no purpose, even beyond that of spam we will delete it. At least most spam has a point of view or oppinion, not necessarily a well thought out or coherent one, but an oppinion on something non the less.

I'll rarely delete an entire thread. I certainly wouldn't delete one just because it went off topic. I've closed threads for going off topic, but usually only if the off-topicness was a flame war. If it's not a flame war and I feel the thread deserves conversation regarding the topic (maybe some important news, or a political debate) then I'll usually just warn people first to get back on topic.
If I delete a spam thread, it's because the last thing the forum needs is another spam thread. Besides the Official Spam Thread, I feel even spam should have some relative purpose.
Honestly, you guys have it so easy here. So tell it to my heart's vagina.
As you know, I usually don't trust cops. I also usually don't trust those in power. However, on average, I think that the mods have done a fairly decent job. One thing I would like though is for a "Trash" section where deleted threads go. That way we can make sure that none of the mods get corrupted, as power often does to people.
Other then that, I think that things are fine (For now...).
I know nothing about mods but i belive that someone should have the power to delete whole threads. When we are in need of deleting one or if a thread is found inconvenient for anyone or anything, it should be deleted. And as we cannot do it. I think mods should have this power.

Inconvenient? Inconvenient to who? Who decides what is or isn't inconvenient? Condoms are inconvenient to Catholics, should we ban those? Truth is inconvenient to Lawyers, should we ban that? The Second Amendment is inconvenient to robbers and lawyers and criminals and outlaws, should we ban that?
Deleting a thread because of its precieved inconvenience is foolhardy at best, ignorance and stupidity at worst. The idea of "Inconvenience" is too broad a term and can be too loosely defined. You need a base that moderators, supermoderators, and administrators have to follow or the forum will turn into anarchy and it will die.
Other than that matter. I always thought why i didn't have the power of deleting a thread made by me myself.

I agree with that. We made it. If nobody but us viewed it then we should be allowed to delete it, and we should be allowed to close our own threads and (if we closed it) open them back up as well.
Though I don't think we should be able to open it if a mod closed it.

Exactly. and you're right on the mod thing. We should not be able to reverse any action done by a mod. [other than some if they come up]

There should also be an appeal process should the need arise too. However I'm not sure how to keep it from being abused...
Well good morning nice to see a steady debate going ;)..
I must say that i agree here as well as i agree with the fact that we should have the power to close our own threads.
First off an appeal or veto power should be put in so that if we have an overwhelming amount of people that want a certain thread reopened then it can happen.
Second the power to close our own threads would most likely save you Mods some time, plus isn't it usually the maker of the thread that decides to close the thread in a post saying "Please close this thread".
Ok im done now ;).. just a few of my thoughts ;).. I'm off to school now so go ahead and post and i shall reply as soon as i can ;)

I disagree. I was meaning that if your thread is closed by a mod or your banned or something of that nature you should be able to appeal to have your case looked over by another moderator.
Though I am not sure how you could keep this from being abused...

Well even if you filed an appeal lets say, there is a very very slim chance that you will be seen by any one / accepted to come back or have your thread reopened.. thats why i said if there was a petition or something of that sort then we could have a sort of democracy on here and take a vote on who wants/thinks the thread should be reopened.. the vote could purely be that of the Mod's but still it would atleast give the people a chance of having certain threads that they want reopened, to get reopened..
Alright i must leave now.. i shall return later!!

That's why you have to have unbias moderators. (And I am not completely sure all of our moderators are unbias, but I will not name names as I do not want to be banned!)

Yeh, fbi uses at un-neccesary times... mainly when things aren't funny. At all.

I have thought over this for a bit, and I have come to realize that off-topic will rarely or hardly go back on topic, and if someone brings the convo back on-topic, someone will take it off-topic again with the other discussion. And usually this happens fast. So I don't see much of a point to even start threads...
But, I still think, allow off-topic for a bit but if it doesn't get back on topic in 1-2 pages (depends how big the entire thread is, like 6 pages (1 page) compared to 40 (2 pages)) then If it doesn't get back on-topic after you give a warning in the thread, delete the off-topic parts and if they still continue on with off-topic give them a warning themselves.

Member X opens a thread. Discussion proceeds. Member X gets mad for people not sharing his views. Member X closes his own thread. Member Y, Z and Å think that's stupid, and create new threads. Everyone gets confused and the original thread is lost althogh it shouldn't have been.
The reason (at leats in my mind, I didn't come up with the concept of forums, vBulletin or diablo3.com) for users not managing their own threads, is because of judgment and bias. If a thread pops up, then it is to be shared with the community, and the moderator's work is to make sure that the thread benefits the community. Now the "benefit" part is what people argue about and what causes controversy here, but in a sense that's what it's for.
I imagine there are also some technical issues. First of all post counts getting screwed up, which vBulletin is pretty much based off of, and I don't think reputation stays if the post reputation was awarded for is deleted. Though I am unsure if that's correct.

Hate me for this, but that's exacly why we have moderators. Because members shouldn't rule themselves at all times.
Though what do you mean by "overwhelming"? 50%? 100% 5 people?

Which you sort of can. If you are banned, you can always mail another mod about it (if you know who banned you to begin with that is).
