Here's numbers we know for sure: That about 6.5 million copies of Diablo III were activated in the first week; that the average player has 3 characters, and that 1.9% of all characters have reached Inferno mode. Thus: 6,500,000 x 3 x 0.019 = 370,500 *players* have at least 1 character that has reached Inferno mode. Which is 5.7% of the player base.
Is it possible that this number could be higher or lower; yes, to SOME degree, but definitely not to the extent that some here are hoping it is (the 20%+ people in particular). Also, it was touched on earlier a bit, but it can actually be FEWER players than expected if a single player has multiple characters in Inferno (though admittedly unlikely). For example, Joe, could have 10 characters in Inferno, but be the only PLAYER at the difficulty.
I also hope they dont nerf inferno as much as tweak some character skills. If by the above posters stats, roughly 5% of people are in Inferno, thats about right imo. Inferno should be for the top 5% of all the players with everybody else working towards it if they desire. They just need to buff a some skills a bit so each class can better handle the difficulty. I will be severly disapointed if any nerfs to inferno allow any more than 5-6% of the playerbase to progress in it within a couple months of the patch.
Only thing I want to address is the legendary part. In wow I have my rogue legendary, Best in Slot.. Why? Cause its LEGENDARY. So if they aren't meant to be the best, then why give them a name that indicates they are. Deceive much?
For everyone talking about the inferno %, you do realize they sold over 6.5 million copies.. 1% of that is 65,000. That's a lot. I am in inferno and on the way there 90% of public games I joined were people not even close to gear to beat hell. I had to join, leave, join leave. I think 1.9% is about right.
Only thing I want to address is the legendary part. In wow I have my rogue legendary, Best in Slot.. Why? Cause its LEGENDARY. So if they aren't meant to be the best, then why give them a name that indicates they are. Deceive much?
How many of those are BiS right now? At one point in time they were, just like every legendary in D3. Naturally as you level up, they will no longer be the best.

Diablo's Legendaries are different in that they have an Unique name and appearance. They also have more Affixes. The "issue" is that the affixes are just as random as the Blues and Rares thus allowing for "crap" Legendaries.
What people want is at least a bit more stability as it were, in their Legendary items. It doesn't necc be best in slot, but it would be nice if it isn't being easily upstaged (though a level 40 Legendary SHOULD be outdone by a Level 60 Blue; I don't understand the people that don't get that; for example, my level 43 Wizard was checking out a Level 40 Legendary chest piece (Azurbel's Robes or some such), and I would not only hope, but expect, that when I hit higher levels, that better blue and yellow items should be dropping for me.
Changes sound good. Game is really fun, but it'll end after Hell for me. I hope they don't nerf Inferno too much. It's really annoying to see people throw out the "pre-nerf" announcement and there should be a difficulty that not everyone can complete. That's what drives people to improve.
Tell that to Barbs where everyone is forced into 1h/shield. There's no point in going 2h or dual wielding because you'll be insta-gibbed. They're all using pretty much the exact same skills because of it; compare that to D2 where you had at the very least 4 builds that were viable in Hell.
Can't disagree here. I quit by Barb beginning of Hell cuz I was corpse walking all the time. The WD never had a problem in Hell (except Belial, I cannot do that boss very well).
Changes sound good. Game is really fun, but it'll end after Hell for me.
If you think that inferno sounds hard; just give it a try. Really. Yeah, you can get some nasty elite combos, but you can always put them in a corner somewhere and ignore them. That's part of how inferno progression works, I'm sure.
But, really. Once you take down a few groups of elites with 4 affixes...go back to hell and do some 3 affix ones. It's a joke. It's funny how quickly you become accustomed to the kiting and craziness of a 4 affix group.
Anyone else in inferno looting the blacksmith recipes? I've taught my BS 3 and have 3 'already known' in my stash.. anyone else with this problem? my friend also has found a duplicate recipe.. fyi I'm farming Act 1 & Act 3 inferno on different characters. Glad they're reducing the cost of the BS.. they didn't say by how much but 97K just for a 4 property wpn that may or may not roll with damage mods (if it doesn't [roll well] it doesn't sell at all) and you could find better blues for free*
*YMMV on RNG
I was surprised at the 3 characters number that's how many I've got at 60
good to see the majority of my issues with the game is being looked at, especially inferno spikiness and blacksmith.
though I am disappointed, considering previous blizzard standard, that so much which were obvious and should have been taken cared of before release are being fixed post release.
1.9% of characters have unlocked Inferno difficulty
WTF!!
Furthermore, it's a percentage of characters and not players. Since they also said that players have 3 characters on average, this means closer to 6% have reached inferno, and they probably wrote this before the weekend.
1.9% of characters have unlocked Inferno difficulty
Which means that approx. 5% of all players are in Inferno. That's several 100k players right there and is a lot more than WOW hardcore raiders at any rate. And this is 2 weeks after the release, so every day more players unlock Inferno, so I don't think the numbers even help their arguments.
This assumes that every character in Inferno represents 1 unique player. I know for a fact this is not true as I know at least two people who have unlocked Inferno on 2 characters.
For all I know they could be the only ones, but I doubt that, but that's just anecdotal evidence so it shouldn't be relied on. Regardless, people jumping immediately to 5.7% of all players are on Inferno are assuming too much. Those saying "mathematically this is the maximum possible" are providing helfpul math, don't then add a bunch of unwarranted assumptions in.
And to touch on a different point, Simca is right, if you're in Inferno you're not representative of the general gaming community, you're a statistical outlier. Mind you, that subset does matter, but so does the whole game.
Still going to never use the BS when the AH will always give you more bang for your buck. If they make crafting a LOT cheaper, the items will get a LOT cheaper on the AH...the BS will never win.
The Jeweler changes are welcome, but gems themselves are very boring...I wish they would give us more opportunity to diversify on Armor and Weapon sockets.
Hopefully after the Legendary buff low roll ilvl 60 Legendaries will still be better than perfect roll ilvl63 Magic items. Legendaries are so rare that even a crap roll (crap in this case meaning stats you can actually use but rolled in the lower range) should outshine any blue only a few levels away.
So again, why are the statistics for Inferno unlock per account not shown, but per character instead?
40% might be a bit high, indeed, but it's definitely FAR more than 1.9%
Maybe because there are people with multiple characters in Inferno? It's been long enough now for some of the more serious players to grind out 2 or 3 60s. Either way they have access to the data and we don't. Really hard to be sure. I'm 100% positive they know the exact amount of accounts that are in inferno. Just not sure why they didn't share it.
These changes aren't going to make this game worthy of playing continuously for me right now. They have to be far more drastic and stick to the way Diablo was intended to STAY.

