The high prices on the hardcore AH is really a deterrence to new players. I'm a casual player and I can barely make the gold needed to even get starter items for inferno act 1. I had to use flip tactics to make the gold required to buy the items for inferno. Guys please lets not be too greedy. Help your fellow players by lowering the prices is a good start to promoting more participants.
I love the emotion you get when you die in hardcore. That's what draws me to it. I also like the one life challenge.
Dont forget that it works both ways around. You can also make more gold.
I usually make 1-2 millions just from selling the leveling gear I find. Per char. And that's enugh to buy gear to complete infenro with if you know what you are doing.
I can sell really low level items for a nice price on AH I really like the economy it's rather nice. Even low level legendary's I've had sold for a descent price.

The really "good" hardcore items are more expensive than the softcore one, for one simple reason: In softcore, good gear means only eficiency, lazines, flexing, ego wanking... but in hardcore, it means survival.
And people know that. Zunimassa boots which would cost 5 mil in SC will cost 100 mil in hardcore. Why? Becouse you gotta pay extra to stay alive and saving money on such things means you lose all, not just few seconds efficiency.
Softcore player thinks this way "ok ill buy 50 milion in rmah, buy this upgrade for 50 million which will boost my dps by 3000, but ill lose some ehp, oh well who cares, then i can do my mp 10 run in 59 minutes instead of 60 and after it pays for itself ill sell it and buy better"
Hardcore player thinks like this "ok i have been farming for 1 month to have eneugh money for 1 upgrade, what would boost my survival most and yet not hampering my dps? *player thinks for 1 day* Ok lets put my old piece of gear on my secondary bacl-up character, then try if i can handle higher mp, should propably start in some lower areas and invite my already geared friend to cower my ass, must not forget to put everything into chest in case i die to d/c"
See what i mean? Also, there are very few bots on hc, making everything player-found and thus more rarer and more valuable. What would you value more in real life? Something made by thousands in factory or hand-made/growed by people who actualy care about it?

@rencol, thanks for the information. Your explanation makes sense but it doesn't really helps to promote more players to play HC. More players participation would results in more drops equal increased chance for more great items. It's a win win for all players when there are more players getting drops. Hence it would lower the price for items if there are more great items available.

Ok how about this - your chance to sell anything bellow lvl 60 on softcore - basicaly under 1% chance. On hardcore however, leveling items are highly desired and finding lvl 8 rare chest from skeleton king adding a lot of vita + something else basicaly means 100k+ in AH. And believe me, it sells a lot. If you happen to find legendary 1H axe lvl 9 Ganzeniku with socket, it sells for over 20 milion. if it has socket and vitality, its over 30 milion. You can even buy good blue items from vendors by bundle (20x start new game till lvl 23 bracer with high vita high int/dex/str appear, buy 20 of them 4k each, sell 70k each on Ah very fast. Got it? You can actualy earn all money you need for lvl 60 just playing HC.

That's no different than SC. Prices on HC are just 1000 times higher, both for selling and buying.
Yes, you can make a few 100k from selling leveling items. But once you hit lvl 60 you realise that even the most common set and legendary items ( like IK boots for example ) cost 20 million...

Yep, then dont start with top set and buy normal rare... thats what Hc is all about - slow progressing and enjoying the game where you still have something to look forward.

AH on Hc makes sense but on SC it is totally screwed up. If you have moderate luck and you are efficient at farming, you will quickly earn all the money you need to faceroll mp1 quickly. Personnally, i made my way up to lvl60 with all caracters. Once there, i bought MF gear for my monk and after approx 12hrs farming, i found a leoric signet. I then bought good budget gear for my barb. Start farming inferno act3 and after the 1st pack of elite, i killed a trash mob which dropped me a nat's boot with 260 dex and 55 vit. Ok, i got lucky but if you are at least a decent player, you can easily achieve decent gear in less than a week after reaching inferno.
TBH, I find it a refreshing change to SC and in so much better condition that HC. Yes, prices are higher, but this means YOU can sell for more as well. The door swings both ways.
As an example, I had a great drop from my first HC character for a level 8 Rare ring that sold in a heartbeat for 850,000. No one would have bought this in SC, why bother, just get to 60 ASAP.
I then found a Rare from a little girl vender in Act 2 (can't remember where) that was a good Lvl 14 Source. I bought it for 11,000 and sold it for 450,000.
So you know... my first & only HC character is around Level 20 and I have 1.3 Mil already.
I know I'll need money for Inferno gear, so I am careful about drops and if they have a resale value. I find that unlike SC, you can't just BUY from the AH in HC, you have to PLAY the AH as well in order to use it. In other words, you have to participate.
Truth is, all the prices you see on those items are simply over inflated and not a true representation of what these items sell for. The best way to buy anything off the AH in HC is to hunt them down by constantly searching for them and not buying items that have been on the AH for more than a couple hours. I have purchased a good amount of stuff for my characters but have done so by sniping them on the AH as soon as these items were listed. ALways sort by time and keep hitting that search button. When an item you like comes up for a good price, you buy. If it does not look like it is at the right price then you move along.
Just because the top items are priced super high does not mean that is what the seller is going to get for that item.
I find that the AH is right on for Hardcore. You cannot expect it to be the same as softcore. The nutrition alone for hardcore makes items more rare. It has since Diablo 2.
However, wise shopping on the AH is always available. You just need to use the AH to scout for cheap prices with the appropriate stats or item attributes. You can always find items with high buyouts, but low bids. Sometimes you just have to start placing bids and see what you come up with.
Best thing I have found is slow leveling a easy character type to farm with. Whatever you find you are best at. Salvage blues and sell the essences/tooths on the AH to gain money to purchase levling gear.
The baseline for what's good in hardcore is a lot lower than in softcore. It also just "feels" better than softcore. Not so many people playing (hence less people using the AH) + solid item sink = so much better.
Getting some gold together on HC is really easy. Just play trough normal and sell vit/mainstat gear. Any item < lvl 25 with 10+ vit and any main stat will sell for 100k +. I leveled 9 or 10 chars, and all of tham had between 5 and 10 millions when they hit 60 just from selling leveling stuff.
But in the end, it does not matter. ON SC you gain less and items cost less, on hc you gain more but the items also cost more. The AH is just as out of order in SC as in HC.
I love the emotion you get when you die in hardcore. That's what draws me to it. I also like the one life challenge.
