Nice poll... I think I've thought of every single point that you mentioned, and have taken them all into account. The result? I have absolutely no clue what class I'm going to choose.
So... I decided to make a decision matrix (It's amazing what a slow day at work can do).
It looks like I'll be playing the Wizard or Barbarian, depending on what my friends choose. If 2 of my friends choose to play wizards, I will most likely roll Barbarian... if not, I'll probably be a wizard.
I love you. A man after my own heart.
I actually created a decision matrix program in Java as a school project that does these calculations for you. I might break it out... though it's not deployed. You've encouraged me!
I remember choosing the warrior in Diablo cause I'll always be the swordman, but in Diablo II I started with the Necro beacuse of his blue-energy black-skulls presentation.
I am very, very sad because they gave up on Paladin. He was my #1 choice.
My brother and I play Diablo very often via LAN, and we are both focused on melee combat because it gives us edge of facing demon hordes eye-to-eye, it is more tense, more "personal" , hehehe. He always plays Barbarian, as a main fighter force, and me as his fighter/support companion (besides, i always liked knights in shiny armor whose purpose was to protect innocent lives from evil, hehe)
Now, I don't know... I am not saying that the monk is bad, but, for me, he just doesn't fit in Sanctuary, like a character from the "wrong book", know what i mean?
...It seems that now, there's gonna be 2 barbarian at the same time
I don't think they gave up on the Paladin at all. In fact, I believe that there was a blue post about what had happened to them, alluding to some kind of reveal inside of Diablo 3. I can't find it so I may be totally wrong, but I do believe they plan to do something with the classes from Diablo 2, just as they did with the ones from Diablo in the sequel. I would not be surprised if they were released in the way of an expansion pack, for instance.
As far as there being two barbarians, I'd say there are no more two barbarians than the Assassin in Diablo 2 was a second barbarian. They have different playstyles and most likely different weapon types that they focus on.

I was a sad panda too when blizz told us that the only returning class is the barb but it was for the best and I'm glad there's 4 new classes in the game but yeah paladin could've been my first choice no question. I'm pretty sure there will some kind of paladin (knight or maybe templar, the followers themselves becomes one of the next heroes) on xpac.
Anyway, I chose play style now that paladin is out then archetype then skills and traits next of where I'm basing on what class to play. To tell you the truth I'm undecided again of what class to be my main. The only thing I'm certain at the moment is witch doctor will be my last class to play. Do not flame me, it's just a personal choice because I'm not a big fan of summoning class.
So to answer what class to play first, I might go for barb but doesn't mean it will be my main. My main will be decided after I played all 'cept WD.

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
Personally it will be mainly play style for me. Playing d2 I enjoyed playing both the necromancer and the amazon therefore I think that it will be a debate for me to chose the demon hunter or witch doctor . But who knows
Monk all the way... my personal class order will most likely be
Monk
Demon Hunter
Barbarian
Wizard
Witch Doctor
those icons made me smile

DH....simply because she looks like a beast in the class cinematic...and because it appears no one's gonna give her a chance. I love playing classes that no one else seems to care about!
I am the same way. For some reason I gravitate toward the most underwhelming class or the class I feel people are least likely to pick. So probably DH for me.
I was leaning toward Witch Doctor for a long time but the more I mulled it over in my head the more I wanted to roll a Monk. For a Hack and Slash game I'm going to get more enjoyment out of a melee character, but I'm just not a Barbarian at heart. I'm hoping the Monk will sate my appetite for up close combat while fitting the playstyle that I'm comfortable with.
This is a great way to say what I felt but could't find the words!! Thanx bro!

Sometimes you don't always know where you stand... until you know that you won't run away.
I have three friends who are about as obsessed with Blizzard as myself, so we are working on building an effective full team of four. One friend has been infatuated with the Necromancer since day 1 of Diablo 2, so he is going the closest route by choosing the . I've shown every video and summarized the articles on DiabloFans to another friend, and he has his heart set upon the and his/her awesome runestone effects thus far. The third (my brother) ends up playing some kind of magic user or support in most games, and he is considering going a different build of the , or perhaps the .
Given this, I am more than content on playing the remaining two classes, my Number One choice being the (too many years as a healer, it's time to get mad), with the following closely behind (mostly because I just finished playing Diablo 1 again, playing as the Rogue class).
Hopefully the team will be rounded enough to rub 's face in the dirt.
I think I'm going to end up choosing Demon Hunter. Ever since the class has been announced I've been watching gameplay nonstop of the class. I love the dark skills and quick long-ranged movements. I don't usually go with ranged classes, usually it's more of a magic choice for me, but the Demon Hunter is much more suiting for the style I am trying to play as. (Plus all my friends are being the other classes and having a full part of every class would be amazing)
Big weapons, slow attack speeds, big numbers. I don't believe in killing something unless it's swift, brutal, and close enough to smell their last breath.
In other words, barbarian.

It is hard to choose just one option on the poll. I would say skills and traits as well as playstyle influence me the most. Also I won't be playing the WD first based on looks, it just doesn't scream Diablo to me. I still like him, he just won't be my first character.
My first character will be a Wizard, but I'm uncertain if I'll go melee or spellcaster. My first character in Diablo 2 was the Barbarian which I chose mostly because I found the Warrior the easiest to play in D1 and I thought the Barbarian looked badass. I didn't know anything about D2 at that stage, not even the skills.
Barb, if its same barb from D2 then it will be my first choice

I love to smash / get my way through with brute force it's always fun to get in the middle of the action and tear up everything around you.

I actually think that my personal order of trying the classes is exactly the same.
