One crisp autumn evening near the marshes of Tristram a family sat in their wood and straw hut,
huddled around their fire place.
"Now finish up your soup dear, it's time to go to sleep".
"But mother, I'm not sleepy yet. Can't I stay up just a bit long?"
"I won't ask again!" replied the mother, her eyes glowing softly from the nearby flame and cauldron.
As the young girl climbed into bed, her mother sat down beside her.
"You will learn to listen to your elders, just as my mother taught me before I became a witch.
Now for a bed time story...
In the evening one hears the calls of the night.
As I crept closer, he felt my presence.
His sounds periodically starting and stopping.
I went to the toad that lies under the sage brush.
I charmed him out, and he came at my call.
I go out and play shepherd, but my flock is toads."
As the old woman finished, she kissed her daughter on the forehead, "Good night my dear, Leah."
The next day...
"C'mon dear wake up, we must head down to the waters edge and gather some mushrooms."
Leah's eyes quickly opened with excitement, as she always loved time to play at the swamp and chase
frogs while her mother searched for plants.
There was a slight fog that morning as they left the safety of their hut, perfect humidity for
large shrooms to have grown in the night.
As her mother gathered different fungae, Leah started walking down the shore line, looking for
anything to try and catch. As she approached a wet, mossy log half way out of the water she noticed
a small salamander sitting near the water line, very well camouflaged against the bark of the tree.
She crept very low as she approached. Her eyes looked like an owls, about to snatch its prey.
With all her might she lept forward.
Kurslasph!
"Aww damnit, I missed."
She continued down the shoreline, with her mother now out of sight.
RRRIBIT.
Where is that coming from? she thought.
RRRIBIT..
Hmm, where is that lil' bugger? she said to her self as she glanced at the nearby shrubs.
As Leah approached a patch of reeds she spotted something.
"Oh my it's beautiful" she said under her breath.
Small rays of sunshine started peeking through the fog, lighting up vibrant yellow spots and drops of
dew on the orange frogs back.
As she approached the frog sat there calmly looking directly at her serene and gentle eyes,
mesmerized as a man to a siren's song. She picked him up and said softly, "I will call you...Binkles."

Also, keep in mind that just because you may write a book does not mean you'll win. More words is more labor, but that doesn't mean more heart or whit or creative word choice or originality. Character count does not entitle anyone to anything.

Too few in the land of Sanctuary know the tragic tale of Binkles the Frog. As a young tadpole of the Toxic Frog species primitive to the jungles of Kejihstan and located many miles northeast of the town of Kurast, Binkles was often pushed around and alienated from his siblings and other fellow froglings due to an unfortunate birth defect in which he was born without poison glands. His own mother, although protective of her offspring, always had a deep-down feeling of regret any time she would look upon her child. Binkles' father, once a proud leader of the local Toxic Frog habitat in his younger days , would remind his son on a constant basis how much shame and mockery he brought the family, declaring him an "abomination" whenever others would bring him up in conversation.
Finally, after enduring such a hard childhood of being treated so poorly, Binkles had enough and decided to run away from his home. He had travelled far and dodged many dangers and mishaps, and narrowly managed to escape the hungering glare of nearby creatures, demons or undead roaming the area. He reached the ruined, possibly abandoned city of Travincal and met a young Witch Doctor apprentice travelling the lands in search of knowledge and powerful artifacts to help in a rumored return of the armies of the Burning Hells. The Witch Doctor in-training introduced himself as Uga'boo'ga, and after the two had introduced each other properly, the young apprentice offered the young Binkles the opportunity to join him on his journey to aid the forces of Sanctuary in the coming invasion.
Binkles was overjoyed. For once in his life, he found a true friend. Someone who looked past his disability. Unfortunately, this joy would not last for long.
