I don't see how its the same as getting a new weapon, basically a bag is inventory space, inventory space is a sort of a game "utility" to store items, make inventory space inefficient and difficult to get to (Oblivion) would make that part of the game a pest, enable too little inventory space in relation to the rest of the game (variety and amount of items, average amount of items a character might want to have, etc,...) and it feels like a unfair restriction, make it too big (or god forbid, unlimited) and you do nothing more but packrat everything.
Apply that to a weapon, the utility used to kill things, the main goal of the game. A crappy weapon effectively hinders your progress, making it hard to kill monsters and, in the end, frustrating to play. Make the weapon do infinite damage and, well, that's not a good idea.
There's one difference here; monsters increase in difficulty, hence items have to scale in order to keep gameplay balanced. Now as far as I know, items don't scale in inventory size. That leaves two options:
1. Size of items doesn't increase, but perhaps drops do. Or rather valuable drops. If the amount of things that are useful to a character increases as the game progresses, then an increase in stash size is needed, otherwise we'll be sitting on too small inventories in the end or too big in the beginning.
2. I'm not 100% sure here, but are bags stated to be to increase character inventory or stash? Because of the latter, then more bag space will have an effect on trade, as a similar amount of people be able to store and trade larger amounts of items. But bags are for persons, aren't they?
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
My opinion on the bag system is that they are a good idea, because it was much too small in diablo 2 for my taste especially once the Charms appeared.
I think it could be interesting for the bags to be magic, to be just like the charms, you could use a maximum of 10 bags and each bags would give 1 slot for each groups of items(ex:"weapon and armor", misc.). those 10 bags would replace the charms if they are not in diablo 3. You would have 10 space reserved to equip bag. Every bags would give the same amount of space or its could give more space but with less powerful magic effect.
If the bags system were to become like that I would really like it.
That is kind of a cool idea- dual-purpose. It would also make it so that you aren't just trading for a bag for a certain amount of space, you'd have to take in to account other things, as well.
Royalty fee? What does that mean? Is that just paying real money to buy in-game stuff? Example, 5$ for more space?
They have never even come close to say that they would have such things. They said battle.net might have some features that requires you to pay (god knows what, though), but as far as the game goes, they would just shoot themselves in the foot for including anything like that.
I also disagree completely with random bag drops. In fact, I don't like bags at all. But don't make them random. This is just stupid. They have a HUGE impact on your character and thats all there is to it.
I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but I would hope that Blizzard would have an inventory like Titan Quest where you can organize your whole inventory by clicking a button. The button in Titan Quest automatically organized all potions, weapons, armor, ect. The order of the items depended on each click of the button.
Increasing the inventory bags as you progress through the game would significantly cut down the use of mules. Sure, early in the game you pick up all the crap to sell for money for tp's and pots etc. but everything you pick up is basically junk and you have no reason to create a mule to hold your extra (crap) goodies. Later in the game you pick up uniques that can't just be sold off or thrown away, so without an increased inventory space it inevitably leads to mule creations and many pointlessly wasted hours of drop-trading.
I, for one, welcome our new bag-dispensing overlords.
Don't get me wrong, I seriously enjoyed the inventory-tetris mini-game. My friends would ask me to do theirs, some times. And it has been a staple of Diablo games. It also made logical sense to my mind that one could carry more smaller things than larger things, and larger things took up more space. (Of course, it still didn't make sense that a sorceress or a necro could carry around as much as a barbarian, toting around five plate mail armor pieces+, but oh well. Suspension of reality in favor of fun = good times in my book.)
That said, I just plain like the bag system better, as much as I'll miss the old one. I am thinking that maybe they will opt to make a virtually limitless stash (like your house in Oblivion) that you can just chuck anything you want into. Not saying that I think it should look or function like the house (more like just a huge chest or something).
I really liked PlugY's inventory paging system. You could scroll by 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 or 1,000 pages left or right. That way, I was able to reserve 1,000 pages for set pieces, uniques, yellows, etc., and have the ability to maneuver between sub-sections for the different item classes (weapons, armor, rings, etc.)
I hope that they have some similar organization system set in place for D3. Having limitless inventory space with a lame organizing system is almost too much to bear, at times (I'm looking at YOU, Mass Effect).

"I fight for a better tomorrow not because I believe one to be necessarily forthcoming, but because I believe a better tomorrow is worth fighting for."
You don't kill monsters with bags, nor defend yourself with them, nor use it to buff others, nor anything which actually directly contributes to the gameplay, its just a utility to store items.
Which I don't necessarily agree with. The gameplay of Diablo doesn't end the moment you stop killing monsters. The main part of the game does, but that's not to say that other aspects, such as trading and interacting with NPCs (selling, quests etc.) isn't an integral part.

