Well, I think it was around before Boomerang, I don't remember where I saw it as a kid, though. I do remember drawing a little Hong Kong Phooey comic strip and being so excited about it that I called my Mom while she was at work to explain each frame to her. I bet she loved that phone call!
I did a quick search and the most I could find was s.robat with a 58 post introduction thread. I didn't look through all the pages (there were something like 50), but I looked through quite a few.