Uga'boo'ga and Binkles travelled along the land, fighting (truthfully, Binkles perched himself on his friend's shoulders during battles) various dangerous creatures and minions of the damned. Eventually, the apprentice learned new abilities and developped new combat strategies. One of his favorites was to employ a Plague of Poisonous Toads to accost his enemies and give them a slow, agonizing death thanks to the potent poisons his toads had at their disposal. Uga'boo'ga became too fond of using this particular ability and used it more often than the others in his arsenal. After a battle with a tiny but vicious tribe of Fetishes and Shamans that ambushed their campsite as they slept, Uga'boo'ga had left his summoned toads to linger. He had forgotten he hadn't dismissed their services yet, and moments later collapsed from exhaustion and the shock of being taken by surprise in the dark of the night. Binkles, still perched atop his companion, fell with him.
As the dust cleared, Binkles lay aside his unconscious partner. It was then he realized he was alone with the three poison toads. Not recognizing him as an ally, they immediately charged the hapless and defenseless frog and brutally and unforgivingly beat him to within an inch of his life. As he lay dying, the most he could manage was a faint "croak" as his breathing became shallower and shallower. Uga'boo'ga finally regained consciousness moments later and witnessed his new close friend lying broken and beaten a few inches away from him. It was then he also heard the sound of reinforcement Fetishes and Shamans on approach. Knowing he wouldn't have time to dismiss his toads and save Binkles at the same time, he reached deep into his satchel and pulled out his last Rejuvination Potion. Quickly covering up his friend with fallen leaves and uncorking the potion and emptying the contents near Binkles' mouth, he fled taking his toads with him, hoping to draw them away from Binkles so he might escape safely.
Binkles quickly lapped up the potion contents before they dried into the jungle floor. A sudden wave of energy washed through him and he felt sure he'd been saved from the cold embrace of death. A suddenly death-moan sounded out a few yards away in the direction the Witch Doctor fled. Binkles listened intently for a few moments more, and after hearing no more but the fading sound of departing Fetishes and Shamans, he knew that he was alone once again. Not knowing what to do, or where to go, Binkles the Frog pointed himself in one direction and started moving.
The current whereabouts of Binkles the Frog is unknown. But should any traveller come upon him along their journey, it would probably mean the world to the little guy if you gave him a pat on the head or even a hug. Disclaimer: Not to be held responsible for players contracting warts from contact with a frog
Tristam, two months before the fall of King Leoric
"Stay while and listen," the old man croaked hearing a rustle behind him. He turned, surprised to find not the hero he was expecting but a simple frog. He eyed the small creature curiously then continued on with his story about the unthinkable evils that were looming ahead as if the frog could understand him.
Across the town Griswold watched. "Better the frog than me." he muttered with a shrug. Happy to be free of the Elders endless stories about the end of the world.
And from that day on Binkles the Frog was heralded a hero of Tristam, for he saved the towns people from a greatest evil they had ever known, an old man that would never shut up.
Binkles wasn't always a frog; he came from a different origin…
With the aftermath of the battle between Anu and Tathamet, the High Heavens and the Burning Hells were created. The crystal eye of Anu became the Worldstone, but what is not told of, is the scale of Tathamet which became a creature with the ability to shape shift. This creature attached itself to the Worldstone and remained dormant for many years.
When Inarius and Lilith stole the Worldstone and created Sanctuary, the creature came out of hiding and took the form of the human. This creature was a very conniving evil thing, and tried to earn the trust of all he came in contact with, just so he could crush that trust with some form of mischief. The people of Sanctuary nicknamed him Binkles, because of his gracious attitude in doing small favors to earn the trust of others.
When King Leoric came to Sanctuary, Binkles tried very desperately to get in good with him. King Leoric allowed Binkles to be his butler. Binkles then subtly persuaded King Leoric to invade the Cathedral. Binkles knew that he could draw the evil of the Burning Hells from there, and had King Leoric doing his dirty work.
Adria the witch caught on to Binkles' plan and hexed him. Binkles, now a harmless frog, could now do nothing to assist in the efforts in the Cathedral. Binkles was now cursed with having to watch as all of his plans were thwarted by the heroes of Sanctuary.
