Bashiok has just responded to a user inquiry on the Battle.net forums in regards to how dropping keys would work in Diablo 3 - ie: specific keys used for specific things, instead of the more random keys that we saw in Diablo 2. Here's what Bashiok had to say in regards to the question:
So what do you think? Would you rather have random keys work in all chests, or do you like the more specific keys only working with certain things? Personally, I prefer the more specific ones because it adds an extra element of challenge. I like having to hunt for an item, battling my way through hordes of enemies. Makes it all the more satisfying when I finally get it!
I dunno, I really like the idea of chest requiring more complex keys to open them, I just think that perhaps they would be dropped more. And maybe have the super-keys being able to open the lame chests as well. Then it adds bit of a key game to the whole thing
i don't think mockery understood what Bashiok was saying.
needing a unique key for a unique chest is just a side quest, which doesn't bother me. needing a rarely dropped, high-tier key to open a rarely spawned, high-tier chest is completely different. just because you were lucky enough to have one appear, doesn't mean the other will... ever. you'd need to win two lotteries to claim one prize. it wouldn't be a matter of challenge or searching, it'd be a matter of luck and grinding.
Bashiok had it right. this would be more frustrating than fun.
I'd actually like to see locked chest, just however so much more difficult.
I never found it much of a trouble to come across a locked chest, I always carried 12 keys and whenever I came across one, picked it up, added to quantity and tossed it away.
What I would like to see however, is magically imbued chests. Let's say you're a barbarian and you come across this chest that has a kind of deem glow to it. Barbarians not being the smartest of all would simply grab their big meighty weapon and beat the shit out of it, only to be cursed until they get healed by a witchdoctor at town.
Instead why not let the barbarian throw an axe using a skill? To avoid direct touch with the chest.
Same thing with say a sorceres, let's say there's a mirroring enchantment and she casts lightning bolt to find it hurtling back at her ass. Now how cool would it be to have a delayed spell which sends lightning from above to crack the chest.. or that she'd throw an exploding potion.
...
Meh, just minor ideas really.
I really like this idea, but maybe only for chests at the end of a quest or something. I could see this becoming annoying too if you get used to what color the glow is.

Wait... Wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose? LOL
Well, I guess it wouldn't if the keys inside the locked chests were to even better chests themselves...
There are many subtle games within the game of Diablo II, if I'm not mistaken
