You know you're obsessed with Diablo when you come up with something like this lol.
Jeru kindly provided me with all the vocal files for Tyrael (found in the 'favourite boss voice' thread). Listening to these, I noticed that one of them is 'Godspeed'. Thats right, Tyrael says 'Godspeed'. God-speed? Since when is there a 'God' in Diablo? The phrase clearly originates from a culture that believes in God.
"In the modern world, speed has come to simply mean a rate of movement (e.g. high speed, miles per hour, meters per second etc.), but the English (derived from the Anglo-Saxon) origin of the word meant not velocity, but to thrive, or to prosper. The term God speed, used by some translations of the Holy Scriptures, is a contraction of the saying, "I wish that God may speed you," or in today's terminology, "I wish that God may bless you with success." Both specific uses of "God speed" found in the King James Version have nothing to do with physical motion."
I guess this is just at the fault of the creators of Diablo lol, which is why I said the first line in this post.
*sigh*... come on Diablo III, we've analysed DI and DII too much!
Also, I realise that the thread's title isn't correct. This 'God' is not in sanctuary, it is in Sanctuary's universe aka the Diablo universe, but it was just easier to say what I did.
How come when you put your cursor over the thread to see the first few sentences or whetever its says "diablo fenatic kindly provided me with all the vocal files for Tyrael" But here it says "Jeru kindly provided me with all the vocal files for Tyrael"
Edit: Well nevermind now both say Jeru.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I hope they don't bring God into the Diablo series, nothing against God, I am Protestant myself, but I liked the seemingly useless Council or Angels in charge. Their wasn't one demon in chage of Hell, seemed only fair Heaven mirriored (to a certain extent) this.
Heavenspeed is a little long winded, and while more correct, sounds a little weird. Godspeed is quickier, and anyone who has played enough medieval fantasy epics knows they had better hurry up and do whatever it is they are suppose to be doing.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Actually we could see God existing in that universe, as in a less acting supreme being who's only watching his creations interacting with each other, up to a point where they are on the blink of calamity (as in a position to threat his existance), and decides to take direct control over the situation. Some angels like Tyrael protest and forge a momentary alliance with the demons and all together struggle to survive against this powerful enemy.
There you go: the WC3 + WoW storyline transposed to the Diablo universe...

Let us keep Warcraft out of the Diablo series as much as possible, aye.
Sanctuary is a blue state. God has no place here.

qft that is a really good point
I do so wish people made larger more meaningful posts.
To which point were you referring. Technically I made three points.

well what else do i have to add, i agree with all that you said... and i have nothing else to add. and so by me saying what i did, it shows others that another has the same opinion as you. no point in me writing basically exactly what you did with a few words changed
no point in me writing basically exactly what you did with a few words changed
Personally, I'd of preferred you did.
But you could have just as easily said that as Diablo does not truly follow Judeo-Christianity, the lack of a a single god-like entity in charge of heaven suits the game quite well. The main, or one of the main overtones in the game is Angels versus demons, while this does feature in religion, it's not the soul focus. Admittion to Heaven of Hell is. Many of the characters refer to the Angelic Council, and while it is possible they are wrong as it is not like they would truly know who is in charge. But some have had dealings with members of the council directly, namely the Horadrim.
It is not officially stated, but you can assume that through Tyrael's dealings with the Horadrim, specifically the given of the soulstones to them, that he might have mentioned that he went against the councils wishes.
If I was in Tyrael's shoes, I would no doubt make mention of the fact that while I want to help you (Humanity) the others in essence would rather let you die.

Well, it is said that there is a world above Heaven and Hell (where the Dreamers come from), which means that one or more beings seem to have created Heaven and Hell, so 'God' could refer to them. Or yea, there may be a more powerful being in heaven that they refer to as 'God'. If so, then its likely that he would have come from the Dreamer's world too.
It does fit, it just depends whether we want it to fit or not.
Depends on the definition of the word God
From a Judeo-Christian perspective it would be
1 - Omnipotent and Omniscient being that rules over the area in question (Sanctuary, thus, a "God of Sanctuary")
2 - An Intelligent being who created that area of existence and life within it from nothing
3 - Both (Like Jehova)
But then youve got points like
1- Sanctuary and the Universe of Diablo is not all Judeo-Christain (like Elfen said)
2- Other Religions dont share the same concept of what God is, and most have more than one. Most Religions are not Monotheistic
3- If you're worshiped like a God then does that make you a God? Would the Prime Evils be Gods in context to the Triune? From mans perspective
4- Can it really be classified as a God if its only Omnipotent and Omniscient over a smaller region than that of all existence? Only Sanctuary and not everything
Like a... God of France? or God of Earth?
So errrrm.... Im going to have to say - No. Leave the God idea out of Sanctuary and the Diablo Universe
Oh right, forgot to mention Inarius. He would be the closest thing to a God of Sanctuary by any standards at the peak of his power. Still doesn't make him a God though
Edit- Lets say, Inarius had a "God-Complex"
where the Dreamers come from
Yep, theres Dreamers and Trag'Oul and his "other dimensional friends". Makes things a whole lot more complex (Hurry up Blizzard!)
It only says the word God twice in Birthright, one being totally unimportant and the other being
The power surged through him like a roaring river, feeding him continuously. He felt his body swell. He was a giant in comparison to his foes, a titan.
A god, even…
And it says the word "Goddess" a few times when referring to Serenthia in Scales of the Serpent
I don't have the Veiled Prophet in E-Book form though
Let us keep Warcraft out of the Diablo series as much as possible, aye.
Sorry man, my intention on that last sentence was to note that by adding a supreme being in the Diablo universe, you could be actually setting the storyline to follow that of Warcraft 3 and WoW, as my post suggested.

