I mean, what the consequences of this corruption? draw worldstone powers and become stronger, or weaken the nephalem?
The hells wanted the nephalem to help their fight against the heavens, but without the worldstone, nephalem will become useless without their power.
Iknow that without the worldstone to defend the sanctuary, the hells could invade it. But for what?
Well they said at the lore panel that the angels and demons would fight for control of the Worldstone and use it to create other worlds. So maybe in order for him to control it he needed to corrupt it.
I think he wanted to use it to keep out angels more than anything.
its been hinted that the worldstone isnt really "destroyed" just phased out of the dimension of sanctuary... and they (blues/devs) have posed the question "can you destroy the worldstone?" The worldstone kept the nephalem and heaven and hell form reaching full power. So getting rid of the worldstone, lets hell have some more power...and it creates a very weak place in the world, perfect for an invasion army from hell...

What we've learned from then is that the reason no one has invaded is because there was a truce between Heaven and Hell that both sides were intent on keeping. Until now that is when Azmodan has decided it's worth breaking.
This of course still doesn't explain why Baal wanted to corrupt the Worldstone and marginalizes the story of D2 even more, unless my proposed theory in that thread is correct and the truce was somehow made more manifest somehow by being tied to the Worldstone.
Going by this idea, the pact was something both sides wanted, but the Worldstone physically maintained it (to some extent as well). Once the Worldstone was destroyed, both sides still wanted to maintain the pact (hence why nothing's happened for 20 years) but with it's protection gone, there's now room for ignoring it. Which Azmodan now does.

I've read second hand accounts of the lore panel, where it is stated that the Worldstone was used by both Heaven and Hell to create worlds. Yet, in my understanding, the Worldstone was unique to Sanctuary. At the least, Sanctuary was initially hidden from Heaven and Hell (hence the name), so if it ALSO contained the Worldstone, Heaven and Hell should have noticed it missing.
Is this a retcon, or is there any explanation for this?
Also, I always thought Baal was trying to corrupt the Worldstone to allow Hell to invade Sanctuary. I guess Phrozen's article points out all these inconsistencies. Hopefully D3 clears this all up.

The explanation is that the Worldstone was stolen, and what happened was that Inarius and Lilith, perhaps with the aid of their rebels, perhaps just Inarius, warped it into another dimension. In this dimension the power of the Worldstone was funnelled into hiding Sanctuary, as well as creating the world itself. So both Heaven and Hell realized it was missing, but neither side had any idea of what had happened. This is explained in the Book of Cain.

I'm rather curious about "the other pact", which is only very briefly mentioned in The Veiled Prophet:
His voice seeping with satisfaction, Mephisto murmured, "And the cavern and the find within?"
Imperius shifted as if angry. Tyrael replied, FOR WHAT SHALL BE NEEDED TO BE DONE THERE, ANOTHER PACT MUST BE MADE.
To which Mephisto agrees, and the narrative moves on with no further mention of this "other" pact.
I've been digging, but I can't find a thing about it other than there was some other mysterious pact which has never been explained...yet. Since The Book of Cain makes it clear that the Worldstone is much, much more than even the novels indicated, I can't help but wonder if we will learn of it in D3. Thoughts?
