I'm honestly terrible with the lore, and don't know much about it.
I was thinking of how in some movies, the same bad guy is brought back 50 times and it loses its flavor.
I think the D3 expansion should have us kill diablo once and for all, OR (i'll get back to this)
what if another demon took over. what if diablo is finally out of the picture and the other demon can claim his power and control hell.
(getting back to it), what if on the way to killing diablo, another demon slays him and absorbs his power. Diablo still exists in some form, but another creature wields his strength.
I've honestly always viewed Diablo as the "dumb/strong" one of the prime-evils. meph seems like the smart one who is weaker, and diablo is just his brute force pet.
I think it would be interesting if meph would've somehow came to power. (but if i remember, his soul stone was destroyed)..so who knows..

I'll put this in the simplest way possible. All of the lore we have for the universe is from the standpoint of humans. And as you may know, in that universe they don't know much.
That being said, there is a lot of stuff we don't know and there is plenty of room to go on without Diablo specifically. But personally I wouldn't like it.

i have 2 arguments.
a) I love diablo, its an original story, its an awesome creature, and i would love to have 50 games and kill him in each one of those..
but then again, how many times is too many, before we've slain diablo more than we can count

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
Well I recall something about the evils going back into the nether when they die, so when Diablo died in Diablo 2 he went to that place. And somehow he came back in a different form.
Don't know that much but perhaps Diablo is just the spirit of some demon that can reposses as many demons as he wants. And when he posses that demon it becomes his body and will mutate to his liking. If he got beaten by ranged attacks he will mutate his body to be more resilient against ranged attacks and something.
The only way to truly defeat diablo is to destroy that link between the nether and sanctuary etc.
And you know this how? We have no clue what happened to Diablo. what you say is possible but the fact is we have no clue.

Just to throw it out there, Diablo is most definitely not the "Brute Force and stupid guy" of the Prime Evils. Mephisto is the eldest and thus "most wise". Mephisto is usually the ones who communicates with the angels about any affairs. The exception is when things go down in Sanctuary, it is Diablo whom is responsible and represents the three Prime Evils there. Diablo is the Lord of Terror, to use his title properly - he would have to be cunning, and not just blatant brute force. This is all opinionated though. Of course, the brute force Prime Evil would have to be the Lord of Destruction, and apparently he comes across as dumb to if you check out some quotes by Astrogha. Generally though, I think they're all quite intelligent and smart in one way or another, after all they [i]are[/i the Prime Evils of hell!
Also, it is definitely possible that the world of Sanctuary can continue you in future games, and possibly even be titled as "Diablo", but as someone stated already, Diablo himself is likely gone for good after diabloIII. Like we could have a game where Kabraxis comes in to play? I mean, in "The Black Road", he was credited to be feared by even the three Prime Evils. So, who knows? *shrug*

what if another demon took over. what if diablo is finally out of the picture and the other demon can claim his power and control hell.
It seems unlikely to me, for the sole reason that the Three/Angiris are indicated to be eternal in the sense that they've been there since the beginning. If no demon manage to smite Diablo yet, it doesn't seems likely any demon can.
What is more likely to happen is that any game after D3 will be some kind of MMO, with player never getting to face down the Three, or some other game that doesn't require the death of the Three to satisfy as end bosses.
I've honestly always viewed Diablo as the "dumb/strong" one of the prime-evils. meph seems like the smart one who is weaker, and diablo is just his brute force pet.
All evidence points towards Baal being the dumbest of the Three, with Diablo being the natural leader. Have a look at this thread if you're interested.

Which you base on one exchange in the Veiled Prophet, and during that conversation it is implied that Diablo should be the one to do the negotiating, not Mephisto.

I guess it's possible. The lore so far does not seem to support it. Then again, the lore so far hasn't really suffered much human intervention. Perhaps humanity will end it somehow with their latent powers.

Maybe we have to kill Diablo in the deepest depths of the Abyss itself? I mean, if he dies in the place he is always reborn in, then where else would he be spawned? Or possibly when we play we have to stay in the game forever and camp the Abyss and kill him every 5 minutes, when he respawns? That would be.... horrible? Amazing drops I bet, though o.o

