I began to think of myself as this dark brooding Diablo fan hiding under a rock, feeling rejected, disenfranchised, and hopeless at the prospect of a future Diablo release.
Bah, what are you talking about? There is plenty of other Diablo fans out there, for sure. It's not like you are alone to be a "dark brooding fan hiding under a rock". It's not like you come to a forum, mention your game and no one knows what it is. I've been waiting for 10 years too, you know, absolutely hopeless...
Hey! I can be as dark and brooding as I want in spite of how many tons of Diablo fans ther are out there. And maybe I feel loneliest among greater numbers of people. How dare you tell you me how not to feel. My psychiatrist will hear of this!
Sure. Except when I see no people to talk to about my favorite game, I get jealous of this forum, and people say they are getting detested, while they actually have a big chance of getting their game (I don't)... dunno.
Ah, really? I remember Heretic especially. I played the one with the Doom-like graphics. I don't recall if they made anything beyond that.
Well, in that case, I understand. It's not like there's an entire forum devoted to Lands of Lore which is one of my all time favorites. So I reiterate my right to brood under a rock anyway.
Well, actually, there were, sort of "4" of them. Heretic and its exp was the first, and it's, obviously, a DooM clone, but it had very different gameplay. I never liked DooM because it's all dark and murky, and Heretic is green and red and yellow, all those bright colors. I can always load that game up and just get a quick run without any purpose... Heretic is always installed on my PC, sooner or later, despite the fact that I know every level by heart, I still feel like loading it up for the 200'th time...
Then it was heXen, heXen II, Heretic II. Most fans of my type just center on one particular game. They are all pretty different. Heretic II has nothing to do with Heretic I, lol, it's a TPS! But I happened to love them all at once, except for totally different reasons. The fantasy slide, the non-Quake casual combat, puzzles, RPG style, and the storyline (which is so crooked you have to dream up most of it on your own) were all they ever had in common... loading heXen II after heXen I feels weird.
The other game that can be strongly associated with all these games is Black Crypt. The first game Raven Software ever created. It has the same classes, setting, symbols, whatever, has a lot in common, so I'm sure they kept that game in mind while making the series, heXen especially...
Lands of Lore, heard of that game a few times, actually... *checks Wikipedia* Wow, Westwood. Where I have been? I love Nox, I should check that game out, too...
P.S.: and my avy is from heXen beyond Heretic (official long name of heXen, in case you don't know)...
WoW and Diablo. those are my loves right now. there are other games that i love, that fall in their own categories, i got a game for almost every category. but diablo and WoW are my primaries.
I like them okay. I just don't think they need be synonymous with fantasy RPGs.
They are rather snooty at times, though. Kind of like the Vulcans, but not in that endearing logical kind of way. And the male elves often appear a little too feminine to be taken seriously. And I wouldn't want that in my uber-masculine gritty world of Sanctuary.
