Ok guys I did something either smart or stupid. I wrote Knaak an e-mail to try and finally find out what he ment by upturned. Hopefully he will get back to me soon.
I can only hope you neglected to mention anything about the artwork in your email. There should be nothing to persuade his answer other than what he envisioned when writing the book.

He pasted what he wrote.
Hello Mr. Knaak, I am a member of www.diablofans.com recently there has been a huge discussion having to do with what exactly you ment when you described Imperius' upturned sword on his chest. I am writing to you to try to get to the bottom of how the sword should be shown on his chest. If the sword is upturned like you had wrote, should blade be pointing towards Imperius' head or should it be pointing towards his legs? Please get back to me on this there is a huge thread on this topic and I want to lay it to rest. thanks!
"I was reading book X earlier and I got to the description of Imperius where it says that on his chest was an upturned sword. I didn't exactly know what this meant so I tried to figure it out online and nothing I came up with was any help at all. I thought that maybe I would email you for further explanation. Is an upturned sword vertical with the blade point up, or the hilt up? Or is it horizontal with the blade edge upward? Could it possibly be something else?
I know it seems like a minuscule detail, but I like to imagine what is happening while I'm reading and for some reason this is really bothering me. Any help you have will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, your-name-here"
-I used book X because I don't know the actual book name.
-The letter is designed to make him feel you're genuinely interested in this detail and that the answer is the only thing that will put it to rest.
-I didn't mention anything about this site, or the Diablo3 announcement to lead him away from the fact that its being discussed in the artwork. Maybe I don't know about it.
-Using your real name will make him feel you've established a connection to him and his writings; he'll feel more inclined to answer.
Adding "Hi, Mr. Knaak" as an opening line would've helped too. I wouldn't have used his first name though.

But he's not going in to the Burning Hells to work for them. That's why I say outcast- he's for neither side.
He can be consider as an agent of Chaos, but not an agent of the Burning Hell.
As far as we know, Burning Hell is just one face of Chaos, and the High Heaven is just one face of Order. That's why they fought each other. Neither side are necessary good, its just so happen Order seem preferably compare to Chaos aka they you less. That's why alot of the Mortal of Sanctuary side with them.
Just wish Knaak lay that sword thing to rest....:D
I think it would be awsome if Imperius was the true threat to sanctuary I mean the name sounds like a threat I WANT THIS DREAM TO BE A REALITY!!!!
P.S All the things I dream of do become reality. I dreamt of George bush being president (IDK why but oh well shoot me :P) I dreamnt that Diablo3 would be announced. I dreamt that in 20012 a meteor would hit earth and after that we hide underground and become creatures of the underground

mabey blizzard made the armour though wrong not knowing what an upturned sword looks like lol.
Take off the [url] of the links or they wont work. Its late ill image shack them tomarrow.
What I'm 100% confident in is Imperius casts Tyrael out of Heaven.
No I think it is more or so along the lines of Tyrael is already in the cathedral then Imperius is the meteor...then smashes through the cathedral ground and ascends out of the hole.

This makes more sense than Imperius casting Tyrael out of heaven because it has been scrutinized to the very last detail and confirmed that in the pics of the angel or whatever on fire the background scenery IS the inside of the Tristram chapel. Which would mean that whoever that is, is really the meteor.
Daemaro, I know I did a lengthy post about if that really is what an upturned sword would look like. Although I disagree with the imagery, I do agree that what we're looking at is Imperius coming down from the heavens to meet Tyrael.
HOWEVER
I don't think that the meteor crash images and the angel coming up are very close as far as placing them on a timeline. We can clearly see Leah looking down the hole the meteor created. Also, Tyrael is the angel on the blizzard.com/diablo3 website, and he's in the Tristram chapel (notice the chandelier in the background). If those 2 events were close together it would mean that Tyrael and Leah are in the chapel at the same time, then Imperius shows up. What would Tyrael want with a little girl?
I agree with you sparks, on that of which the event at which all this happens may not be in the correct sequences exactly. I think Tyrael might actually be there to either talk to cain or talk to both cain and leah. I have come to the conclusion that Leah is more than just Cain's "Nursemaid"....I think she either might be a relative, or a apprentice or a reletive that is Cain's apprentice...It would make sence for Cain to pass on his knowledge considering he is so old, who knows when he could kick the bucket. Maybe Cain knows his time to go is near? Let me know what you think...I know I am not a official blizz speculater but it sounds about right.
I don't know about all that, all I'm saying is that I think Imperius casts Tyrael out of Heaven. That may not be the scene we're seeing but someone falls as a comet, and its obvious it wasn't of their own choice or they wouldn't pound through a building about at least 7 levels below ground before stopping.
An angel coming from Heaven would be able to just stop himself instead of smashing through the chapel.
Of course Imperius wouldn't care but I also don't get the feeling he'd just want to aimlessly crash through things.
So to me it makes more sense whoever is in the comet is being thrown from heaven, into the chapel, and many storied downward. I just think it's Tyrael.
So you think the meteor is Imperius casting Tyrael out of heaven, but the fiery-ish angel thats inside the tristram chapel is Imperius?
Yup that's what I think.
I'm not 100% convinced that the picture of Imperius is in the chapel though. Looks kind of like it but ehhh, I mean I'd expect Heaven to look like that also. All stone and cathedralish. What looks like organ pipes in the back of one of the Imperius pictures though kind of makes me think its the church though. I'm not even sure those are organ pipes though.
Here Sparks, read this, I posted it earlier on this thread but I guess you missed it...tell me what you think-I agree with you sparks, on that of which the event at which all this happens may not be in the correct sequences exactly. I think Tyrael might actually be there to either talk to cain or talk to both cain and leah. Yeah I saw that, must've overlooked the part where you asked for my opinion.
I'm no lore expert like some people here. I haven't read any of the books, so all I know beyond the game's info is what I've read on this forum.
That being said, I don't see any reason for Cain to not think that he may be dying soon. He was old in Diablo1 and I don't know the time frame between 1 and 2 but 2 and 3 is apparently 20 years, he's getting on up there in age.
On the other hand, Sanctuary is clearly not "Earth" and therefore may or may not be limited by its boundaries such as age. I read somewhere on here that the average life span in Sanctuary is 30 to 40 years (something like that). Which would mean Cain is more than we think he is, or hes got some wicked voodoo magic going on.
Its hard to really say whats going on with Cain. But seeing as they've brought in someone else that appears to be a follower I would assume that he is dying. People have talked a lot about how Cain called her a "Nursemaid" but I think its very clear that shes more than that to him. If she was just some random nursemaid then there wouldn't be all this artwork, Blizzard wouldn't have confirmed her identity, you know?
For the most part, I agree, but I can't be too certain of anything really at this point. We'll need more artwork that matches up with other artworks, or more story in Cain's journal, something.

You should've said something along the lines of..