I like this idea! You KNOW you can hear Cain's voice telling you that "we must descend into the ancient Abyss which Diablo's essence resides and vanquish him for time and all eternity"
Can you imagine what that atmosphere would be like? It would make all the little girls that have been saying Diablo is not dark enough cry in a corner soaking their little panties.
And you know this how? We have no clue what happened to Diablo. what you say is possible but the fact is we have no clue.
I wouldn't necessarily say we have NO clue. I think we can make some good guess based on what we know about lore. It's at least debatable what happened to Diablo at the end of D2.
I believe since his plan failed and he and and his Soulstone was destroyed, that this did something to banish his essence into a realm that is neither Heaven, Hell, or Sanctuary. Some kind of abyss that is just a place of nothingness. I also believe Baal's and Mephisto's souls ended up here too. In the darkness they merged together just enough to gather strength and form. Somehow perhaps they propelled themselves with enough force to exit the abyss. If they landed back in Hell then they were probably extremely weak at this point. But I think they were still merged together in a single form and I think that's what we saw in the trailer with Diablo taking the predominant form in the middle. And that's all just my theory but I base some of it on what I think Soulstones are kind of supposed to do. They don't just seem like prisons for the soul but can also work as anchors. You don't need the anchor to begin with in order to exist in physical form. But once your soul is imprisoned inside it, you are bound to that Soulstone.
I think Baal continued existing in physical form because of his powerful host, but he eventually needed the Soulstone to maintain his essence within Tal Rasha. Now that the Prime Evils are free of the abyss, they are no longer bound to any Soulstone, but perhaps they have changed into something new as well.
But yeah, eventually you should be able to kill off Diablo without him ever coming back. To continue bringing him back would be kind of disingenuous I think. Even for a fictional universe, you can only contrive so many plot devices to make the impossible possible before fans get tired of it. People also wanna feel like some things they do have some permanence. I can only imagine the frustration of comic book fans sometimes who just want their beloved character to die a dignified death instead reincarnating over and over again into a less and less cool superhero.
So, Baal was destroyed and shortly thereafter, the Worldstone itself was destroyed! With the Worldstone destroyed, Baal's Soulstone, which is a part of the Worldstone, was rendered inoperable, which is the same as it were been destroyed! Now, Diablo's and Mephisto's Soulstones were destroyed at the Hellforge because there, their souls could enter Hell, or the Abyss of which we know nothing! But, if Baal's Soulstone was destroyed (rendered inoperable) in Sanctuary, where did his soul left? Is it possible that the spirit of Baal roamed Sanctuary for 20 years, and that it's a high chance we will see him in Diablo III?
I think the Soulstones had to be destroyed in Hell just cause that's the only place where they could be utterly destroyed. But perhaps it was also to release their souls back into Hell. Cause I suppose if you found a place in Sanctuary to destroy the stones then yeah maybe their souls would still be somewhere on Sanctuary. As far as Baal's Soulstone, I personally believed it was destroyed when the Soulstone was. Whether it was a part of the Worldstone once or not, I think the explosion of the World Stone destroyed everything in its blast radius hence the Worldstone Crater. It's like, the Hellforge is the most plausible place to destroy the stones, but one other way perhaps would be to destroy the stones with the Worldstone explosion.
I think a lot of these details the game developers just left up for heresay and conjecture and at the time, the writers weren't even sure about everything. I did find it kind of frustrating in Act 5 how no one mentions Baal's Soulstone. Cain and Tyrael were always talking about how you needed to destroy the Soulstones at Hellforge but they don't really stress any importance over doing the same with Baal's.
On the other hand, a lot of people claimed that Baal didn't have his Soulstone with him when we fought him! I think it is clear that he had the Soulstone with him
Mm, I always believed he had it on him when he died.
There is nothing official stating that the Soulstone is a part of the Worldstone. Also who said that the Worldstone loses its power when it is destroyed? I'm sure that the shards are quite powerful. I don't think the Soulstones, if they were parts of the Worldstone, would lose their power.
You're right. I mean, we don't know for sure that the source of their power is the Worldstone, but you could understand why some of us would wish to see the two as related. Tyrael had access to the Worldstone the whole time, and it seemed he needed some kind of powerful source to create something that could imprison the Prime Evils.
We don't know why Diablo's and Mephisto's soulstones were destroyed at the Hellforge. Maybe because they were forged there, maybe because of your reason, we don't know.
I definitely don't think they were forged their. I just think it's more like cause the Hellforge is used for creating instruments of Hell. So an instrument of Heaven such as the Soulstone it would have the destructive power necessary for completely breaking the Soulstones.
There is nothing official stating that the Soulstone is a part of the Worldstone.
Tyrael's speech when you kill Diablo and enter the red portal to act V:
Now, Baal's army is searching for the Worldstone, the ancient source of all the Soulstones and their power, while leaving behind a wake of destruction.
While technically not specifying that the soulstones are actual shards of the worldstone, how else could they be reasonably related? Occam's Razor.
Praise be to the Light! You have accomplished the impossible! Diablo and Mephisto have been banished back into the Black Abyss that spawned them, and the corrupted Soulstones are no more.
At least there's a bit of a Black Abyss in there!
Yeah. But we still have the issue of Baal's soulstone, which doesn't seem to have been destroyed at the Hellforge. So once again, why is the Hellforge so relevant?
It's like, the Hellforge is the most plausible place to destroy the stones, but one other way perhaps would be to destroy the stones with the Worldstone explosion.
That actually seems reasonable enough. What that does to the soul remains up for debate, but since the soulstones originated from the Worldstone, it does make sense.