As of today, Binkles still roams the world of Sanctuary waiting for his curse to be lifted so that he can once again bring forth the evils of the Burning Hells.
Back before the corruption of the Cathedral, there was a pet shop dealer that lived out of a carriage next to the Cathedral. The man was friendly with the townsfolk and was quite fond of the young boy in town, Wirt. The pet dealer was not able to make much of a living there, as there was nobody really willing to buy his pets.
The pet dealer decided to move closer to Caldium, where there was more of a populace. As he started to pack his things for the long haul to Caldium, Wirt stopped by. Wirt was confused and asked why he had to leave, the pet dealer told Wirt that the business was not doing so well, and he needed more people around to buy things. As the pet dealer was packing up, he came across his most prized possession, his frog. As a token of remembrance, the pet dealer gave the frog to Wirt and asked him to take special care of him. Wirt agreed, and with a heavy heart wished the pet dealer well.
Wirt cared deeply for his frog. He decided to name his frog, but struggled with a name. The frog seemed very fond of binkies, and so Wirt named him Binkles. Binkles the frog remained Wirt's pet until his ultimate demise. Binkles still remains in Sanctuary today, waiting for a new owner.
Many years ago Binkles the Frog was once known as a sorcerer named Barnham the Great. When he was just a boy, Barnham lived on the streets and often got himself into trouble, using his uncontrolled magic to trick and strike fear in others, in order to steal food and clothing. Yet he also used it to defend those who were in need or in danger. Sorcerers noticed his potential for greatness or destruction when he would sometimes show small signs of great power. He was eventually taken in by a powerful wizard named Albius Priscus to live in the city of Kingsport. Albius also felt Barnham's black potential, but Albius was a wise man, and taught Barnham how to control his magic and his emotions, using the Vizjerei mage clan's strict code of discipline.
After hearing rumors of destruction by a mysterious man, known as The Wanderer, Barnham decided to journey toward the East, in search of the Wanderer, to bring peace back to the world of Sanctuary. While traveling through the Twin Seas toward Kurast he met an amazon named Priscilla who, though she was young, had become worn with battle. After fighting many demons and other hell spawn creatures throughout Sanctuary, Barnham found a sense of solace in being with Priscilla.
When Barnham and Priscilla arrived in Kurast, they found it battered and constantly under attack. Among the many battles, and the destruction and despair, Barnham and Priscilla grew powerful and inseparable, using their combinations of techniques to take down hordes of evil beings. While in the city of Travincal, Priscilla was gravely injured by the demon Council Member, Bartuc the Bloody. Barnham became crazed and launched his magic power at Bartuc and his followers. Bartuc was badly injured himself, but managed to escape while Barnham worried about rescuing his Priscilla.
After the battle at Tristram, Barnham took Priscilla to the city of Caldeum to recover. It was there that Barnham discovered that he had fallen in love with Priscilla. Exhausted with battle, they decided to live in Caldeum, and over the years, Barnham's influence over the Brotherhood of the Vizjerei, which is primarily located in the city, became great.
When the Emperor Hakan became ill, there grew a dissension between mage clans over their influence over the city of Caldeum that, for some, grew into a small war. Since Barnham was one of the most influential men of the Vizjerei at the time, one rebellious, yet powerful member of the Yshari snuck into Barnham's home and attacked Priscilla, mortally wounding her. Though caught off guard, she managed to kill the intruder. But the damage was done. Priscilla could not recover from her injuries.
When he discovered the death of his wife, Barnham became uncontrollably enraged and attacked the Yshari clan, with all of his power, with heartless conviction, unconcerned with the lives of anyone who might stand in his way. When the Yshari discovered they were unable to defend themselves alone against such a powerful sorcerer, they united themselves with the Vizjerei, who realized the heinous and malignant turn their old friend had taken. They were unable to kill Barnham, however, and instead united their power in order to transform Barnham into a powerless and simple frog.
