Damn I thought jay wilson was the art director for some reason lol. Crap. But art directing is a BIG job regardless of who is doing it. Their the people that say, no I dont like that, or, Yes thats great. The interesting thing is, they cant tell this person that the art is going to stay the way it is or not. Because they are just designers, AKA Wilson is just a designer, he could be fired for saying something like that to an art director. So I guess this guy retired, Does not look like he quit because of the petition but who knows what this guys reasons are, he could be fed up with the art style period regardless of petitions or a higher-up could have aggrivated him, or hes going to make his own company, ect.ect. Point is... Art director is a big job, designers dont tell them what to do, its the opposite. So I hope whoever gets hired Whips these WoW designers in shape and fix the game up some.

Meh, I don't really care what the new art director does. As long as the big boys (Metzen and co.) are supervising, then I'm fine if it doesn't hold up another year before the release. The gameplay is the most important to me.
First of all people, retiring is different than quitting a job. You cannot work in the same field if you retire from it. If he quit then its either because hes sick of the art style or people there, or he is joining a new company. If he retired then hes done, plain and simple.
The interesting fact remains though that the job is open, and I am very suprised why someone INSIDE blizzard has not been promoted to it, and that they are hiring and outside source for such a big job. Whoever gets it though, hopefully they can make diablo 3 better than what they showed us so far.

Who says you can't work in a job you have retired from? It's not like retirement is a life sentence. Ever hear of people coming out of retirement? People retire all the time and come back. There intent is usually to never go back, but that is not always the case.
Maybe he quit because he is burned out? Maybe he quit so he could be with his family more? Maybe he quit so he could start a new company with some close friends? There are plenty of reasons a person would quit, and hating your co-workers or the actual game are only some of tte few.
Maybe no current artist on the inside is capable of taking a role where you need to be a leader? Directing an art team, especially a big one, is no easy task and perhaps no one atm was currently looking for the added responsibility. Perhaps they are just looking for new blood for the hell of it. All we can do is speculate.
No matter what happens the direction will not change, so don't be surprised when it doesn't happen. The lead designer has say over the overall design of the game and Jay has already stated numerous times that they will not change the design. Sure you may see some graphical change, but that happens as development on a game progresses.
It doesnt work like that. Your retirement plans go into affect immediately when you retire. and there are a lot of rules involving retirement plan money.

Look it is a big deal and what not that the lead art director needs to be replaced, but so what? They could put pablo picasso in that job and the end result will be no different.
You see, everyone's got a boss, and so does a lead art-director.
The basis for artwork (i'm beginning to hate that word) in D3 has already been set. Approved. Built.
By approved, i mean, the guys on top (morhaime, etc) already went with what D3 currently looks like! We shouldn't worry about change...
I can see it already. Everyone is gonna blame the game getting darker in Act 3, 4, and 5 on the new art director. Although its already been said that the game will get progressively darker.
You are an intelligentsia and a prophet, mister.

The art Director is gone, now they are getting a replacment.
This means nothing, the art is done, they wont change anything, and if they do, they will only make the game darker and more sinister.
Blizzard wont go stepping on toes about this art and graphics issue, people have made so many petitions about it, that its highly unlikely that they will make the game look worse..
If they bring in some fresh meat for art design, many of you will agree with me, that 2 art designers biulding a game, is a whole lot better than 1 art designer.
That goes for just about anything.
Cheers.

