Apparently I have a bad graphics card, it's a nvidia geforce4 mx 4000. Idk what they do, im pretty much a big newb. I was just wondering, is a graphics driver different than a graphics card? And what's the difference?
Im confused because, I looked on google and found that to find what your graphics card is, you go to your device manager and open your display adapters, which is a geforce4 mx 4000, and then I asked about finding out my graphics driver and got the same answer.
- A graphics card is the physical piece of hardware inside your computer that deals with visual processing, freeing up the processor to think about other things. This will improve the overall game performance allowing you to have better frame-rates/visual quality when playing your game.
- A graphics driver is the software that is installed on your computer hard drive that tells the graphics card how to work and how to communicate effectively with the rest of the computer. Drivers also often come with a "graphics control panel" software that allows you to customise the workings of the graphics card and change things like desktop gamma etc.
Strictly speaking you should keep your drivers up to date because modern games often do things in different ways to older games making it difficult for out of date drivers to cope with them (causing newer games to lag or not work at all)
In terms of updating graphics cards it can be very expensive (i.e. £300+ for a very good one) and they can get massive making it difficult to fit them inside smaller pc cases. They can also hog power meaning that you need to buy a new psu. So getting a good graphics card can have you replacing several things in your computer that you had not planned on.
On the other hand it is totally possible to update to a reasonable graphics card on a budget. My brother recently did just that (cant remember what card he bought) and all we had to do was buy a new psu and in total it was much less than £200. He can now play Star trek online, Empire total war and TES IV Oblivion with pretty much no lag.
Hope this helps
