Hmm... sorry if I should know this, and correct me if I'm wrong, but are Azmodan and Belial still fighting that Civil War in Hell? I never really understood that whole story, as I was a younger when I played D1.
Anyway, perhaps they would try to conjure one, or all, of the Prime Evils to help on their side, foolishly thinking they could contain their power only to get dominated by them.
uh no Azmodan and Belial both have strong armies but neither one can seem to decimate the other. no they kinda both rule hell. it was these two who banished the prime evils, so i dont think they would be the ones to summon them back. the prime evils did destroy 1/3 of the entire armies of hell

Maybe hell wants to win the war so badly that they will forgive themselves to the prime evils. Azmodan and Belial will join forces with the prime evils to conquer the mortal plain since the worldstone has been destroyed.
Maybe you also see a ritual to revive duriel, andariel, lilith and the others to deliver a final blow to the mortals. The heaven's would see this act of evil and many angels would join the fight with man. That is when evil has a chance to kill a few angels and turn the tides of the war. Especially when all the chaos of the war to man, many will wind up in hell where they will reinforce hell's army. (Getting a little carried away...)

The Worldstone Chamber is destroyed, and Tyreal tells you to run through the portal (end of LoD)
When d3 begins, It icks up with a cinematic of Tyreal in the worldstone chamber with Deckard cain trying to force the souls back, but they are overcome, and when the demons force toward them the scenes switch to a scene in Heaven, where you see God, and he's talking with a council of a certain number of angels, top official angels, and they speak of how the worldstone has been destroyed, and the boundaries between heaven, hell and earth are also now in ruin...and they speak of getting Tyrael to lead angel into Hell to secure it, and then through the hall door somone comes in and syas that tyreal is gone and soul of evil have come from the shattered remains of the worldstone, souls of hell...someone give youre character the quest to find Tyreal and rescue him. After rescueing tyreal from assorted lesser demons...first act leveled demons, he tells you of how your d2 character killed baal and the wordlstone was destroyed...and how deckard cain was overcome by demons and taken away somewhere below the depths of the earth. you eventually later on, after doing some quests and whatnot, find that Cain, the last of...oh i forget the mage clans name, was forced to summon and embody an evil deity ( a new one which was introduced) and that he is in Hell searching for the souls of Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto...there will be some storyline like that where a good character is taken to emobdoy or summon dibalo or baal...it wont be mephisto unless iyou figure it this way- theres been a game with diablo only, theres been diablo 2, pklus baals the add on in LoD, so mephisto or someone else has there moment...