Years passed and Barnham the Great was forgotten. But every now and again, people would see this small, colorful frog, whom they named Binkles, jumping around and croaking quietly.
Many people have heard the stories of the heroes that have protected the world of Sanctuary. They have heard rumors of these warriors hacking down countless monsters and saving our very lives at the risks of their own. But other than myself, only one other being has been there from the beginning to see these stories unfold.
I remember when Tristham was destroyed. What broke my heart the most was to learn about the death of a young peg legged boy named Wirt. A cunning child who could barter with the best of them. What most people didn't know about Wirt was that he had a pet frog. The frog's name was Binkles.
Most people didn't know about his little companion because Binkles lived within Wirt's peg leg. The cozy hollow between Wirt's stump of a leg and the wooden peg leg itself was nice and cozy and just right for Binkles.
At least, it was until young Wirt was killed. Terrified and confused, Binkles continued to hide in the peg leg, listening to the screams of the other villagers as they were slaughtered.
Later, his home, the peg leg, was picked up by none other than the Hero of Sacntuary. As Binkles, secretly hidden within Wirt's peg leg, was carried back to town, fear and exhaustion was replaced by shame. He had let his master and best friend die and had done nothing to stop it.
By the time the Hero had arrived back in town with the peg leg, Binkles had come to a decision. He would avenge Wirt's death, and nothing would stop him. When the hero was preoccupied, Binkles hopped out of the leg, and made his way out of town.
Nobody has seen Binkles the Frog since, but I advise you, if you do... Stay out of his way.
Binkles the Frog has survived more horror than many men have. He was originally meant as a sacrificial delicacy to Astroga, the pet of Diablo. Binkles escaped the grips of the Triune when their temples fell under the wrath of Uldyssian and his followers.
Many question Binkles’ age; which to be honest—isn’t known with certainty. After he escaped the Triune, he made his home in the jungles of Kurast, in the Spider Forest. It seems quite ironic that the one place he would take shelter, would be in the midst of the very creatures that threatened his life. Here, he lived for a long time, in fear and paranoia.
His story then takes an interesting turn—the passing by of this strange dark wanderer had caused curiosity in the little fellow. He carefully followed this wanderer, and his companion, who referred to himself as Marius. Because of his small size, it was no difficult task to slip by unnoticed—until his curiosity nearly brought him to an early doom. Binkles was lured into the depths of The Durance of Hate—the lair of the great demon, Mephisto.
It was then revealed that Binkles the Frog was no mere creature—but an ancient Druid rumored to be an ally of the great Fiacla-Géar. This was a Shapeshifter. The Druid had survived for thousands of years, somehow unnoticed. The ancient synergies between nature and his ancestors had kept him alive and strong, and able to live in the secrecy, behind the veil of his physical form.
Upon entering Mephisto’s lair, his form was disabled, revealing his true self. His powers had been weakened after thousands of years of rest, and was captured by Mephisto’s minions. Times seemed bleak for Binkles, until a very interesting thing happened. A group of adventurers freed Binkles—perhaps unknowingly. He had been entrapped in a prison created by Mephisto, which had been opened once the demon was defeated. This turn of events allowed Binkles to make a move, and follow the heroes into the Burning Hells.
It has been twenty years since Diablo's defeat, and it is rumored that Binkles the Frog has resurfaced in Sanctuary, to face the new horror that threatens the Human race.
As the old Witch Doctor traveled through the dimly lit and dank smelling forest, his mind was racing with the images of another’s past. It is said that Witch Doctors are in touch with the spirits of the dead. This Witch Doctor was haunted by the story of a particular spirit, a Wizard named Munex, sent to the Unformed Land by his little brother. Munex cried out for someone to put an end to the corruption that had overtaken his little brother.
