so Magic 2014, the next edition of the Duels of the Planeswalker series has been released last Thursday.
To me, playing this game is a welcome change of pace compared to gathering even more Frostburn Gauntlets
What is Magic? (please skip, if you know that)
I guess, most of you have heard about the trading card game in the 90's, when it was released. I never played that, to be fair. Got into it this April, when I purchased the 2013 version (guess which game bored me back then).
It's a card game, but very unlike Poker or other well-known games. The basic idea is that you play with your deck of cards against an opponent with his deck. Playing cards is the equivalent to summoning monsters (for future attacking/defending purposes) or casting spells. It's all set in a High Fantasy environment (same developers that created D&D).
Cards look like this:
They are from the 2013 (DotP) edition, I picked these for the flavor texts, which I simply love
Pro and Cons of this online version
-You can get the whole game for 10$ (You can pay more to unlock cards etc, that you would otherwise have to unlock via playing, no pay to win)
-You can play whenever you want to and games are pretty short(like 10 to 15 mins),
-no manual shuffling of cards,
-bad software programming (crashs etc, not too bad because it usually doesn't happen during an actual game but in the menus, still annoying of course),
-rules not perfectly executed (very minor issues, can't go into details, but I've read so and I suppose it's still better than arguing over it irl),
-also in 2013 a major con was that you couldn't build a deck from scratch, but now there is a new mode, which features just that.
For the 2014 full game, please search for "Magic 2014" in your steam client. I don't want to post a link that might be region-specific.
If you don't have a client, consider getting it, but please get it from a thrustworthy source.
You play already?
What do you think?
I've played trough the whole campaign with the Garruk deck so far and don't have much to say actually. It feels weak again, but I'm too much of a noob to make such calls
I'm annoyed that it still crashes like the last version.
I'm excited to try the new decks.
I've never possessed physical cards, but from what I've gathered, the online game is almost the same. They only missed out on the "priority" system, which I, of course, don't know. But I don't think, that has a great impact on the game. You can basically play your Instants whenever you choose to by pausing the game.
I've played the physical game for years, and still do, with two very close friends that live near me (so it's very easy to just text them and within 5 minutes we're at my house, playing). I played the 2013 online version , just to check it out. It's quite similar. I just miss my own decks, they were years in the making
I downloaded the free version on PS3 for one of the older copies of the game back when they had that PSN downage and gave a free sub to the online store. It was fun to play through but the lack of deck-building options was torturous for me since I love building decks.
I've been tempted to try some of the newer ones because I played the card game for years from Junior high all the way through college. I got into the hearthstone beta and all I keep thinking is that it's just not as good as MTG. Maybe I'll try out the 2014 version some time if I see it on sale for a good price. If I can drag myself away from the other games I'm still playing.

I keep saying that to overneathe
Also got a key this week. Haven't played much, but I don't think, the game has a chance to "beat" MtG. Blizz tends to get extremely much out of their ideas, producing high quality games, but this time, they're fighting an uphill battle.
Maybe you guys get the Magic 2014 version on steam and we set up some games?
This is one of those 10 decks, and a cool one at that. Way above Hearthstone in style, if you ask me
So out of all those cards listed in that post you get to build a deck of at least (and preferrably) 60 cards including as many land (mana) cards as you like. If you read more than the initial post, you'll see examples of user made decks.
By now, there's also an expansion for 5 USD, which has 5 new decks.
I haven't played Magic The Gathering since I was about 7. I saw the steam sale a couple of days ago and instantly bought it. I didn't have time to play it until last night. I must say. I'm completely hooked.
- If you enjoyed MTG, you would enjoy Magic 2014 as well. 8.4/10