I can agree somewhat with point one, but what is the benefit of making it depend on rare (you must get em all) random bag drops? None whatsoever. Maybe at most increase inventory each act or something, easy enough. Plus i don't see exactly the problem with having a big amount of space to begin with, isn't that something you would want to fill with goodies eventually? Its like saying "i'm too naked to begin with" so lets disable our naked torso and only enable it if you drop a rare "torso". Besides my inventory was always completely full when i started out, because i gathered all crap so i could get myself a few bucks to buy townportals and whatnot with and store (useless) items which could be of temporarily use a few levels up.
Because there's another way to reward players.
I see your point though, but I seriously doubt you're going to be able to progress through the entire game without having ample opportunities to increase your bag space. Like previosuly mentioned, a quest reward or a periodic increase every few levels or acts would work, but that's not to say drops can't be apart of it.
As with anyhting else in D2, if it is dropped it can be traded. Perhaps it would only be specialized bags, like gem bags or similar. Regular bag increases could perhaps be periodic and set, and more special, would be drops.

Just another reason why this whole bag thing sucks. Why would we find more useful stuff in higher levels? There should be just as much (relatively) chance of finding useful items at the start, and thus the inventory size should be the same throughout the game.
It depends on what kind of items we're looking for. If there's any form of crafting, then I imagine more parts of that will drop later on. Runes and gems could perhaps become more common on higher levels, or you will get a greater scope of viable items. It's impossible to say right now when we know short of nothing of what we'll be getting.

This is probably a good system. I think Blizzard mentioned that there won't be any charms in Diablo 3 but I can't remember where. If they do include charms or some type of stat-boosting inventory held item then I can't imagine how this system could possibly work. But I'm sure Blizzard'a already abolished those things so it should be okay.
When it comes to immersion however, this seems a bit dubious to me. It is of course highly unrealistic to have an inventory the size of an aircraft carrier which it seems you could very well obtain after playing the game for a while. Still, I think the players who play more competively will definitely enjoy the ability to hold as many items as they please.
I'm not really against the small bag you get when you start the game. At least this is a bit immersive. It makes sense that a new warrior wouldn't want to weigh themeselves down with an excessively large bag. On the whole, I think I like this idea.
I honestly don't quite understand why the first assumption you immediately jump to has got to be 'royalty fees'. Never has Blizzard ever mentioned that they had any intention of implementing features that required royalty fees in the game, so where is all this coming from?
it does add more to the game. but im seeing myself with a tiny inventory and i gotta go to town over and over again.
kinda bad for the game phase i think. but MAYBE not! oh well... gotta check out how it plays out. =P cant wait to get my hands on the game. =)
edit:
gotta see if small inventory is the new "i gotta go to town get some pots/arrows/repair gear" ...although in D2 i had to go to town all the time anyways to atleast empty my inventory, it doesnt mean i liked it. =P but as i said, we will see how it works. =)
Actually, its not going to work like that. At least, I doubt it, considering how Bashiok was speaking.
Basically, less inventory just means they want you to have more decisions to make about what items to carry and to bring back to town. I'm guessing the days of town portals are over (which would be an awesome thing, by the way - a broken concept all around) and that means there is no way you can just take everything and keeping selling it to town. You HAVE to choose.
i agree with my fellow comrade, they should have learned something from TitanQuest (http://www.titanquestgame.com/ if u don't know the game), the "tetris" system is pretty good, but drop bags? i think that you should or earn then as rewars for quests or make then yourself (but then u would need a lot of work, or it would be too easy), by getting drops from mobs like tissue and stuff
Bags as quest reward >>> Bags as drops
They should have learned it from Titan Quest* by now

The other obvious chance is o change the increments. Going from 0 to 14 is a big step, while going from 18 to 20 is, indeed, practically useless. If the bags in D3 are something like 10>20>30 slots, we're talking about a noticeable increase.
I agree. If they want to add bags to the game they should make the player feel like they're improving their character no matter what bag he/she just found. I only played WoW for like a 3 months about a year ago so i dont remember so well but one thing I hated was finding those smaller bags the 4 slot i think it was freakin ridiculous, cause then u got the 8 slots, i felt like getting rid of them.

The one who makes it doesn't make it for himself. The one who buys it doesn't buy it for himself. The one who needs it doesn't know it when he needs it.
that's exactly what i'm saying, having small bags that u get easily don't give you that "warm fuzzy feeling inside" of when you get an amazing item by gambling