That's why I wrote approx. 5% and not 5.7%, and I don't see how that is an "unwarranted assumption".
You don't see how posting numbers with zero to back them up is an "unwarranted assumption"? How could you not?
I don't like his statistics. I guess there are many people like me who have created a character of each class but are primarily playing one of them, therefore, I have one character in Inferno and 4 in Normal. Would have been more interesting to know how many accounts have reached Inferno.
At least they are changing Inferno. It is nothing but tiring and frustrating at the moment. A really, really unsatisfying gaming experience.
Why in such a hurry? If you want to be first with something you can't complain, because you're most likely not going to be playing the game the way it's meant to be played. Go farm the previous act/easy packs/minibosses in the act you're in and you're all set. Look at Kungen, he's doing perfectly fine in act1 inferno on his HC barb, farming gear and surviving like a boss. Can't wait to see him try act2.
Look at me guys I've been playing Diablo before you guys were born. That means I'm superior compared to "WoW kiddies" so you can all fuck off. I'm a big guy on the internet now, am I not?
1.) It's great that they are planning to address the itemization issues. One of the largest concerns within the community.
2.) Nerfing the Blacksmith was needed. I don't know why they changed it during the beta as it was fine the way it was. It's just stupid to put 10 pages and 8k gold (Not sure if exact just saying for arguments sake) into an Axe that gives me Intelligence. Was just a stupid waste of gold and would cost 60k to get a decently itemized piece of gear. Could go to the auction house and spend 20k and get geared to the teeth. Again another concern the community has about the game, while not as big cause of the Auction House.
And really people? You guys are going to argue about how many people are in Inferno? I have 26 people on Real ID and 3 of them are in inferno. I think Blizzards statistics are accurate. Not everybody has played the game every hour of every day.
I also know many people from all different backgrounds who are playing right now, some who were hardcore D2 guys that are loving D3, and a few of them that have already stopped playing. Also know a few WoW people who both love the game and have stopped playing. Not everyone who bought the game is going to fall in love with it regardless of their background.
Problem with games now is that people instead of looking to go have fun with it and see what is has to offer, they try to find everything wrong with it and rip it apart and give it no chance. They won't compare pros and cons and see if X con really outweighs Y pro and vise versa. I think a lot of people wanted D3 to be carbon copy of D2 and the problem is the gap between releases, not who's making it. You can argue Blizzard north vs Blizzard Activision all day if you want, but what your failing to look at is 2000 vs 2012.
Anyways, just wanted to add that the biggest problem with this game in my opinion is the Auction House. It should just be removed.
Yeah, what's up with the constant arguing about how many people are in inferno? Who fucking cares?! I've played 4 chars, 1 of which has made it to inferno. Half of the people on my friendlist is on or below nightmare, the rest on inferno. That's with 1 char also.
People these days have attention spans of 5 year old kids and it can't really be helped. Back in the day D2 was THE SHIT because it had some diversity and there was nothing on the market for years that could compete with it, the same went for other games as well. With so many games out today there are only so many you can actually fall for and keep playing for a longer period of time. That's the way it is and will be for a long, long time.
These changes aren't going to make this game worthy of playing continuously for me right now. They have to be far more drastic and stick to the way Diablo was intended to STAY.
Cookie-cutter builds and bots leading baalruns for all eternity? Awesome game...
Just to be that guy, and to also post 3 times in a row:
Why call sub-par items legendary instead of uniques? A change I really didn't see as necessary at all. It's a picky detail, but it adds more to the argument that D3 is WoWified (obviously since a large portion of the team worked on WoW).
If you have played WoW, hearing Legendary means it's something really good and hard to retrieve. It may have some flavour-text, but so can unique itmes have.
Unique doesn't sound as glorified as Legendary. It's one-of-a-kind or not at all many of them. It carries the spirit of the legacy games with it and doesn't have to be supreme-OP, such as the case with Legendary items.
Thoughts?

There is plenty of build diversity, you just lack the creativity and imagination to come up with any.
