I have a bunch of info on core issues. I'm having trouble finding on-topic threads to give it out.
So it seems that we are in a news lull not because there is nothing to say, just that people are not asking the right questions. People may say "Why don't they just give us some new info?". To that Bashiok responded:

Because then I'd be creating announcements instead of holding open discussions of uncertain in-progress features. Quite different. And posting a bunch of questions in a row in a thread that's aimed at attempting to just get new info isn't going to work!
Bashiok is a community manager for Blizzard whose job is to communicate with the community and not just report news on Diablo. So as a community, we need to get together and brainstorm some new questions to ask Bashiok. Core ideas to the game is the information he said he has so what questions can we come up with? Everyone needs to get in gear and ask some questions over at battle.net. If you do not have a battle.net account, then ask your questions here and I will relay them them for you.

Im currently working on a big post with some questions on the d3 forums. It will be posted under the name "Hilal" since no other account is working out for me. Anyway stay tuned xD
I remember watching a TV show where they were carrying on that experiment. They had that rat placed in a sort of labyrinth with some challenges interspersed and at the end of which there was a bit of cheese(or some other food).
It was supposed to test the rat's intelligence or something i think.
Funny, don't you think?
I heard there's going to be hugeass piece of cheese at blizzcon. Is it possible for us to wait, maybe? Anyway I'm going for the big cheese really. They'll just distribute it freely too.
And thus the problems with battle.net. I will brave the trolls though if someone has a question and doesn't want to walk in the murky waters that is troll country (battle.net).

In diablo 2 there were multiple ways to make or modify equipment, socketing, crafting, making runewords, rolling. The horadric cube was a huge part in the whole game and I liked it very much.
My question would be how much can players affect the goodity of their equipment in diablo 3 besides the obvious option that is just finding better gear?
posted on Battle.net for you

You guys are going to jump through a bunch of hoops just so Bastok doesn't have to take the time from his day to think about something new to update?!?
Blizzard has some of you by the short and curlys.
How Blizzard isn't being shown in the light of elitists by internet sites like this is a testament to the control that Blizzard has on its followers, and consequently what they can get away with.
If SOE and the Vanguard rep's tried to post something like this it would be all over the internet how the Vanguard rep's are all high and mighty and disassociated from the player base. Yet with Blizzard, its the players fault that info isnt coming out cause we didnt ask, and you guys agree.
As mentioned in the OP, Bashiok's job is not to release new info. He is given a certain amount of info to share if needed. His actual job is to communicate to the Diablo community. If we, the Diablo community, ask the right questions, then he has the information to share. If he just did weekly updates, the community would not be as involved and thus he fails at his job. He wants people talking about Diablo, not waiting to hear something new.

GAH! More than likely it's taking so long because, yeah, they have reworked the system so much that the old gameplay video probably won't even be like the game is now. WE shall find out at BlizCon, I guess.

I was keeping up with the forum 6 months ago until I got tired of hunkering down under Blizzard's table waiting for a freaking crumb to fall. I thought I'd check back and see if we fans had been granted any information of value, and this scenario answers my question in full. Not only do we have to wait for a crumb to fall, but we are expected to beg for it.
Why the constant shroud of secrecy? They are working (at least they claim to be working) on a game. They guard every detail from us as though it was a matter of freaking national security. How hard is it to let us know how things are going, what progress has been made, what possibilities are being considered? We love the game and simply want to feel as though we are part of the process.
Here are a couple of questions:
-When will the game be released?
-Why the hell is it taking so long?
I actually think you just want to be fed way too much information. We know far enough about the game and they actually communicate and keep a line open with us. Its absolutely stupidly insane how many companies don't ever say a word or share any information with their community so much that after years, you don't even know if the game is still in the making.
I hate Bashiok but as far as Blizzard keeping in contact with the community, they are doing more than most. I suggest you just get in a hole and wait for Blizzcon.
