We all know that not every class can wield each type of weapon. However, what about armor? It is easy to see that each class has been shown with a very distinct look when it comes to their armor. The Barbarian is decked out in heavy armor, the Witch Doctor barely wears anything, and the Monk and Wizard have their light flowing armor. So, how does the varying types of armor fit into these distinct looks.
There is also the confusion that auto stats bring to the situation. In Diablo II, any class cold wear any armor as long as they put enough points into strength, but now that we cannot choose to do this. So, do stats still play a part in what armor we can equip? However, it has been stated that every character will be able to equip any piece of armor.
Well, Bashiok made a post answering some of these questions.
Official Blizzard Quote:
I've seen a lot of people say things similar to this, but it's kind of a funny notion. If we were to have armor types, which we don't, what would be the point of labeling them as "cloth, leather, mail, etc" if everyone could equip them?
First off, many fans should be happy with the fact that they are not using an "armor type" system similar to WoW's. In WoW, classes were restrained to wear only certain types of armor such as cloth, leather, mail, and plate. But in Diablo III, they will have no such system. Your Wizard will not be forced to wear only cloth armor. In fact, "cloth" armor does not even exist in the game. While we have seen items like "Leather Gloves" and "Quilted Pants", these titles are not specifying a type of armor, merely how strong the item is.
With the question about the unique looks if each character, Bashiok also responded by saying:
Official Blizzard Quote:
The look of the armor on your character is determined by the level of armor and your class. There are exceptions, but that goes for the majority of normal armor.
Therefore, every class will continue to look unique, despite everyone wearing the same armor. The item level of the armor and the character determine what it looks like and not necessarily the item itself. Which means, I don't have to worry about my Witch Doctor looking like your Barbarian when we have the same armor equipped. Another interesting note is at the end of his post. It appears that there will definitely be unique armor that looks the same no matter who is wearing it.
Unfortunately, this still leaves us with a lot of questions on just how the armor system will work. Will a Witch Doctor be able to equip certain armor at the same level as a Barbarian? Will the armor just give less defense on certain classes like the Monk? Will there be separate level restrictions on each piece of armor for each class? Hopefully, we will get some more information on this soon.

I'm assuming that dropped loot does not depend on your character's class. So, if you're a Wizard, two handed axes and fist weapons will still drop for you, you'll just be unable to use them. This means you can still trade/sell/transfer loot even if it doesn't fit the character you found the loot with.
What about exceptionals and elite items? I don't recall any information on they existing and, if they do, will they look better than the normal versions?
Actually I think of exceptionals and elite as a quick fix, they should not be in the game at all if well planned, but if they do, at least they must look stronger or brighter than the normal items. It's really annoying to dump you old Full Plate Mail look with 100 AC for that unique Dusk Shroud with 1300 AC which makes you look like a bum again.
Yeah, finay a confirmation in what i've hoped about how armor works.
About how things will work (restriction wise), i really don't know. Imo in this aspects the stats alocation will be missed, and put restriction based at autosttus doesn't look right.
thing that really confuses me is.....
can you find barbarian armor on drops or are the drops character specific.
Or does armor automatically adjust its stats on pickup
??? hein ? ("barbarian armor" can't exist, if you re-read post, you will understand that every armors can be weared by every class) Armor automatically adjust it's stats on pickup ??? What you mean ? I never heard something stupid like that ?! And when you want want trade it the stats re-adjust ?? lol
I find it really great, only stat will guide your character to know what he'll wear first! I think it's a good system !! I don't know which stats will be on armor (strenght, dex...??)

In the quote, Bashiok mentions that almost all armor will look different depending on who is wearing it. I assume that certain uniques will have special looks to the armor instead of the character so it will have a special look to it.

not really the same. I think in D3 it will be much more stylized than D2. I don't think the will look like he is wearing a full set of armor ever. Characters will always look like their class. Plus, we didn't have a in Diablo yet so I have no idea what he will look like. I think something like this is the heaviest he will look. His bracelets and anklets are metal rather than wood or cloth.

I would imagine that some unique armors and probably some set armors would be set to look the same no matter who's wearing it. That's a nice addition and certainly sets a good tone for D3 and sparks some questions that immediately come from the imagination...
What would your character look like wearing armor like Sparking Mail? Iceblink? Infernostride? Waterwalk? I could just imagine the visual effects of the brimming of elemental magics from these armors. Weapons wouldn't be out of the question, either, but since this topic is about armor, I'm sticking to the issue at hand. Imagine sets as well - the Wizard wearing Arcanna's Tricks set would look the same as the WD wearing it. Hee hee hee, I get all happy with nerd-like glee just thinking about these kinda things.

They are suggesting inconsistency within the unique armor types on differing classes? Seems strange to me. I thought there might be deviation but not enough to be deemed inconsistent.
As long as the ultimate armors each class will inevitably wear around levels 85~99 are made of mind blowing awesomesaucess, bad ass mofosity and pure gold win... I'm ok.
