Thanks for the link Jackzor, that's a shame about the materials taking up inventory space. I must have got my wires crossed. I suppose it's designed to stop you from simply salvaging everything you find.
Basic items will only be useful to salvage at the beginning of the game then you're going to need materials mostly from magic items. And so on for rares and possibly set and unique pieces at the end game. At least this is how I interpret it. This will keep the pace up. I think Bashiok mentioned that with increased stash size materials shouldn't take up too much room, so we'll see.
I read through all the blue posts and skimmed the others.
Hearing about the inventory management part of crafting in D3, I'm a little nervous - I get flashbacks of playing a resto/feral druid in WoW. However, I will probably be playing more or less exclusively with someone else so I think there will be plenty of motivation to max out our respective artisans. Probably each of us choosing one or two and the other choosing the compliment.

Yea, they take up inventory space but they can stack up to some ridiculous number, so its pretty negligible. And I don't know that what you'll need to salvage will line up exactly like that, but whatever you'd be picking up to sell you could also decide to salvage. You won't have to go out of your way to pick up low level items in order to salvage them. Unless your behind on your Artisan progression, but thats just something thats unavoidable.
I expect a lot of people will sell almost everything (because gold is valuable in D3) until they find a good recipe, then they will pay attention to what they need and salvage a lot more items so they can make the item, and then go back to selling most stuff until they find another good recipe. It should be more interesting than D2 in any case.
Despite what this poll is showing, I think fewer people will actually level their artisans. I don't think a lot of people are taking into account the negatives of crafting. Not the system itself but what the side effect of it is and that is the loss of items/money. If a striving economy exists in Diablo, then money will be very valuable. salvaging every item will leave you with considerably less money for every other gold sink in the game. Respec, gem upgrades, and other important gold sinks will balance out just what they player can do with their limited funds this time.
I plan on leveling at least one artisan to the max but I don't think I will max all of them because I will be spending the resources else where.

If memory serves materials are going to be stackable (per type) and since you will be using them to obtain specifical items I can't imagine you will collect whole stashes of the stuff. I figure each of us will be focused on specifical items to craft and so you will collect what you will need. I also guess we will have fair common materials we are not going to amass as well as quite rare stuff which we'll get in small amounts and we will use either to craft or trade.
Again, in my opinion, salvaging will be used extensively by a fair amount of players (I guess I'll be one of them, in Oblivion I can't help but stop to every flower to collect ingredients ) while others will prefer to rely on trade to put their hands on the rarest stuff (I take it materials will be tradable).
I plan on crafting almost all of the items I can. I think that the expansion of crafting is one of the best things to happen with the Diablo series. Period.
i definately agree with you. Who wouldn't wanna max out all the artisans. First reason is to see what each specialized aritisan is capable of. This will allow us to get a feel of the artisans for when we make new characters. Also might open up a new way of trading too. You could use your max artisans to craft items for other players in exchange for gold, items, etc.
I think it will make a lot of difference just not having to store material junk in your inventory, that gets old fast when you have less room because of 10 or 20 different material types.
This is true, however you're going to be given a lot more space than in D2, so I don't see it being too much of an issue.
