the petition against the artwork has nearly 55,000 signatures, whereas the one for the artwork is just shy of 2,000.
This would mean more if there were only 57,000 Diablo fans. As it stands, I think the art direction is terrific and that the Photoshop desatuarizations are crap, but I have not signed any petition for the artwork and won't. I don't need to. Blizzard has said multiple times now that the art style is set.

Despite what the 'Art Director' says
I had to highlight this. While I am not here to challenge your mad editing skills (I don't know you and it would be foolish to make assumptions about you), I'll note that I think Gears of Wars is boring to look at. The graphics are drawn extremely well, but everything is gray and brown. I'll pass on two-toned worlds. It's just not my style. I am able to experience suspense, drama, and tension even with a bright purple tapestry in the room.
Hes nuts, why wouldn't he wait until after Diablo 3 is finished and be able to say he worked on Diablo 3 and is swimming in cash? ;/
People were probably sending him and his family death threats. It's really sad to think about how insane some 'fans' are when it comes to games. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to be a fanatic.
You are as ignorant as you are a selfish arsehole.... one day you'll grow up I guess. Is there a way to ignore users on this forum? like their posts just don't show up to you?
However if they do completely change the direction of the art, the game will probably be delayed by another year.... Not to mention theres the possibility it gets worse.
You say he should grow up when you obviously get raged about him saying something you disagree with, i think it is you who should grow up.
changing the art direction of anything will take a long time. anyone who says differently has no idea what theyre talking about.
this is not changing the picture of xyz. this is changing the whole direction ,pallet, and just about everything.
if i was the lead art director ....receiving so much criticism would take quite a toll on confidence in abilities and talent. blizz may be making a wise move to protect their own...or although i doubt it....maybe they really are changing their art direction
How's a new art director going to make things "worse"? That would imply that things are already bad. And as I see it, that game looks damned fine to me. Besides, it's too late to change the art direction. And I'm sure they're more than halfway done. They've been working on the game for 7 years at most. 2 years at the least. I would assume at least 3 years, personally, since they designed their engine from scratch.
They've already said nothing is going to change and yet still petitioners continue.
I think they've grown tired and weary of responding when they've already written it in stone.
Giving petitioners hope means no more complaints will arise and so they won't have anything to respond to, therefore not having a seperate attack of "They don't listen to the 'fans.'"
Whatever the reason is, if this is true, it definitely is not about changing the art.

You don't make an official statement to millions and then regress on a whim.
A refute to my reasoning of the hiring being false most likely and sensibly would be 'Right, so they post an ad to hire when they're not hiring.'
To this I say - who says they won't find every applicant 'undesirable' for their needs?
They don't need to write an official statement to why they don't want to hire you.

Maybe he was unhappy with what Blizzard was happy with?
As the art director he could of changed this. He has a lot of say over what the game looks like.
Besides I doubt that was the case or they would of said "artistic differences". He probably just got greedy and wants to have a money fountain in his back yard.
That's not entirely true. Most of what people are asking for are very simple changes that wouldn't have much bearing on the release date. I can actually see them using these methods to please 80% of the people calling for some amount of change:
1- Adjust the lighting style to use less saturated hues and use an analogous color scheme that uses only a few hues to establish mood. Adjust the lighting radius/falloff and remove certain lights entirely to reduce the diffused lighting style. It's also likely that most of the maps they have currently will have the lighting tweaked anyway. All it really takes is selecting map elements and typing in different numbers, it's not that time consuming.
2- Despite what the 'Art Director' says, a large portion of the photoshop edits can be reproduced easily by using a fullscreen post processing filter, much like what you would see in Gears of War. You can even link the processing settings depending on which environment you're in the further enhance the look and feel of the game. It's not a difficult feature and any graphics programmer worth their salt can probably introduce this feature without too much fuss.
3- Low texture detail can be solved by using a shader effect called 'detail textures'. Blizzard has it's own shader programmers and it's a simple blend effect that needs to be added to their materials and it would allow their map editors to overlay a variety of noise, stone, sand and grass like details over existing textures without much of a performance hit. (ex: http://www.radioactive-software.com/gangwar/DetailTextureCompare.jpg )
4- Some people have complained about the look of some of the armors, and all it really takes it some minor vertex edits and scaling of their existing assets to please their fans. The rigging and textures of these objects would not need to be redone, in fact it would likely take about 10 minutes per asset to put in some minor aesthetic tweaks.
Sounds like you know your ABCs and work on the 3D industry. You should submit your resume at resumes@blizzard.com or go to SIGGRAPH where Blizzard will be hiring.
Why someone that works in BLIZZARD wants to get out? Participate of the best games programming it's too wonderfull to get out!
whatever!
I'm happy about the way DIABLO 3 is going. A lot of new stuff to see for hours and hours, but i'm afraid about the time we'll have to wait until D3 release, especialy after this art director change.
Now that they've opened the hell gate(sorry for this), and we saw how the heaven shall tremble, it's deadly take a long waiting period.
First of all, even the Art Director is a subject to the whims of his superiors; He can only act in the extent the others allow him to - he'd have a say, but they'd be able to run him over, and any artist worth their salt wouldn't take that for all too long.
Yes they ultimately have the say, but I'm sure the last thing they wanted was to have to hire a new art director, and why would of he of went along with the art direction for THIS long and then suddenly get mad? The gameplay trailer was released a month and a half ago.
Second.. do you REALLY think Actiblizz would cite "artistic differences" in the current climate, if their Art Director upped and left because Actiblizz insisted on a snuttified D3?
I'd hope they'd tell the truth instead of just saying he wanted to make a company.
An entire company is not going to change a damn thing for one Mr. The New Asshole.
He may provide suggestions, such as anyone else on the team, and they'll be democratically considered.
The difference is I doubt he'll slam his keyboard and start a petition when he's disagreed with.

Hope this doesn't delay release too much.
Pretty lame move to quit in the middle of a project just to start your own company.
We need someone who's tough enough for D3.
Blizzard isn't a person but a team, and the team needs people who are fit for the job, so hopefully it will bring nothing but good things :).

maybe in nothing?
i hope so!
Except that they won't keep him around if he can't adapt to the style they want.
There are plenty of art directors they could hire that would be more than happy to work with what they want.
