JK, Anyone remember Mythos? Well their new company Runic is making an action adventure diablo style MMO. But I thought it's funny because ppl think diablo 3 looks cartoony but look at this

Consider this fact, until I started reading the posts on this thread I thought someone took a Diablo 3 screenshot and added in cartoony character models. What does that tell you about Diablo 3's current atmosphere design?

It says your attention to detail is lacking, lol
Come on man, look at the comparison screenshot posted above. They have a similar dungeon theme, but the quality of the visuals are noticeably different.
Oh and the composer for Diablo 2 music Matt Uleman is working on that new game too, it's called Torchlight
that's the reason i will probably try torchlight down the line despite the crappy cartoon feel to it

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
Well, he set out to find 2 largely different screenshots. I was thinking it was taken in that overly-green dungeon from the first D3 video. Diablo 3 has more detailed textures, but that's about the only difference. You can't tell me these don't look similar...
Shoot, I must admit there is a certain similarity but more in colour and shades than in caricature. My first impression was that the graphics in Diablo looked a little bit like a water colour painting, maybe there is just too many colours, I dunno. I guess the grotesque and gothic atmosphere in Diablo would be better felt if the colours werent so rainbowee.
But I dont really think it looks cartoonish.
Nonono, Diablo 3 isn't cartoonish. I was only implying that the environments of the 2 games look strikingly similar, enough so that I thought the first picture was from a Diablo 3 environment (at first glance).
You have to admit... similar floors, similar busted-up railing, similar candles, similar colors, similar cracked staircases with slanted edges... all the similarities are astounding. Granted this cartoony game could have been greatly influenced by D3, but like I said, the atmospheres of the 2 games should be way different, and they aren't.
im sorry, flagship studios or wutever they are calling themselves these days need to just stop trying.
hellgate london = flop and rly dissapointing (was a very cool concept however)
mythos = awful attempt at d2 recreation mmo style
and now torchlight?? they should be crawling back to blizz on their hands and knees if they ever want a future in video game development. u cant compete with a company that pulls revenues over $250,000,000 per year off of 1 game!
The Mythos screen shots mostly look like they were inspired by the WoW:TBC Karazan raid. I can see similarities between the two In arcitecture, but as far as artistic direction goes the difference is quite large.
In fact, I think that before seeing these shots side by side I felt that D3 had too much of a Cartoon look to it, though looking at it now it actually is quite good. My guess is it looked off at first mainly because of the changes going to 3d. Better still is that many games get better looking closer to release as they put in finalized textures, which is the main contributer to that cartoon look.
Still there is more they could do for diablo to add to the game atmosphere. Some of the outdoors areas are so bright and colorful not even adjusting my gamma/brightness will help.

It's true, they are similar in the regard. The theme is almost copy and pasted lol.

Mythos was developed by the same people who made Hellgate:London (Epic Failure); who mostly comprise of ex Blizzard North People.
Now You're complaints are the same stupid complaints over at the battle.net forums about how the whole game looks too colourful and should have fluffy bunny rabbits running around.
1. You base your assumptions on the entire game on: A) a couple screenshots, a 20 minute demo movie show casing 1 outside zone and a dungeon.
2. Have you played through the entire game and can form an opinion on the whole? or are you basing your opinion on the entire game based only on what you've seen? If its the forme lend me your time machine so I can play the game too.
3. Although in your opinion the game is too colourful (whatever) to me its look great.
4. The game isn't finished yet
mythos failed just like hellgate failed just like this will fail
its probably not as intense graphically because its an MMO and they probably designed it with the same thing the blizzard devs had in mind
i remember watching an interview explaining the graphics in WoW about how they may not be sharp but they will last a lot longer / be more accepted world wide, not to mention the ease they have in making new worlds/levels

God dammit for the last f--king time all I said was that at first glance I thought the background was a Diablo 3 screenshot. Since your post, Ivaron has admitted having the same misconception, so obviously I'm not just pissing and moaning. Stop turning this into that God-forsaken debate.
So, the first screenshots from "Torchlight" have been released. This is the team composed of veterans from "Fate" and the original "Diablo".
Looks pretty nice IMO.
