Kotaku cornered Jay Wilson for a short interview where finally the cat is out of the bag. The Barbarian is the only class that is returning in Diablo 3. The Necromancer is completely out of the equation according to Wilson because it was a flawless class. It has no room for improvement beyond what it already is.
Regardless, that doesn't mean we won't see Necromancers as NPCs. This is not official through the interview, but the city of Ureh is within Necromancer territory, thus inevitable not to see Necromancer NPCs. Richard A. Knaak told me a few days ago "Ureh is an integral part of the game." Two years ago, Knaak also told us during the public Q&A that Blizzard had very special plans for Zayl the Necromancer.
The Necromancer, he said, was simply a victim of his own success. He was just too well crafted as a character, something that Wilson's Blizzard design cohorts, current and former, likely don't mind hearing. Necro fans on the other hand, probably won't be too thrilled to learn of his disappearance, despite the Witch Doctor class's similarities.
Your day is ruined because you won't get to play as the paladin... even though you will still get to finally play DIII and be able to experience four entirely new classes?
Well, I am very excited. I love finding out about new classes, I am so glad that I won't be "rediscovering" any old classes (cause thats not quite as fun).
But this now really makes me wonder what the fifth class will be (other than ranger or mage).
ya, i really was hoping there would be a paladin. i found that that was my strongest class in D2, and played it all the time. However, i am looking forward to see all of the new classes Blizzard is adding to D3

well we have our barb which is like mdps
we have our WD which is like a necro/druid (IE summoner-caster)
as you said we will probably have a mage and ranged class
so our 5th should be another melee class that uses auras (IE templar/zealot/maybe a shapeshifting monkey)
I always thought that the chosen classes for Diablo 2 were perfect and that there was no room for improvement from the concept side. The only thing left for Blizzard to do is to come up with different classes that have similarities with the ones from Diablo 2.
The witch doctor, for example, is replacing the necromancer. Barbarian was left the same so we got 3 new classes to go...
1. We need at least 1 character that uses range martial weapons like bow, javalins or throwing knives/axes. I bet on a Hunter.
2. There must be another caster in D3 something like an elemental controlling wizard (the sorceresss from D2) and if not elements, maybe nature or such.
3. Since there won't be a paladin, there has to be some new character that uses the power of the gods and cast holy magic. We already know there is going to be a new type of damage: "Arcane". I'd say we gonna have a related class. Maybe a priest, cultist or something like that.

i never heard of an arcane damage?
and about the whole new classes im worried and excited. yes im excited to have 4 new classes and one that looks like fun to play and learn how to play them. but i am scared about one thing.
1.are they talking about just diablo 2? or the whole franchise. warrior rouge sorrcerer. cause id say to replace pally they say warrior. and amazon for rouge.
2. the reason this scares me. is cause the paladin base was he was a warrior for the high heavens in a way. and he did have healing powers. and i hope to fucking the angris council, and the lord of terror that they dont make a healer class. cause that would be terible.
Well I'm exited and dissapointed at the same time with this news, I am a long running pala-addict for D2 and mostly any other RPG around (even though they are nowere as good as how Blizzard portrayed them), and I will definately miss playing with such class, although I'm happy to see that there may be a new and exiting class on its way, maybe something more similar to the powers shown in the Sin War trilogy? Anyway, it's definately exiting to wonder what kinds of new powers are they bringing to this world (supposing they're not reusing most powers from D2). My only concern would be something silly, because I'm sure the staff is aware os this, which is keeping all classes solo-combat capable, that means that more focus on self serving powers instead of buffs, please! What made D2's paladin great was that all he had to give to the party was his aura, so I just hope they keep more or less the same scheme for all classes in D3, give each a single and distinct way to help group gameplay. Anyway looking forward to Blizzcon next month!
Too well crafted? So they decided to steal his skills and put them on a new character instead of tweaking the new skills to fit the Necromancer? What's the point in fucking up one great character to make another one who is very similar to him?
Does not compute.
OMG 2 MONGRELS AND A WALL ARE EXACTLY LIKE THE NECROMANCER LOASLDMAODMNFAINFU AIOFGIASEBFGUJSBNG
oh shit, no it isn't
blizzard brought the barb back because they knew kids like you existed and would QQ about no returning classes
I hope they are done trying to please you retards and start focusing on the game so I can play it before 2010

Whine all day, why don't you?
There aren't JUST five types of classes that there can be. Just because diablo 2 had 5 specific types of classes doesn't mean diablo III cannot have other kinds...
Sure, make all the classes you want. But when you make *new* classes why take the skills of the old class? If you're going to use the same skills, you might as well put the old class back.
Fanboys.
because it is revamping them
are you saying blizzard should never use the blizzard spell again?
if so, it would have never been in any diablo as it was in wc2
im worried... i like the barb but the witchdoctor was basically wows version cut and pasted... if they come out with "hunter" or ANYTHING at all that looks like a dwarf or bullshit elf... ima assassinate someone... thats not diablo...i know ima get flamed for this next one but... why couldnt you just keep the necro and give him the witchdoctors skills -.- the necro was a fucked up individual... thats what diablos all about... i mean a guy who summons dead stuff to help him out... and wears crazy armor... uses bones as wands adn heads of animals as shields? the witchdoctor just too colorful of an individual... maybe they could have called him "medecine man" oh well... let the flaming begin
I see that many people are claiming that if Blizzard are adding a class with a concept similiar to the necromancer, they should as well bring back the necromancer.
The Witch doctor is not an excuse for undead summoning class like you think. Of course, he does bring back the undead summoning concept, but unlike the necromancer, he doesn't have bone skills or spiritual missiles (at least not yet), and in addition, he can use fire alchemy and desease skills like the locust swarm. It's pretty funny but Blizzard are, in fact, making new classes for YOU, you who played the previous games and already experienced D1 and D2's classes, they bring new interesting characters for your sake.
I'm sure that the witch doctor is not the last class that comes back with a concept similiar to past classes, so I suggest you prepare yourselves.
Edit: Oh, here's another thing. So far, the only skills that were taken from the Necro to the Witch Doctor are "Horrify" and "Mass Confusion". 2 skills out of 7 that were revealed. That's less than 1/3 skills.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

in WoW they took the paladin charge skill and gave it to the warriors.
this kind of thinking is how the WOW designers work.
Design Diablo the Diablo way.