Um his soul stone was never destroyed so u know maybe he will just posses another hero like ur old one because u killed him like before.
why must every 11 minutes of my life be filled with misery and woe, why must i write essays to explain things people should already know
the only stone never to have been seen being destroyed is baal's so would all you idiots who say diablo's stone was never destroyed please shut the fuk up. and please for the love of god get it through your heads, the prime evils do not need soulstones to exist. especially now seeing as they have been destroyed. mephisto's and diablo's are destroyed in the same movie. you see a crimson stone get smashed followed by an azure stone being smashed, you dont see baal's stone being destroyed, but since diablo's and mephisto's stones had to be destroyed, the same must be said about Baal's.
prehaps baal's stone was never shown being smashed, as someone putting a soulstone in the forehead is very over used and Blizzard wouldnt use that concept again. especially since the prime evils dont actually need them.
they ruled over the burning hells for years(note no soulstone), the lesser evils rebelled against them (note no soulstone), they were banished to the mortal realm from Hell (note no soulstone), they ran rampant in the world of sanctuary (note no soulstone), mephisto is captured and his essence placed in a soulstone and buried beneath a temple in kurast, Baal is catured in the desert, but due to his destructive nature, breaks the soulstone the Horadrim try to trap his essence in, tal rasha sacrifices himself to replace the lost part,(which has no magic energy), diablo is captured and his essence trapped in a soulstone and buried beneath the cathedral at tristram.
the soulstones only came into play when they were captured in the mortal realm.
Mephisto and Diablo, escape their inprisonment in similar ways, they haunt the dreams of someone, (i think mephisto did this) Diablo haunts the dreams of Lazarus, while mephisto haunts the dreams of a council member. the first choice for someone to be the embodiment of Diablo is King Leoric, but he is old, and it does not work, so they move on to the next person the Prince Albrecht. a similar situation occurs in the jungles of kurast, a council member is chosen to be the embodiment of Mephisto. They soulstones are placed in the body of the chosen person and the prime evil slowly takes over.
when killed, then essence from the stone, returns to the stone, this is seen in the end movie of diablo 1, diablo reverts back to the prince, then the prince dies shortly after. The warrior picks up the soulstone places it in his head and the process is repeated.
Baal is inprisoned withing a partial stone and the mage tal rasha, who after years of torment finally becomes the embodiment of Baal.
once released all three prime evils meet in the Durance of Hate, the location of Mephistos inprisonment (durance means prison), Diablo in the form of the warrior, assumes his true form, it is unclear if mephisto is in his true form, nor Baal for that matter, but what is important to note, is the fact that Baal is there, he is still pretty much in the form of tal rasha, but he has through his long peroid of attachment to Baal, gained some of his powers, and there is something else, oh thats right no soulstone!!! marius has Baals soulstone. he doesnt have his soulstone and the other two prime evils are either oblivious or dont care.
Baal does not get his soulstone back till almost the end of the last movie, then he burns down the asylum.then LOD begins, in this same movie we see a large hand (possible the barbs) smash first a crimson soulstone (diablo's) then a azure soulstone (mephisto's). the only stone not destroyed here is Baals, but that is because he has not been killed yet.
now things get alittle weird, now with diablo and mephisto becasue their stones were whole, they were simply placed in a host body's forehead, and the slowly took over the body. now with Baal is a little different, Tal Rasha was used to replace part of the soulstone. Baals soulstone is never placed in the body of tal rasha again since marius removes it. in LOD he holds in around his neck on a chain of some sort.
Baal is finally defeated, and the worldstone which has been corrupt is destroyed. while corrupt, it allowed a multitude of demons to pour through into the mortal realm, the exact effect not having a worldstone will have on the world is unkown at this point, a sequel to d2/LOD will most likely have something to do with this. and the fatc that the prime evils are trapped in the abyss, as this is where smashing their soulstones forces the essence to go.now as any one who has seen or read the share of fantasy movies/tv shows/games will now no one ever stays in an abyss for long take the zelda series for example, in Ocarine Of Time (OOT) you trap ganondorf (ganon) in the abyss, yet he returns in Wind walker (WW). the most common way for some one to return from an abyss is a summoning spell and or ritual. this more often than not caused the person or persons to undergo some sort of change, as they are never in the same form when the return as when they went in. usually the return more beefy and cooler looking.
depending on how long it takes him to come back the wound could heal? if not it will remain like this
Azmodan and Belial both have strong armies but neither one can seem to decimate the other. no they kinda both rule hell. it was these two who banished the prime evils, so i dont think they would be the ones to summon them back. the prime evils did destroy 1/3 of the entire armies of hell

What Elfen Lied says is absolutely correct. Now for the last paragraph, this is a hypothesis of Elfen Lied to remind every one. I strongly believe that Azmodan and Belial will resummon the prime evils back from the abyss. May reason is this. This is the sin wars where heaven and hell combat each other. Neither of them can tip the war in their favor and that is where it is all up to man. I believe that Belial and Azmodan will want to defeat heaven and the only way to do this is to infect man again. To infect man, you need terror, hatred and destruction on the mortal plain.
However, this too is also a hypothesis and Elfen Lied has more knowledge then myself. So, the only way of knowing what the story line for D3, is the day when it comes out.

I also share your belief, but for different reasons.
1. The game's name is Diablo. He's been the focus for two games. It would feel strange without him in it.
2. How can you compare Lesser Evils to Greater Evils. Wouldn't it be logical to assume that they would be far easier to defeat, and that Heaven would be at a giant advantage if the Three weren't present?

You have a point. But maybe Azmodan and Belial were considered to be the lesser evils of hell at the time when Diablo, Baal and Memphisto roamed in Hell. That was a long time ago and maybe the lesser evils have gotten more powerful since the greater evils were imprisioned in there soul stones for a long time.
Like I said though, the only way of knowing is when D3 comes out.

Well, neither Andariel or Duriel seemed to have gotten any stronger, though there really was no reference to compare with, so I don't see that happening. But maybe it will.

couldn't there be sort of a chain reaction like a follower of diablo ressurecting him but partially failing to do so and diablo comes back as about half of what he used to be and has to search for somthing like the blood of his slayer and have to baisically regenerate himself to fight and kill you for the blood that would save his life.

Diablo's follower, Maurice was killed by baal. Diablo also regenerates his power from "terrorizing" others around him, feeding off their fear. He then gains enough power to inhibit their hosts body or possess them.

Yeah, a unison of all evils will most likely happen. Or if not then the opposition will be killed by Diablo & Co