When I sat down with lead “Diablo III” designer Jay Wilson last week to talk about the team’s design choices and his thoughts on fan-altered screenshots, he told me that Morrisroe was the one who spearheaded the franchise’s design changes. Specifically, I asked who we should blame for the rainbows. Wilson said: “If you want to blame anyone for the rainbows, you’d blame our art director Brian [Morrisroe]. Because Brian is more the person who drove the art style into where it is. But it didn’t really come directly from him. What he brought to the art team was concepts and ideas — the idea of contrast, the idea of using color more, the idea of going for a more stylized look. Because what we were looking at before was more photo-realistic. Really trying to get something that looks like a painting — that was his goal. But the actual result of that came from the art team. And a lot of the environment guys, and some of the texture artists, they’ve all kind of chipped in to try and get the feel of something that was very unique.”
When I read this I thought It's good that he Quit, or as I believe got sacked and was told to say he leave on his own account. Blizzard doesn't like to show weakness, they wanna look firm in their decisions without getting swayed by the fans outcry.
Who in his right mind leaves Blizz in the middle of such major project to build his own company with the state of the market today. Couldn't he wait some more? who knows, They should interview him and not Blizz about it, maybe he'll spill the beans.
And If he leaves in the middle it's not going to help his resume
Anyway ppl Ignore to what he "contribute" to the art as stated above. It can't be bad to get new perspective to stuff after all his good doings /sarcastic off
Why not elevate someone within Blizzard to the job if it's not a major role still? If the art direction is completely done with why not to...? The answer I vote for that it's not over & done with, expect some changes.

Here is the deal, all of you fanboys will get pissed but oh freakin well, i have played the diablo franchise since 6 months after the first one came out, and i know a bit about the development of video game, so i can thoroughly say that many things in the game are destined to change, however......
!!!!HIS QUITTING HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FANBOY PETITIONS THAT SOME OF YOU THOUGHT WOULD MAKE A POINT!!!!!!!!!
Here's an idea, unless you want to sign up and program and code this game into completion or help with the Art Direction, hows about you Shut your pie hole?
I happen to know that the lighting of this game was done bright in the beginning to give the game depth. That way when evil is let loose it REALLY has a effect, plus this game is starting in daylight, the others began at night.
Maybe we should all wait for more than the first maps to be created before we criticize.
Spouting "fanboy" and demanding people to "shut their pie hole" makes you look far more immature, uncivilized, and ignorant than most any of the people on this forum who'd like to see an art style changed.

will armor shrink to their normal and reasonable size as the game progresses, along with stone statues getting to look more serious and mean? will the color actually make some sense as the game progresses unlike the green in tristram cathedral?
the petition also points these thing out, its not that simple
i thought fanboys are people who belive blindless in game comapanies if they were some almighty god
i think blizzard is just a bunch of talented humans that can take some advice sometimes

Well that's the thing, should we be saying something now and letting those changes get implemented the first time around, or should we wait till things are too late and too much of a bother to alter in later stages of development.
If people are going to "shut our pieholes", we'd at least like to hear something from some of the developers. If they said something like: "Your opinions have been noted. We're experimenting with our artwork based on some of the suggestions by the fans and we'll try to make the best decision on how to proceed with the artwork with the project."
If they managed to at least acknowledge some of our requests to some extent, then that would probably make people feel a little bit easier. Instead what happened is a critique of some of our photo shopped images, using some talking points which I don't consider to be completely truthful.
Personally I think him stepping down is most likely due to some internal conflict with some members of the art staff and the management. It may have been rolling around some his justification of his choices, maybe not, but I do think there was some sort of issue that led to his resignation. For an important title like this, it's very unusual for an upper level developer to leave at this stage in the title (usually it's either very early or very late, nowhere in between).
My main point first: It is highly unlikely he would quit in the middle of production, so im voting he got asked to leave. As for Blizz already stating they wont change the art direction and claiming its going to be "progressive," I say Put up or shut up. What I mean is either show us some screen shots to qualm our fears and prove us wrong, or STFU and admitt that you all have WoW on your brains, slap yourself, and then start gettting it right. Thats right, I just told Blizz to STFU. Im calling you out blizzard - you have left nothing but the feeling of betrayal in my gut, and while some who claim to be fans bow at your feet over what looks like WoW and TQ had a bastard child, us true fans who have had the testicular fortitude to look you in the eye and say your wrong now await nothing less than your appology for this cruel farse you call Diablo 3. How dare you Blizz. How DARE you! Blizzard needs to remember that a ruler is only as good as his followers are loyal - I have the very distinct feeling that if Blizz screws this up, they may not tumble, but they will slide a notch or two on the Respect-O-Meter in the industry. I would rather not have Diablo 3 at all than almost have it.