Exactly what I had in mind now. Well I just hope to get more on the Dreamers and the other less known existances from the books in D3, I fell helpless when they are mentioned because, erm, we know so little about them...
Edit: I will not get into the Tyrael question exactly because I believe sooner or later some of the Angels will also engage to have humanity as supporters of their cause against Hell.
Anyway, I think Atrumentis point is suitable with the Diablo universe because it would be an obvious choice not to follow the integrity of Judeo-Christian beliefs. And what you said is very sensible: Inarius was a God to some people. It's true he called himself the Prophet, but it is said that his Cathedral pursued to follow his intentions and desires, not to mention that he indeed created the Sanctuary (using powers and tools which were not his originally... I'll find the exact phrase and quote it asap).
But in my opinion, God would not be on either side, unless he was somewhat weakened, because it seems that the Angiris Council is a match to the Prime Evils, thus if God was on the side of the Light, how come this balance was possible? He should be stronger than both initially, but then why isn't he acting on the conflict?
Finally, you could also play with some facts from the Veiled Prophet (so if you didn't read it, STOP HERE).
Udilssian became one with Sanctuary: in some religions (including certain interpretations of Christianity) the main objective is to become one with God/Nature/Universe so we could take that God in Diablo is the Existance, thus the Balance... It wasn't too explained in the books but from what I understood it holds the key to the conservation of the Universe and it's somehow there since the beginning. Add the fact God may not be on either side and so it is only leading his creation through the path they create, you have the Balance. Let one side prevail and the end occours, let both strive and the universe will carry on as it is...
Sorry man, my intention on that last sentence was to note that by adding a supreme being in the Diablo universe, you could be actually setting the storyline to follow that of Warcraft 3 and WoW, as my post suggested.
Arthas is not the most powerful being in the Warcraft universe. nor was the old Lich King Ner'Zhul. Sargeras the Demon Lord is.
Arthas is powerful I'll give him that, but Sargeras is vastly superior.
Though at least we aren't discussing whether their should be someone stronger than the Prime Evils. I hate that. They are the Prime Evils. Prime. Derived from the latin Primus, meaning First.
Heaven is larger unknown. so yes it is possible their is a "God". If it doesn't say their isn't one, then doesn't that mean there is a possibility there is one. If I write a medieval fantasy story with elves dwarves orcs and goblins in it, but I never, up to the the end of what I had written mentioned dragons, is it possible they exist in the world I made, but the characters just haven't met one yet. I never said they didn't exist. But I am kinda starting to drift off point.
Personally, let's leave God out of it.

In some but not all. I think the version of Christianity which Diablo primarily borrows from is the more pop cultural, stereotypical one. There is Heaven and Hell, and armies on either side, the most notable members of which, are the Seraphim (Angels) and the Nephilim (Demons). And me (and my soul) in the middle. Both sides would welcome the addition of my soul, but the demons more actively tempt me to join them and luring me away from God, by offering me that which I desire most. Usually something in some way associated with the seven sins, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride, Eny, Sloth and Wrath. And by accepting, I damn my soul to a often ironic punishment for all eternity. One who wishes for vast amounts of gold is according to Dante's Inferno is said to be placed under a board and sacks of gold placed on top until their body is crushed.

Maybe the god he is speaking of is sanctuary itself, or maybe god is the origin of mana. Maybe he's like a third party, an overseer if you will. He favors neither heaven or hell, he is the god of mankind. I mean isn't the origin of man unknown in the the diablo universe? God could be equivalent of the council and the prime evils, only his rule is over man instead of demons or angels.
I think the story of this game should be with the "angels" turning on their "god", and cause hell on Sanctuary, and The High Heavens. This way the Demons would have not one but THREE worlds to Controll. Hence the name DIABLO 3!!!!! Then the hero, aided by allies, most likely the rogues, will have to travel across the realms Destroying the Demons, and presence of evil in the realms. I believe Tyrael will be the main traitor to "god", and will lead the demons on a full scale attack on Sanctuary, and the High Heavens. In the end Tyrael will be wounded by the hero, and will be trapped into a Horadric Soulstone, where he will be sealed forever. His soulstone will be sent to a pit in the Burning Hells where he will be trapped for all eternity.

Nah we do know the origin of man. We come from angels and demons, and Trag'Oul already seems to be the equivalent of 'God' for Sanctuary.
Maybe Tyrael is just saying it as an expression lol. Like, he didn't mean it literally, he was just speaking human-speak trying to encourage us, and humans recognise 'Godspeed' as a blessing.
Has anyone else seen the parallels of starcraft and diablo? Zerg Manipulate Terrans to destroy the Protoss, Hell manipulates man to destroy Heaven. We haven't even seen Belial or Azmodan, what if one of them is the Overmind? We cant see the angels faces, could they be Protoss? Is there any extensive back story to the Starcraft universe? If there are men in sanctuary, what would stop them from creating technology? Possibly to escape a world that is falling apart because a certain destruction of a certain stone... I'm just saying it may be possible that The Diablo universe may be linked to the Starcraft universe by time and space. Ehh, thats all probably bullshit. I shouldn't get so high^-^