The story goes that Munex and his younger brother Bink would train together to improve their magical abilities, forsaking the structured environment of an academy for a much more rigorous and free-spirited form of training. However, the ambitious Bink, teasingly referred to as “Binkles” by his older brother, found that he wasn’t happy at the rate he was progression. Ambition ran in the family, with Munex leading the charge by leaving the academy, an act which obviously had a great influence on his younger brother. Bink however took it a step further, seeking power to not only progress with his brother, but surpass him. Munex, despite his disdain for authority, always insisted on forcing his will upon Bink, and Bink saw this as a way of trying to contain him, and suppress his ever growing power. So one day, while reading through some ancient tomes, Bink stumbled across accounts of much darker magic. Dabbling along the lines of Necromancy, but worse, this magic seemed almost demonic in nature. Bink became obsessed with acquiring knowledge about this dark and formidable magic. During subsequent training sessions Bink would announce something along the lines of:
“Sometime very soon brother, you will no longer be able to best me. You’ll get what is coming to you!”
“I admire your desire to become strong dear Binkles, but do not overestimate your limits, or your own magic will consume you.”
Before Bink would simply scoff off after comments like this, but Munex noticed that his once rather passive little brother was becoming more and more aggressive. Then, it happened. A few weeks later, the two brothers were sparring, a regular practice for them. Munex had the advantage, but Bink began to cast a spell the likes of which Munex had never seen before. Munex could sense the dark power building in his brother.
“Binkles, what are you doing!? Stop this!” he cried out, but his brother could no longer hear him. He could only hear a dark voice in his head telling him one thing: Kill. A swell of dark energy overtook the two Wizards, and in a flash, only one remained.
At the same time as the Witch Doctor saw this flash in his mind, so too was he surprised by a flash of moonlight as he walked through a clearing out of the forest. He was here, the scene of the terrible act he had seen in his head so many times before. The field was desolate, and the Witch Doctor could feel what seemed like a great weight on his shoulders. This was it.
A strange force hit him from out of nowhere, knocking the Witch Doctor off his feet. There, after all this time, stood Bink. He had grown significantly from what the Witch Doctor had seen in his visions, but there was no mistaking it. There was no mistaking the fear that he had felt through Munex’s spirit was now the same fear overtaking him. The Witch Doctor did not fear death though, what he feared most was facing the spirit of Munex in the Unformed Land if he should fail. He returned to his feet, and the two began and intense battle, powerful arcane power flowing from both of them. The Witch Doctor could feel his power diminishing, while it seemed that Bink’s power was endless. It was clear that he would not be able to kill Bink in combat like this, so he did the only thing he could think of. Using the last of his energy, he summoned a special fetish, which cast a powerful hex on Bink. Any normal spell of this nature would certainly have failed to affect Bink, but by giving the rest of his remaining life force, the Witch Doctor had drastically increased the power of the spell, allowing it not only to take hold, but to last much longer than any normal hex, though even he didn’t know how long. With his last breath, he gazed up at what was once a powerful wielder of demonic magic, and muttered
“Binkles… a fitting name for a frog.”

In one small town of the far away sorts,
lived a man named Binkles, a scribe from the ports.
He was a well read man, always punctual, always factual.
Every punctuation was placed as if straight from a manual.
He was a man living the life that he suited best,
and no matter what they did, he was better than the rest.
He loved the small town, but he longed to be rich.
He wanted the money, the women, and all that came in the niche.
So he set out for the place they all called Caldeum,
never knowing he walked straight to a coliseum.
He walked into town a midst its civil war state,
and was greeted by a man who seemed to be in the worst of fates.
"I need your help" he said in a hurry,
"They are after me and I am in dreadful worry!"
"I've learned too much now they want me gone,"
"But I do not have the strength to run further on!"
"Please take my knowledge, and use it well!"
Regrettably all Binkles saw was a story to tell.
So he wrote the man's words of treachery and lies,
of the demon that had caused the city's cries.
As the man finished the story he fell to heap,
all but landing atop the young scribes feet.
Paper in hand the scribe left the man,
off to devise his own devious plan.
With a story like this he could make millions!
He could make millions upon billions upon trillions upon zillions!
So he found himself a room and set to write at a break-neck pace,
hoping never to leave a moment to waste.
