Official Blizzard poster Bashiok has mentioned the possibility of monsters using the environment against players, in addition to the other way around.
In PvP, can a player utilize the interactive environment to cause harm to another player? Can certain Mobs be able to use the interactive environment against you?
Bashiok: Right now if you knock down a wall on top of, or drop a chandelier on the head of someone in your party, it does damage/"daze" them. There's some potential issues with it, right now it's sort of just there because of the way those object interact with player characters as a whole. It's possible that due to exploitative or griefing potential they just can't continue to work that way. We'll see.
Enemies will destroy some/most destructible objects if they're in their way. Whether that may include actual damage dealing destructibles or not is probably more of a design decision on a case by case basis. We sort of want to reserve that for the player too I think, being able to damage enemies with the destructbles, but specific creatures that use the environment to their advantage are always cool.
I'd take the post with a grain of salt, because it sounds more along the lines of something that would be cool to put in, but not necessarily a priority for the developers.
Honestly speaking, how much do you think such an addition to gameplay would add to the overall experience? I'm fairly content with the fact that players will be able to interact with the environment without having monsters have a go at it, too. Put it this way: it might even be annoying to be constantly stunned by enemies who drop rocks on players, and that could get pretty old.
I don't think it will be too much of a problem either way. There will be a finite number of interactable environmental objects so once we can recognize them all they (monsters/jerks) won't be able to ambush us with them. Also, there must be a way to easily recognize them, otherwise, how would any one know to set them off?
That woudl be cool if mosnters used the envirment agaisnt you

It could be become similar to those fire shrines in Diablo 2, where some ass (me) would run up to them and activate them when his friends were on low life
Don't know if it will work like that in game.
But having "smarter" monsters using the enviroment against you might be cool.
On the other way, some "brute" monsters might just go straight to you destroing everything in their path.
And always that "ogre" one that grabs a tree or a pillar to hit you.
Perhaps this is something that sounds cool but would be annoying as he said, i mean... do we really want monsters dropping chandeliers on us?
I don't know about game design but the extra calculations sound like lag in the making (for the monsters aiming at players with objects).
Man that's just being dumb. It's not that monsters will "throw" chandeliers on us but shit if your standing under a chandelier then your just asking for trouble or acting plain stupid. I think that if the player can use the environment then the monsters should logically be able to do the same. (If physically possible) Meaning I wouldn't picture a Zombie reaching the chandelier but if there was any type of magic using creature that aimed at you and accidentally hit it then it should fall or break. If a giant brute swung a huge club and hit a table it should splinter just as the barb's swing would make it do. In this way you really feel like its a breakable environment and a real battle. If giant creatures thrash and clobber and you have nothing but a breeze to indicate they did, I think it would detract immensely from the game's realism and feel.
I think a part of the game's epic feel should be the monsters, not only the hero. Yes, an epic hero is cool, but a cool hero fighting epic monsters (a la God of War) is even better. I hope blizzard won't be giving us another bunch of " Blunderbores". In case your not a D2 player, that was the highly anticipated gargantuan beast sporting a man's body as a club to beat the player down to pulp. Unfortunately turned more into a large Italian sausage that melted like butter as soon as you farted on it. The only indication that you were hit by one was the fact that your char would get slightly knocked back a few inches. It didn't do it justice by far....
Now Blizzard actually has the technology and engine to make destructible environments. They should use it to make the monsters feel ...."Monstrous". It's as plain as that. Make the ground shake, make it splinter, break tables, walls, drop chandeliers. As long as I can break a sweat while I'm fighting then I'll know Blizz did a good job.

::EDIT::
And about the chandeliers.. Couldn't you imagine a zombie running into a conveniently placed hook on the wall that was holding the thing up in the first place? Well thats what i was referring to anyway.

like i said before a long time ago... theres going to be armor that makes you immune to environmental damage.. and in hell mode theres going to be monsters immune to it as well:D
well this is only in my opinion no guaranteed facts....
If they don't make this a part of the game it would be extremely lame. Falling walls kill zombies, but they go right through the player? Not good.
Yeah i totally agree, one thing that disturbed me in the demo was that they kinda walked right through some bricks. Though that was probably just a glitch, say if a wall fell on a player, will we have falling down animations?

Having him raise his feet a bit on the bricks requires pretty complex model position computations... I could live without it. It does look sloppy, but it's not an easy thing to integrate.
I wonder... Is there Telekinesis as a skill in this one? I wonder if you can use it to do that. I think I actually read something like that somewhere... Dunno. But your character couldn't pick a thing up and swing it around since he/she has a weapon and/or a shield in his/her hands
