My money's always been on an early 2011 release, and I think that's what we're gonna get. There's no way they can pull off a 2010 date anymore, but early 2011 would give them just those extra months needed. Having to wait another full year now would just seem extremely long, too long given the stage they're at now.
I don't think that they would delay the game to hit a specific date but I think that as time has rolled around, they have always tried to shoot for June 28th, regardless of what year it came out. This date is just too important to the Diablo franchise. This year it happens to land on a Tuesday which is when videogames are released as well.

But would that date really be important enough to determine their schedule? What would be the point of that? And would the current team actually care that much about that date?
only certain specifics need tweaking, they're not programming everything from the start with the thought "ok we got to end up with 700 combinations". the combinations, visuals and effects are there. now all that's needed is a bit balancing. it wont delay the production too much.
Yeah, exactly. For balance testing, all they have to do is alter some values. If they put a couple of experienced guys on that, it can be done in a matter of days. And there's nothing a patch won't fix...
And again, most of their balancing can be done through calculations. During one of the Blizzcons, they showed some excel sheets they were using just for that as well as Jay saying when balancing out the resource systems that it is all math.
X dmg over y time - z energy = total output. change any one of these variables and then just change the others to match the final output.

I sincerely hope for a summer 2011 release, but I can't help thinking about PVP and Battle.net. They haven't released any information on their progress with these things, and they could delay the game if they haven't gotten very far yet. I hope this is not the case, maybe we'll find out at BlizzCon.

You must find the courage to step through this gate...
My prediction: June 29th, 2011. Perhaps slightly sooner but no later. It just makes sense.
How come no one has mentioned that quote recently where Bash said something like "Who says its coming out in 2011 ;)"?
SC2 required a 2 month beta due to 2 factors:
1.) Test Battlenet2.0
2.) Balance for Tournament play
Diablo 3 may come with PVP yes... but IMHO Diablo was NOT ever designed to be a PVP game. This has been and always will be a PVE game with PVP as an add-on.
This being said... who is to say that they even require an open beta? Why couldn't they release it in time for the holidays and draw the Xmas revenue?
