Thanks to a recent string of Tweets from @Diablo there has been some clarification on damage types and resistances that will be included in Diablo III. While the standard Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, Poison, and Arcane (Magic) are still in the game they have added a few more to the line up.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Diablo: @Scyberdragon Damage types will likely change some but are currently Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, Poison, Disease, Arcane, and Holy.
Holy damage has been added primarily for the Monk. Where in Diablo II, the Paladin's Holy attacks were considered either Magic or just Physical, the new Holy warrior will actually inflict Holy damage.
The other damage type added is Disease. While some would say that Poison and Disease would be the same, there will be a distinct difference in the game from their effects.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Diablo: @Wickedbubba Disease has a damage debuff (both intake and output), and poison has a health debuff (regen/heal). Subject to change of course.
As stated above, poison will remain the same as it did in Diablo II. Slowing the regeneration of your health and slowly draining it will be the effect of being poisoned. However, Disease will increase the damage you take. It will also be able to decrease the amount of damage you deal out. While it is clear who the Holy damage was added for, Disease is not so clear. It is very possible that the Witch Doctor will have some Disease skills given his poison-themed nature. However, creating this distinct difference may be for a particular reason adding Disease to another classes repertoire. Of course, there is the chance that Disease has been added as an attack type of monsters to unleash upon your character.
While the effects may differ significantly from Poison and Disease, both will share the same resistance. Just one more example of how they can add depth to the game but not overly complicate systems.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Diablo: @Grug16 Fairly significant in their difference, but both countered with a single resistance. Damage/resists aren't design complete though.
All of this leaves open debate to the Demon Hunter and what kind of damage her attacks will do. Some may be fairly obvious like Spike Trap doing Physical damage and Molten Arrow doing fire, there are still a lot of her skills we have yet to see. With her lore focusing on Shadow magic and demon influences, it is possible that they may add yet one more damage type to aid this hero.
Of course, all of this information, as noted by @Diablo, is subject to change as the game is still going through constant iteration and change.

Very interesting, although I'm not sure if this a good sign or not. I do like the addition of holy and disease but if they add any more damage types it could become an overly complex system in a game thats not meant to be very complex. I do like how they have one resistance to cover both poison and disease though, keeping it somewhat simple is great.
I agree. I think what the blizzard team is good at is adding depth to a game but not complexity.I wonder if holy will have its own resistance or if it will be paired like poison/disease.

I don't know. To me, they are really making a clear distinction between magic and arcane. While Holy fits in with magic, I don't feel it fits in with Arcane.
@maka - I think curses and disease will still have a clear distinction. Curses did a lot more than make you more vulnerable or do less damage.

While I can see the statistical difference between poison and disease, I'm not sure how Blizzard will help players differentiate between the two visually. Maybe poison damage will take the appearance of greenish gas while disease will be a mucousy semi-liquid.
I think combining resistances together is a great idea. I already found it difficult enough to build up the small variety of resistances in the last game; I'd probably be overwhelmed if there were any more in the next.
It can also open up some curses to do some disease/poison damage or that can add to the effectiveness of disease/poison damage source.
From the types of known damage types Holy and Arcane are the closest to each other. You can still have them doing different effects and such. I would just place Holy as a subtype of Arcane. Most places the meaning of Arcane is secret or mysterious knowledge. Holy damage can fit in it since only the most Holy of people would be taught that knowledge.
As for resistance I can see just a generic Magic Resistance that covers all the elements except physical. Maybe a few items that have small amount of absorb/resistance for the damage type (Uniques/Sets/Artisan(Crafts)).

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
Well considering how much detail they've put in a lot of things (ie different look for each rune) I'm sure they'll be able to at least have different hues of green for disease and poison.
Different hues but you are likely not going to notice it too much when playing since you are likely going to be paying attention to other things, especially if playing Hardcore.

Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, Poison, Disease, Arcane, and Holy.
This is how I imagine them. Physical should be the standard in-game text color. In my opinion, Holy should be completely white, if it's gold it would intrude too much in the lightning's yellow. Like rares vs. uniques in D2, many people confused those colours. Poison and disease could have the same colour (green), since they share the resistance.
Lightning damage is blue (which is far more realistic than yellow). Frost is more white-gray-light blue than just blue.
Really? I guess if they changed the colour of the actual effect, changing the colour of the damage was a must. Still, lightning should be yellow, even if it's unrealistic. DII has it that way, so does Pokemon. I guess my lightning=yellow association comes from them.
I guess it could work, if cold was more white than blue. That would leave room so Holy can be golden.
New colours: Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, Poison, Disease, Arcane, and Holy (not really golden, but as close as it gets).
I liked my other list better, this one just lacks in something. Maybe Holy should be more yellowish than that.
So if poison does lingering damage to one monster, would disease allow the monsters to spread damage to any monster it is touching? I like that. It's what Rabies should have been in D2.

"It's hard to kill a man once you've seen pictures of his kids"
If you're referring to the fact that he says damage types are subject to change, it seems like they pretty much throw that on the end of everything they say, as they could technically reiterate something or change it if they want to. It doesn't mean that they actually will, its just something they leave open for pretty much everything.
And I think diseases jumping from one person to another is a Locust Swarm specific thing. I don't think all diseases have that effect, but it would make sense for other diseases to be contagious.

One thing im curious about is the color of holy and desiese.
Holy im expecting to be a orangy like we have seen. but what about poison. I would think green but that is poison. purple? that arcane.
