well a gate of oblivion does somwat resemble the swollen red vag that Martha has probably attained over the years, but grandpappy is still a dumb bastard
The ending left it in the air sorta speak. they could end it that way can also bring them back many ways. as the old saying goes Evil never dies.
1. They could have Tyreal turn evil and unleash baal meph diablo. would have to spin the storyline a bit. like when he threw his sword into the worldstone. Then remove'd it the prime evil's essence engluf'd him or the temptation of evil. this would be an excellent storyline for paladins specificaly allow them to choose to side with tyreal's vision of good. or the other vision. if they did that they would have to let the other class's choose as well at some point. Which with a little storyline spinning such as if they join'd tyreal's side they are promise'd certain new powers. By doing that you allow for new spells etc to be add'd to the game. for those on the other side of good which i'll use deckard cain as the head good guy for sake of argument he gives them new powers etc as well. then can have the ultimate battle of good vs evil as pvp. IF they really wanted to steal an idea they can take the mmorpg Daoc's rvr system for pvp. when you kill someone you get points you can put to pvp skills. spells attacks etc. i dont think blizz would ever do something along the lines of this as much as they should, because they would basically be making a new game out of d3.

~Your Mind is a place of its own it can make a hell of heaven, or a heaven of hell.~
for those who havnt seen it before here it goes...
Tyrael was peirced by a worldstone shard and baals wanderig soul entered tyraels body via the shard using it as a sort of makeshift soulstone thus creating an evil with all the powers of heaven.
Baal with all his new power decides to ressurect his two soulstone-smashed brothers back to life as zombies under his control thus the zombie-like Diablo on the alleged diablo 3 box cover
Baal is attacked by hadriel and several other angels when he visits diablo's resting place in hopes to zombifie him but Baal escaped and still managed to manipulate his brothers corpse.
Baal and Diablo proceed to attack travincal while the new council, some strong mages, and a few angels await. Baal with his new powers and zombie brother smashed the holy defence and ressurected Mephisto.
Meanwhile in Hell: Belial and Azmodan grow impatient and take control of hell in the prime evils' absence and start infusing the demons with the defiled shards of the worldstone giving them a boost in growth, power, and demonic aura.
Belial betrays Azmodan and dispatches him with one blow. Belial consumes Azmodans soul with help from a corrupt Horadrim. He becomes a true force to be reconed with.
Baal returns to see his former demons under belials reign outside the seventh gate of hell... The stage is set...
I like that. Except for the corrupt Tyrael part. Though of course if you removed it, the rest of the story would be impossible.
But I really believe that the destruction of the Worldstone is to make demons a bigger (if that is possible) part of a sequel. Possibly angels too, if the Worldstone barrier is set to prevent them from entering too.

I believe if that is true, more angels will come to our plain to fight on the side of light. Every one has a choise and that has always determined the outcome of any conflict. Angels will see humans being slaughtered and will disobey all rules for salvation.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
Yes, that seems the most logical reasoning. However, it doesn't agree with what we've seen from Heaven so far.
Both sides know that Sanctuary is the key to victory. And while the demons have consistently been active in teh world, the angels have drawn themselves back. Why is that? Without humans, Heaven will fall, so they must be willing to put in as much effort as possible. Yet they don't.
Hopefully D3 will answer this question.

It is against the rules for angels to interfere with the humans and the mortal plain. I fear though that the war between heaven and hell will draw out its conclusion in Diablo III. Angels will fall from the Heavens and Demons will spawn from pits of hell, and they will end the war on the mortal plain.

Against the rules? Why should they establish a rule that prevents them from acquiring the key to victory? If that is the case, then congrats Hell, you were smarter and you won.

Angels in the diablo lore, are supposedly forbidden from interfering directly with the lives of Man, yet tyrael has done this on many occasions, hence why i think rather than become corrupt, tyrael is banished from heaven.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

And what happens when someone do tries to do something? He gets called a rogue, is deemed corrupted by his allies, and is foretold to be cast out of Heaven. Way to go all you would-be good guys.

Well, I bet you will see more angels and demon lords walking the earth in D3. Since the destruction of the World Stone more is at stake then 3 prime evils. All of hell will be at the door step of man kind. Salvation is needed.

"Hey guys, we have this race here against hell, and the only way to win is to run the fastest. So let's shoot ourselves in the foot."
That is exacly what they are doing if Sanctuary is the key to victory.
