Yep, its been confrimed for a while that it's diablo. The barbarian statue is standing on top of the same exact creature in the cinematic, and the description said "the barbarian stands atop a conquered diablo..."
So, although I didn't actually see a definitive update or news flash from Blizzard, I think there is enough evidence in the similarities between the demon named Diablo in the diorama and the thing in the trailer to at least pose some conjecture. Or questions, as the case may be.
1st: How in the burning hells did Diablo escape the abyss? Did he get assistance (ie the diablo wiki explanation of the ubers
2nd: If Diablo and his brothers just pop out of the abyss after 20 years (practically nothing in Great Conflict Time) what was the point of smashing the soulstones anyway? If he's back so quickly wouldn't it have been better just to go bury the soulstones again (last time it took them about 300 years to physically manifest)?
I guess the real point here is Blizzard just threw up one mess of a hurdle lore-wise. Guess I gotta buy the game to see how they clear it.

When killing two birds with one stone, there is a question that often floats in to my mind: Where the hell did I put that shotgun?
There is an important distinction between poetic justice and irony. Poetic justice kills a homicidal maniac with his own gun. Irony makes a homicidal maniac's gun drip water out the barrel.

Now seriously, I still doubt that's really Diablo, firstly because I remember an interview with Jay where he said they weren't even sure if Diablo was to appear in D3 yet, so how did they release an image of him in their official trailer when they are not even sure the character will be making an appearance?
Secondly, the description of that figurine says: "NOT FINAL PRODUCT", basically that implies its subject to changes and thus nothing there is definite and there's no backing that the people who did that description are 100% sure on the nature of the demon so if Blizz gives us a definitive artwork for Diablo which is different from what we suppose now, either the figurine or it's description will be altered.

The whole "Uber Diablo" shit isn't cannon. Blizzard confirmed that.
Fair enough, but that doesn't mean the description can't be inaccurate when saying it's Diablo's head there. And please can you give me a link with the confirmation?
true. if you noticed. the screen shots taken for d3 to let us drool on and compare it to d2 screen shots [ oh yes i know the graphics are a quantum leap between each other] but compare by the lightings, look and what do they make you feel..D3 screenshots looks more fake, cartoony. as in more of W.O.W. looks. no more the real looking lightings that own our asses in d2. so i wouldn't be surprised that, this 3 headed newb. ( oops. omg diablo gonna pwn me.! ) would be diablo. ( die diablo! FEEL THE FURY OF THE PALADIN's BLESSED HAMMERS *laughs manically*....................*coughs*.................*dies due to lack of oxygen*)
Dauroth- I'm going to try to clarify your point a little.
First, a still of the demon in the teaser trailer.
Now, an image of the Overthrown diorama, with a demon specifically named as Diablo
"Overthrown" depicts a mighty barbarian atop the conquered Diablo, shouting towards the High Heavens in vicious triumph.
There are a couple of distinct characteristics that the two demons share.
1. Horns starting just above the eyes and curving up and back, with a branch and distinctive end caps.
2. A pair of fangs in the upper jaw, making a single point.
3. Nose slits almost level with the eye sockets.
4. A scaly texture to the horns, and a pronounced set of scales on top of the head. (look just above the glowing cross-thing and beside the barbarians foot)
Would Blizzard allow two distinct demons to look that similar? Absolutely not. I rest my case.

Personally I believe we are seeing Diablo in that video, there has never been a doubt in my mind. The general face structure and color scheme suggests nothing other than him - and even if other evils appear in this one, they're not going to make a Diablo game that doesn't have him in it at all.
Secondly it is a great representation of evil to me, much more intimidating and demonic than previous versions (humanoid, cartoony dragon-like thing). The cinematics are beautiful and the gameplay looks exciting to me. I'm pretty curious about what class will take the place of a Paladin though, I like playing knight type characters.
Now I can't help but wonder, could Tyrael actually be Belial? I mean he's connected to many aspects of the story and I imagine the lord of lies could make himself appear to be angellic. Then consider the story so far - perhaps the war in Hell was just a distraction, all the while the Prime Evils were still in control and were attempting to corrupt the Worldstone the entire time. Now that they have, and their souls have been put back in Hell, they'd be free to take all their armies and crush Sanctuary. As for Azmodan I don't even remember what he's the lord of, but I'm sure he'll have something up his sleeve as well.
Pretty well established that that demon is Diablo (with the diorama descriptions and what not) . Moreover on examination of the cinematic, those things on the sides are just mouths on his shoulders, not really 'heads' - it's a more of an 'abomination' feel to it- making Diablo look a hell of a lot cooler than he used to.
Is it just me...or does this actually look like a very cunning combination of Mephisto, Baal and Diablo? It's a little difficult to see the resemblance of all three...but it might not be that farfetched a speculation...
What do you folks think?
Going to throw this focus down to the The Triune thread that's got the same vibe - didn't catch that one...sorry.
If it is a new form I hope he can blow fire out of his mouth and spread REAL terror into the hearts of the players. I think it would have been cool not to reveal what diablo looked like and when he cmae you you are like "WTF IS THAT!!!! OMFG FIRE BREATHING THREE HEADED BIG D!!!! RUN"

I doubt that is the last boss. I dont think they would show him in the trailer because that would ruin the surprise! Maybe it is the 3 brothers and then the expansion has imperious or something.

Where the hell was this post 75 pages ago LOL. Okay, if this doesn't quell the "it isn't diablo" argument I think it is a lost cause. I'm sold. It's diablo for sure. Oh wait what about those other heads/mouths/vaginas whatever they are???? *sarcasm

LOL!
Well it's similar.. but nah.. it's from other trilogy..
1st: How in the burning hells did Diablo escape the abyss? Did he get assistance (ie the diablo wiki explanation of the ubers )? Have his brothers been freed?

So what you're telling us is diablo is some kind of ultimate demon version of the goliath from starcraft?

YUCK!