He stayed up late, working every day and every night,
perfecting his work until he saw morn's early light.
Once finished with his work he took one last glance,
and found something that was way more than chance.
This story, this fictional work,
it all seemed to fit in too well with the town's political murk.
It was a warning any sane man would heed,
but Binkles was too obsessed with his overzealous greed.
So he set off to print this story of fancy,
only to find out it made the people more antsy.
Sure it flew off the shelves and he made a much more than a buck,
but it ended up costing him all of his luck.
Once story was out and everyone knew,
the horrible truth that was known only to a few,
Binkles became a target, the target of a demon.
The Lord of Lies was a man of vengeance,
and he wouldn't be beaten without being payed a penance.
So he went to the house of this newly rich Binkles,
and thought he might sort out some unsightly wrinkles.
Binkles answered the door with a dead man's complexion,
not even able to speak with a proper inflection.
"You write like a scholar, but croak like a toad,"
"maybe we should see how that serves you on the road!"
So with his venomous glare, the lord of lies raised his hand,
and shouted out his final demand.
"You will leave this place and never return!"
"I will take fortune and all you have earned."
"But don't be in dismay!"
"I'll leave you to die another day!"
With a flick of his wrist the scribe up and vanished,
and appeared in a land of all worn and tarnished.
Weak and feeble he attempted to yell,
but all that came from his mouth was a croak of hell.
He was a frog, a lowly amphibian.
He was not any better than any simple minded simian.
His greed had costed him his life, his house, and all of his riches.
Now all he has are the scoundrels and the witches.
So from now on when someone says to use their words well,
we hope you wont see just a story to tell.
Binkles the frog was once known as Tathamet; after relentless war against his enemy, Anu, both were supposedly destroyed and through the aftermath of their destruction, they created the high heavens and the burning hells; but what was kept secret from us, was that one can never destroy these powerful deities, after all, Tathamet is a seven headed dragon who breaths fire, like dude…yeah. . Anu simply transformed his essence into what we know now as the Worldstone, to bloat to his new offspring (the angels) the power that he now has because he’s kind of a douche like that.
Tathamet however, a very simple and kind dragon transformed into a cute puppy; and after ages and ages of warring, he was tired from fighting. Wanting to both settle down and pursue his life long dream of well… simply mating, he devised a plan to get away from the ongoing battles between heaven and hell. After pillaging Inarius’s thoughts, Tathamet showed him how to use Anu to create another world, so both Inarius and him could get away from the constant fighting. Allying with Lilith, Inarius successfully obtained the Worldstone, and then used the powers it contained to create what we now know as the Sanctuary. As both Inarius and Lilith crusaded forward to the Sanctuary, a very happy Tathamet trailed behind them.
Tathamet, now overjoyed, set out on his true life’s mission; to mate and settle down, but mostly mate, don't judge. Just after being kicked out of New Tristram's night club a dozen times due to flashing his four genitals to the blacksmiths daughter (hey, its called love guys), Tathamet, walked very lonely in the moonlight by a stagnate pond. Frowning, he gazed down he saw a frog, but more importantly he saw what the frog protected, hundreds upon hundreds of eggs. Tathamet then had an epiphany; one frog would have to get laid at least 80 times to have that many eggs. Stricken by the new thought, Tathamet then transformed into a adorable frog, and is now, to this day, named Binkles. And if anyone asks; yes, he is not a virgin anymore.
And he lived happily ever after.

Binkles the frog was once known as Tathamet; after relentless war against his enemy, Anu, both were supposedly destroyed and through the aftermath of their destruction, they created the high heavens and the burning hells; but what was kept secret from us, was that one can never destroy these powerful deities, after all, Tathamet is a seven headed dragon who breaths evil just like its fire, like dude…yeah.
Binkles is the most interesting frog in the world ... He once threw a basketball up in the air to see how high it would go ... it never came back down.

If only they had listened.
~ Deckard Cain

Binkles the Frog
